Book excerpt: (Abridged and translated) Organic photochemistry may be divided into three parts: theory which is the province of the physical chemist; instrumentation which requires the skill of both physicist and engineer; and preparation which falls within the sphere of the organic chemist. At one time the same person could cover all three fields without too much difficulty, but this has now become virtually impossible because the disciplines involved have expanded in both breadth and depth; it is there fore timely to have a separate treatment of preparative organic photo chemistry. There appears to be no review of the main photochemical reactions which includes the advances made in recent years available to the organic chemist working in the preparative field. An exception is the excellent "Photochemical Reactions" by C. R. MASSON, V. BOEKELHEIDE and W. A. NoYES JR., published in 1956, which gives a brief review of the reactions which are important in preparative organic photochemistry. The present monograph on the other hand seeks to provide a detailed survey for the chemist; the author does not set out to discuss every photo chemical reaction in the field of organic chemistry but he does include in addition to those of current interest in the preparative field some which are likely to be of interest in the future and which result in single end-products of known composition. The photochemical synthesis of highly polymerized products falls outside the scope of the work.

A complete description of the formulations and methodology for manufacturing all known phosphors is given. Methods of manufacture of lamp parts are also presented, including that of tungsten wire. The original approaches used are described as well as improvements in technology. These will serve as comparative methods for present day manufacture of these components. A history of the lamp industry is presented. Several methods are given which may serve as a source for further work in the lamp industry. Some of the earliest work has been applied in the laser industry to develop new types of discharge lasers. These include nitrogen-gas lasers and the rare gas (excimer) lasers. Previous work on lamps may also be applied in the development of new types of lasers.

In the modern manufacture of sophisticated and sensitive microelectronic components and other precision parts, there has been a great deal of concern about yield losses due to micrometer- and submicrometer-sized particles. These particles can originate from a number of sources including fluids, i. e. , gases and liquids used in the manufacturing process. So the detection, characterization and control or removal of these undesirable particles is of cardinal importance and this symposium was conceived and o~ganized with this in mind. The purposes of this symposium were to bring together those actively involved in all aspects of particles in fluids, to provide a forum for discussion of the latest techniques for the detection, characterization and control of particles, and to highlight areas which needed intensified R&D efforts. The printed program contained a total of 46 papers and a variety of topics dealing with various ramifications of particles in fluids were presented.
