Book excerpt: Optical fiber sensors have attracted significant interest in their physical properties and potential applications due to their advantages of compact size, light weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and viability in harsh environments. To achieve the potential for applications, it is essential to reveal the underlying physics through both experimentation and simulation, which is an ongoing task now. In this study, microstructures in optical fiber, such as tapers and long-period grating (LPG), are investigated by simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics software, which is also compared with experiments in this study or the experimental results achieved by this group. In the experimentation of this study, the effects of different fabrication parameters on the formation of micro-taper in optical fiber and the transmission spectra of the resulting LPGs are carried out, which indicates that the average diameter of the micro-taper decreases and a blueshift in the transmission spectrum of the LPG occurs by increasing any of the three fabrication parameters such as arc current, arc duration, and tension along the fiber. The sensitivities of LPG to environmental refractive index and temperature are studied computationally, which shows the highest sensitivity of refractive index of 171.82 nm/RIU (Refractive Index Unit) and the temperature sensitivity of 10 pm/°C. Furthermore, tapered fibers in the configurations of either single or in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer are studied as biosensors for detecting the concentration of Streptavidin (SV) protein computationally and compared with the experimental results previously obtained in our research group. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental results indicating the effective refractive indices of the coating materials play a significant role in determining the sensitivity. The findings achieved from this study are helpful for designing LPG-based and tapered fiber-based optical fiber sensors and biosensors, which enable the applications of these optical sensors in various fields, such as telecommunication, chemistry, medical and environmental sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microtechnology has changed our world since the last century, when silicon microelectronics revolutionized sensor, control and communication areas, with applications extending from domotics to automotive, and from security to biomedicine. The present century, however, is also seeing an accelerating pace of innovation in glassy materials; as an example, glass-ceramics, which successfully combine the properties of an amorphous matrix with those of micro- or nano-crystals, offer a very high flexibility of design to chemists, physicists and engineers, who can conceive and implement advanced microdevices. In a very similar way, the synthesis of glassy polymers in a very wide range of chemical structures offers unprecedented potential of applications. The contemporary availability of microfabrication technologies, such as direct laser writing or 3D printing, which add to the most common processes (deposition, lithography and etching), facilitates the development of novel or advanced microdevices based on glassy materials. Biochemical and biomedical sensors, especially with the lab-on-a-chip target, are one of the most evident proofs of the success of this material platform. Other applications have also emerged in environment, food, and chemical industries. The present Special Issue of Micromachines aims at reviewing the current state-of-the-art and presenting perspectives of further development. Contributions related to the technologies, glassy materials, design and fabrication processes, characterization, and, eventually, applications are welcome.

Book excerpt: "This thesis focuses on the fabrication and analysis of miniature functional devices that can be used for different sensing and detection applications. As the first step, the surface characteristics and morphology of the micro/nano structures on substrates (fused silica and silicon) fabricated in water and in air by femtosecond laser were investigated. Based on this study, three micro devices have been designed and fabricated by femtosecond laser, and they were analyzed for optical and chemical sensing and detections. The three micro devices are: 1) an optical Fabry-Perot interferometer in optical fiber (made from fused silica) with smooth cavity surfaces. The Fabry-Perot interferometer was used to measure accurately the refractive index of solution and, hence, is capable of identifying different solutions; 2) a fused silica glass substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The optimized morphology (in nano/micron scales) on the fused silica surface with post chemical silver planting which can achieve a cross-section enhancement factor (EF) of 2.5 x 106, evaluated by 10−7 M Rhodamine 6G solutions; 3) a nanostructured silicon substrate for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering application. A simple and efficient method was developed to fabricate a substrate that was pre-coated with silver nitrite film to generate silver nanoparticles over a large-area. This study demonstrates that an EF greater than 5 x105, measured by 10−6 M Rhodamine 6G solutions can be achieved. The proposed fabrication techniques and miniature devices can be used to integrate the SERS capability into a microchip (lab-on-a-chip) for biomedical and chemical analysis"--Abstract, leaf iv

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling the mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of materials by advanced fabrication methods (Le. ; Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) has become the new paradigm in our research era. Sensors, being the most vital part of the electronic data processing and decision making machines, stand to gain the most from engineering of the properties of materials. Microfabrication technology has already contributed significantly to the batch fabrication of micro-sensors with higher over all qualities compared to their counterparts that are fabricated using other methods. Batch fabrication of micro-sensors i) results in more uniform properties of co-fabricated devices, ii) nearly eliminates the need for characterization of individual sensors, and iii) eliminates a need for laborious alignment procedures. A less obvious benefit of using microfabrication methods is the possibility of precise control over the dimensions of the sensor. This control enables engineering of some of the properties of the material which affect the sensor's operation. There are many examples of this in the literature. Optical sensors are known to have superior properties over their counterparts that use other (i. e. ; electrostatic and magnetic) means of detection. To name a few, these advantages are: i) immunity to electromagnetic interferences, ii) higher sensitivities compared to the other types of sensors, iii) simplicity of operation principles, and iv) simplicity of overall construction.
