Book Synopsis The Golden Decade by : William Heick
Download or read book The Golden Decade written by William Heick and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) in San Francisco hired renowned photographer Ansel Adams to establish one of the first fine art photography departments in the United States. The caliber of teachers and guest instructors assembled there under the new directorship of Douglas McAgy was unmatched, and the school was one of the most avant-garde art schools of its time. On hand were photographers Adams and Minor White, along with Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Lisette Model, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, and Homer Page. Three former students of Adams and White - William Heick, Ira H. Latour and C. Cameron Macauley, later known as the "Three Musketeers" - began planning a book that would focus on CSFA's photography department, covering the years between 1945 and 1955, the period known as "The Golden Decade." It was a lucky coincidence when Ken Ball and his wife Victoria Whyte Ball (whose father, Don Whyte, had bequeathed them an abundance of negatives and contact prints from his student years at CSFA) joined them. Together this team has embarked on an important journey into photography's past that is embodied in this book.

Download or read book Backyard Oasis written by Daniell Cornell and published by . This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Getty Foundation's Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945-1980 regional initiative, the exhibition Backyard Oasis, mounted by Palm Springs Art Museum in 2012, examines photographs of swimming pools from 1945 to 1982 as visual analogs of the ideals and expectations associated with Southern California. These images of individual water-based environs in the arid landscape are an integral part of the region's identity, a microcosm of the hopes and disillusionments of the country's post-World War II ethos. The catalogue contains an introductory essay providing an overview of the development of the swimming pool and its attendant aesthetic and social culture. Authored by the exhibition's organizing curator and its contributing research team members, the catalogue's five chapters are: Exposed Desires: Poolside Reflections on Celebrity, Daniell Cornell, Senior Curator and Deputy Director for Art, Palm Springs Art Museum; Swimming Alone: The Backyard Pool in Cold War California, Jennifer Watts, Curator of Photographs, Huntington Library, San Marino; Designing Nature: The Pool in the Garden, Robert Stearns, Independent Curator and Project Coordinator, Palm Springs; From Beefcake to Skatecake: Subcultures and Masculinity, Tyler Stallings, Director, Sweeny Art Gallery, University of California, Riverside; Dystopia and the Swimming Pool, Dick Hebdige, Professor of Art, University of California, Santa Barbara.

Download or read book Uta Barth written by Arpad Kovacs and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This retrospective of the photographer Uta Barth traces her use of the camera to explore both how and what we see. Los Angeles–based contemporary artist Uta Barth (b. 1958) has spent her decades-long career exploring the complexities and limits of human and mechanical vision. At first, her photographs appear to be deceptively simple depictions of everyday objects—light filtering through a window, tree branches bereft of leaves, a sparsely appointed domestic interior—but these images, visually spare yet conceptually rigorous, emerge from her investigation of sight, perception, light, and time. In this richly illustrated monograph, curator Arpad Kovacs and contributors Lucy Gallun and Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe chart Barth’s career path and discuss her most significant series, revealing how she has rejected the primacy of a traditional photographic subject and instead called attention to what is on the periphery. The book includes previously unpublished bodies of work made early in her career that add much to our understanding of this important artist. Also included is Barth’s most recent work, ...from dawn to dusk, an ambitious commission marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Getty Center.
