Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation studied the photocatalytic oxidation of light alkanes using photocatalytic thin films. In the research presented, nearly complete oxidation of isobutane, n-butane and propane using ZrO2/TiO2 thin films in a single pass reactor was demonstrated. The importance of reactor design on the effectiveness of the photocatalytic reaction is discussed in terms of photocatalyst packing and adequate illumination for catalyst activation. The influence of relative humidity in the contaminant feed stream and the reactor operating temperature were evaluated to establish optimal operating conditions for the photocatalytic reactor. Further photocatalytic studies used propane as a probe compound to investigate metal-modification of photocatalytic thin films as a means to improve propane oxidation and mineralization. Six precious metals (Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru) were tested at 1 weight percent loadings in TiO2, SiO2/TiO2, and ZrO2/TiO2 thin films. The photocatalytic reactor was operated at temperatures up to 100 C with the expectation that a thermal catalytic enhancement due to the precious metals would be observed. Propane conversion data revealed that at 1% loading, the addition of metals to the thin films reduced the activity for conversion of propane, regardless of temperature. However, the reactor temperature iii significantly affected light irradiance. Reaction rates adjusted for the influence of temperature on reactor irradiance revealed the highest reaction rates occurred at 100 C, but evaluation of Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson kinetics showed that temperature significantly reduced the surface adsorption of propane. Of the 21 materials tested, an unmodified ZrO2/TiO2 thin film had the best activity for propane conversion and mineralization. Lastly, a novel method to investigate the photoinduced change in surface potential of photocatalytic thin films was investigated.

Book excerpt: Although the seminal work of Fujishima et al. dates back to 1971, TiO2 still remains the most diffused and studied semiconductor, employed in photo-oxidation processes for cleantech (i.e., polluted water and air treatment), in solar fuel production (mainly hydrogen production by water photo splitting), and in Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) processes by CO2 photoreduction. The eleven articles, among them three reviews, in this book cover recent results and research trends of various aspects of titanium dioxide photocatalysis, with the chief aim of improving the final efficiency of TiO2-based materials. Strategies include doping, metal co-catalyst deposition, and the realization of composites with plasmonic materials, other semiconductors, and graphene. Photocatalysts with high efficiency and selectivity can be also obtained by controlling the precise crystal shape (and homogeneous size) and the organization in superstructures from ultrathin films to hierarchical nanostructures. Finally, the theoretical modeling of TiO2 nanoparticles is discussed and highlighted. The range of topics addressed in this book will stimulate the reader’s interest as well as provide a valuable source of information for researchers in academia and industry.

This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, a highly efficient photocatalyst consisting of amorphous manganese oxide (AMO) has been developed. Photoassisted catalytic oxidation of isopropanol has been studied by using amorphous manganese oxide catalysts with magnesium oxide as a diluent. When AMO or AMO/MgO is illuminated with UV-visible light in the presence of isopropanol vapor and oxygen at room temperature, the primary organic oxidation product is acetone. Enhanced yields for photooxidation of isopropanol with AMO/MgO mixtures have been observed. A continuous supply of oxygen may be achieved by adsorbing molecular oxygen on AMO and AMO/MgO during simultaneous irradiation in the UV-visible range. Temperature programmed desorption and oxygen isotopic exchange results support previously proposed mechanisms of photoassisted catalytic oxidation. Oxygen is adsorbed as O$\sb2\sp-$ species on the surface of the catalyst and plays an important role in this photooxidation. The observed effect of magnesium oxide suggests that hydroxyl groups promote the catalytic activity. The contamination of indoor air by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become a serious public health problem in recent years. The purpose of this study is to investigate photocatalytic activity of TiO$\sb2$ under kinetic conditions and the application of photocatalysts for decomposition of VOCs. The photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene, toluene, and triethylamine over TiO$\sb2$ (anatase) has been investigated by using a flat plate photochemical reactor. TiO$\sb2$ was used as a thin film coated on a microscope slide. The degradation of the three compounds, trichloroethylene, toluene, and triethylamine in a continuous flow mode, approximates first-order kinetics. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics have been used to rationalize the first-order behavior in solid-gas reaction. The deactivation of the catalyst also was investigated.

Book excerpt: Photocatalyst has been established as one of the promising technique for environmental purification technology especially used for air pollutants removal. The development and innovation of semiconductor materials which has an ability to degrade the organic contaminants in air are highly desirable. In this dissertation, a promising photocatalyst of TiO2-SiO2 thin film was synthesized via a simple sol-gel method accompanied by the spin coating process. The study on the effect of insertion a second semiconductor material on the physical and chemical properties of the TiO2 thin film photocatalyst is necessary in order to find a better way for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the thin film photocatalyst. From XRD analysis, it was found that the thin film obtained was fully anatase crystal structure after calcined at 500 °C for 7 hours. The suppressive effect on the TiO2 crystal growth was observed for lower content of SiO2. Besides, the effect of using different metal alkoxide to synthesize the precursor solution is beneficial to find the desired characteristic of thin film photocatalyst. It was observed that TiO2 particles of PTP derived thin film and powder was smaller than that of TPT derived thin film and powder due to different hydrolysis rate of the metal alkoxide. FESEM picture showed that nanosized and spherical particle was obtained. With the aim of finding the main factor of the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-SiO2 thin film photocatalyst, a kinetic study using a Langmuir- Hinshelwood kinetic model is employed. Photocatalytic activity of the TF95/5 and TF90/10 thin film photocatalyst was evaluated on degrading acetaldehyde gas. TF90/10 thin film photocatalyst showed better adsorption property due to its high surface area. However, TF95/5 thin film photocatalyst showed higher degradation rate of decomposing the acetaldehyde gas molecules due to high crystallinity of the thin film photocatalyst leading to better charge separation and produce more charge carriers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photocatalytic degradation of isopropanol under UV irradiation was studied by using p-n junction of ZnO/TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by sol-gel technique. Their energy storage ability was tested with their photocatalytic activity where there was no UV illumination. That was investigated by illumination the system with UV light for 2 h and off for 2 h until 8 h. The composition and surface structure of the catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area analysis, and particle size analysis. The change in the isopropanol concentration was observed by using gas chromatography. The result showed that the degradation efficiency of the ZnO doped on TiO2 layer films was higher than the single-TiO2 thin film, about 74.0% and 48.0%, respectively. Moreover, acetone was found during the photocatalytic degradation process of isopropanol. The effects of isopropanol solution pH, ZnO loading, and ZnO calcination temperature were studied. ZnO calcined at 600oC and 15 mol% at unadjusted pH was suitable for both photocatalytic activity and energy storage. The photocatalytic degradation rates of isopropanol for the first and second illumination were about 21.0% and 20.8%, respectively. With no illumination, the highest degradation of isopropanol was about 14.8%.

Book excerpt: Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a semiconductor metal oxide, has been used in heterogeneous photocatalysis for the destruction of organic, inorganic, and biological materials. The chief objectives of my doctoral research are to generate kinetic data and to develop engineering models for photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) using TiO2 thin films for current challenges in "solid"--Solid and air-solid environmental remediation. Three topics are studied in detail: i. TiO2 Photocatalytic Oxidation for Formaldehyde Removal from Air (Air-Solid) Formaldehyde (CH2O) is a toxic air contaminant present in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings. A novel rotating honeycomb adsorbent coupled with a PCO reactor was demonstrated by F. Shiraishi and coworkers for CH2O oxidation. They showed that their cyclic adsorbent D PCO reactor could oxidize CH2O to concentrations below the WHO guideline, but they made no attempt to model the system. In this project we modeled their batch system at transient and steady states. In addition, we applied the batch model kinetic parameters to design a continuous system for typical residential home challenges. ii. TiO2 Photobleaching of Dye Layers as a Field Analysis Method ("Solid"-Solid) Technological advances in the past decade allow glass manufacturers to deposit thin, photoactive, nano-sized TiO2 layers on glass billed as "self-cleaning" surfaces. Field installation of such "self-cleaning" window glass for office buildings or residential homes will require the creation of field analysis methods to characterize the initial and continuing catalyst activity variations with time and environmental conditions. In this project we characterized the PCO properties of commercial Pilkington Activ"!glass by oxidizing deposited organic dyes (a) to show visual decolorization and recovery of the aesthetic clarity of the glass and (b) to determine the light-driven reaction kinetics on Activ"!glass. i.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an established photocatalyst utilized for the photo-oxidation of organics in wastewater. Aqueous suspensions of TiO2 require separation and re-suspension steps to be used on an industrial scale. A method of immobilizing TiO2 within the mesoporous structure of silica has been developed at the University of Alabama. The objective of this thesis was to design and evaluate a bench-scale, continuous, photocatalytic reactor utilizing these films. This was accomplished in two phases of work: (1) batch reactions and (2) continuous reactions. The batch reactor was a one-liter standard photochemical reactor from Ace Glass. The continuous photocatalytic reactor designed for this study consisted of nine 12-inch long, 6-mm ID quartz tubes aligned around the medium-pressure, ultra-violet lamp (UV) used in the batch reactor. The tubes were coated on the inside with a thin film of mesoporous silica impregnated with TiO2 and connected in series with 6-inch pieces of Masterflex tubing. Experimental conditions were as follows: 190 ppm solutions of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), UV lamp, TiO2 in either 0.05 wt% suspensions (slurry) or thin films of mesoporous silica (film); and/or 750 ppm hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In batch and continuous experiments the UV/H2O2 and the UV/TiO2 (slurry)/H2O2 systems were the most successful with respect to the oxidation of 2,4 - DCP. The loss of 2,4 - DCP in continuous UV/TiO2 (film) systems was not significantly different from continuous UV only systems. However, the continuous UV/TiO2 (film)/H2O2 system degraded more 2,4 - DCP than the systems utilizing UV light alone. The continuous reactor developed in this study showed enhanced by-product degradation using UV/TiO2 (film)/H2O2 over the UV/H2O2 system.
