Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "photomechanics" describes a suite of experimental techniques which use optics (photo) for studying problems in mechanics. The field has been in existence for some time, but has always lagged behind other experimental and numerical techniques. The main reason for this is that the interpretation of data, which whilst providing whole-field visualization, is not in a form readily amenable to the end-user. Digital image processing has become common within the photomechanics community. However, one approach does not fit all, and subtle variations in technique and method have been developed by different groups working on specific applications. This primer enables the user to get started with their experimental analysis quickly. It is based on the universally popular MATLAB® software, which includes dedicated and optimized functions for a variety of image processing tasks. These can readily scripted, along with the necessary mathematical expressions, for particular experimental techniques. The book provides an introduction to some of the optical techniques, and then introduces MATLAB® routines specific to the image processing in experimental mechanics. There are also case studies on particular techniques. As part of the book, a collection of M-files is provided on CD-ROM, which also contains example images and test code. This provides a starting point for the user, who can then easily add or edit statements or function for their own images.MATLAB® is a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five papers were presented at the International Symposium on Photoelasticity, Tokyo, 1986, representing fifty-five authors. Eighteen of these papers were presented by Japanese photoelasticians and seventeen by leading foreign authorities from eleven countries (Austria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, India, Switzerland, UK, USA and USSR) • This is the first symposium on photoelasticity of international scope held in Japan. The primary objectives of this symposium are to help bridge the gap between photoelastic researchers around the world, to promote mutual understanding and communications and to facilitate exchange of newly acquired knowledge in theories and techniques. In addition, it is important that these valuable results are communicated effectively to engineers who can apply them in practice in industry. The papers presented at this symposium cover all branches of photo elasticity in a broad sense, including, in addition to long estab lished photoelasticity, newly developed moire, interferometric, and holographic photoelasticity, caustics and speckle. Therefore, from an optical stress analysis pe~spective, this volume is the latest compre hensive collection of photoelastic expertises.

Unlike other books, this invaluable compendium touches on the fundamental areas in biophotonics. Contributed by world-renowned authors, it provides a basic understanding on a range of topics for individuals of different backgrounds to acquire a minimum knowledge of research and development in biophotonics. The chapters are arranged in two major categories. The first describes the fundamental aspects of photonics, such as photomechanics, biomedical imaging, lasers and laser-tissue interaction, spectroscopy and photodynamic therapy. The second details the applications of biophotonics, with special relevance to dentistry, including dental photobiomechanics, Raman spectroscopy and dental tissue optics./a

Shannon through an article published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1948, entitled A Mathematical Theory of Communication. At that time, the aim was to use communication channels more efficiently, sending a quantity of information through a given channel and measuring its capacity; the optimal transmission of messages was sought.

Book excerpt: Offers a comprehensive review of the research and development of mechanically responsive materials and their applications in soft robots Mechanically Responsive Materials for Soft Robotics offers an authoritative guide to the current state of mechanically responsive materials for the development of soft robotics. With contributions from an international panel of experts, the book examines existing mechanically responsive materials such as crystals, polymers, gels, and composites that are stimulated by light and heat. The book also explores the application of mechanical materials to soft robotics. The authors describe the many excellent mechanical crystals developed in recent years that show the ability to bend, twist, rotate, jump, self-heal, and shape memory. Mechanical polymer materials are described for evolution into artificial muscles, photomobile materials, bioinspired soft actuators, inorganic-organic hybrid materials, multi-responsive composite materials, and strain sensor materials. The application of mechanical materials to soft robots is just the beginning. This book reviews the many challenging and versatile applications, such as soft microrobots made from photoresponsive elastomers, four-dimensional printing for assembling soft robots, self-growing of soft robots like plants, and biohybrid robots using muscle tissue. This important book: -Explores recent developments in the use of soft smart materials in robotic systems -Covers the full scope of mechanically responsive materials: polymers, crystals, gels, and nanocomposites -Deals with an interdisciplinary topic of advanced smart materials research -Contains extensive descriptions of current and future applications in soft robotics Written for materials scientists, polymer chemists, photochemists, physical chemists, solid state chemists, inorganic chemists, and robotics engineers, Mechanically Responsive Materials for Soft Robotics offers a comprehensive and timely review of the most recent research on mechanically responsive materials and the manufacture of soft robotics.
