Book Synopsis Introduction to Phonons and Electrons by : Liang-fu Lou
Download or read book Introduction to Phonons and Electrons written by Liang-fu Lou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-08-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' This book focuses on phonons and electrons, which the student needs to learn first in solid state physics. The required quantum theory and statistical physics are derived from scratch. Systematic in structure and tutorial in style, the treatment is filled with detailed mathematical steps and physical interpretations. This approach ensures a self-sufficient content for easier teaching and learning. The objective is to introduce the concepts of phonons and electrons in a more rigorous and yet clearer way, so that the student does not need to relearn them in more advanced courses. Examples are the transition from lattice vibrations to phonons and from free electrons to energy bands. The book can be used as the beginning module of a one-year introductory course on solid state physics, and the instructor will have a chance to choose additional topics. Alternatively, it can be taught as a stand-alone text for building the most-needed foundation in just one semester. Contents:Crystal StructureReciprocal Lattice and X-Ray DiffractionLattice Vibrations and PhononsThermal Properties of InsulatorsFree Electron Fermi GasElectron Energy Bands Readership: Undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science and electronic devices. Keywords:Crystal Symmetries;Lattice Vibrations;Phonons;Free Electrons;X-Ray DiffractionReviews:“The book is focused, rigorous, and self sufficient. It is filled with meticulous details. I am pleased to see that many questions the students may have when learning these subjects are answered in this book … I strongly recommend it to both the teacher and students.”J J Chang Professor of Physics Wayne State University “The presentation is done well and the author has an easy-to-read style that is almost chatty … Overall, I think that the author has succeeded in providing a book for a niche where the beginning student of solid-state physics wants a self-contained book without having to go to another textbook.”MRS Bulletin '
Book Synopsis Nonequilibrium Superconductivity, Phonons, and Kapitza Boundaries by : Kenneth E. Gray
Download or read book Nonequilibrium Superconductivity, Phonons, and Kapitza Boundaries written by Kenneth E. Gray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of phonons has long been recognized by research ers in nonequilibrium superconductivity. Similarly, experimentalists studying phonons at low temperatures have relied heavily on supercon ductors as sources and detectors. To a large extent this symbiotic relationship has developed with a general mutual awareness; however, to our knowledge these subjects have never been treated together in conferences or study institutes. It was with the hope of further contributing to the awareness and communication between workers in these areas that this NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) has been conceived. A second, but equally important, reason for holding this ASI is to fill a void by providing the first general textbook in this important area of physics. Therefore, there was an emphasis on the tutorial nature of the lectures and written contributions to this textbook. It should not go unnoticed that the experimental and theoretical concepts covered in this textbook are of paramount importance to the various applications of superconductors. Almost by definition, the use of a superconductor implies a nonequilibrium state! For example, phonon conduction to the helium bath is important in devices ranging from microscopic Josephson junctions to large scale magnets and transmission lines. Knowledge of the more fundamental nonequilibrium effects can aid in our understanding of devices as well as provide the potential for entirely new applications.

Book Synopsis Phonon Physics The Cutting Edge by :
Download or read book Phonon Physics The Cutting Edge written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-13 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two volumes in this series published twenty years ago contained chapters devoted to anharmonic properties of solids, ab initio calculations of phonons in metals and insulators, and surface phonons. In the intervening years each of these important areas of lattice dynamics has undergone significant developments. This volume is therefore concerned with reviewing the current status of these areas. Chapter one deals with the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo method as a numerical simulation approach and looks at how this has been applied successfully to the determination of low temperature thermodynamic properties of anharmonic crystals and to certain dynamical properties as well. Chapter two is concerned with the calculation of static and dynamic properties of anharmonic crystals in the quantum regime. Chapter three discusses intrinsic anharmonic localized modes that have been intensively studied recently. Two topics, ab initio calculations of phonons in metals, and surface phonons are dealt with in the next chapter. The remaining two chapters are devoted to topics that have not been treated in previous volumes. One is phonon transport and the second is phonons in disordered crystals. The work described in the six chapters of this volume testifies to the continuing vitality of the field of dynamical properties of solids nearly a century after its founding.
Book Synopsis Phonon Scattering in Condensed Matter VII by : Michael Meissner
Download or read book Phonon Scattering in Condensed Matter VII written by Michael Meissner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Phonon Scattering in Condensed Matter held August 3-7, 1992, at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA. The preceding conferences were held at: St. Maxime and Paris (France) 1972, Nottingham (UK) 1975, Providence (USA) 1979, Stuttgart (Germany) 1983, Urbana (USA) 1986, and Heidelberg (Germany) 1989. The Heidelberg conference was held jointly with the Third International Con ference on Phonon Physics. The next conference, to be held in August, 1995, in Sapporo, Japan, and hosted by Professor T. Nakayama and his colleagues, will also be such a joint conference. This conference was attended by 227 scientists from 27 countries, and covered all aspects of phonon scattering in condensed matter, ranging from the more traditional topics of thermal conductivity, Kapitza resistance, and ballistic phonon propagation to the recently added topics, such as electron-phonon interaction in high-T c superconductors, the use of phonons in particle detection, and phonons in confined geometries. The 207 papers arranged in 11 chapters in this volume are a cross section of the present activities in the quite obviously vibrant field of phonons and their interactions.

Book Synopsis Phonons: Theory and Experiments III by : Peter Brüesch
Download or read book Phonons: Theory and Experiments III written by Peter Brüesch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this treatment, Phonons: Theory and Experiments I, was devoted to the basic concepts of the physics of phonons and to a study of models for interatomic forces. The second volume, Phonons: Theory and Experiments II, contains a study of experimental techniques and the inter pretation of experimental results. In the present third volume we treat a number of phenomena which are directly related to phonons. The aim of this book is to bridge the gap between theory and experi ment. An attempt has been made to present the descriptive as well as the analytical aspects of the topics. Although emphasis is placed on the role of phonons in the different topics, most chapters also contain a general intro duction into the specific subject. The book is addressed to experimentalists and to theoreticians working in the vast field of dynamical properties of solids. It will also prove useful to graduate students starting research in this or related fields. The choice of the topics treated was partly determined by the author's own activity in these areas. This is particularly the case for the chapters dealing with phonons in one-dimensional metals, disordered systems, super ionic conductors and certain newer aspects of ferroelectricity and melting. I am very grateful to my colleagues J. Bernasconi, V.T. Hochli and 1.

Book Synopsis Electron-phonon Interactions in Low-dimensional Structures by : Lawrence John Challis
Download or read book Electron-phonon Interactions in Low-dimensional Structures written by Lawrence John Challis and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of electrons and holes confined to two, one and even zero dimensions has uncovered a rich variety of new physics and applications. This book describes the interaction between these confined carriers and the optic and acoustic phonons within and around the confined regions. Phonons provide the principal channel of energy transfer between the carriers and their surroundings and also the main restriction to their room temperature mobility. But they have many other roles; they provide for example an essential feature of the operation of the quantum cascade laser. Since their moment at the relevant energies are well matched to those of electrons, they can also be used to probe electronic properties such as the confinement width of 2D electron gases and the dispersion curve of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The book describes both the physics of the electron-phonon interaction in the different confined systems and the experimental and theoretical techniques that have been used in its investigation. The experimental methods include optical and transport techniques as well techniques in which phonons are used as the experimental probe. The aim of the book is to provide an up-to-date review of the physics and its significance in device performance. It is also written to be explanatory and accessible to graduate students and others new to the field.
Book Synopsis Electrons and Phonons in Layered Crystal Structures by : T.J. Wieting
Download or read book Electrons and Phonons in Layered Crystal Structures written by T.J. Wieting and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the electron and phonon energy states of inorganic layered crystals. The distinctive feature of these low-dimensional materials is their easy mechanical cleavage along planes parallel to the layers. This feature implies that the chemical binding within each layer is much stronger than the binding between layers and that some, but not necessarily all, physical properties of layered crystals have two-dimensional character. In Wyckoff's Crystal Structures, SiC and related com pounds are regarded as layered structures, because their atomic layers are alternately stacked according to the requirements of cubic and hexagonal close-packing. How ever, the uniform (tetrahedral) coordination of the atoms in these compounds excludes the kind of structural anisotropy that is fundamental to the materials dis cussed in this volume. An individual layer of a layered crystal may be composed of either a single sheet of atoms, as in graphite, or a set of up to five atomic sheets, as in Bi2 Te3' A layer may also have more complicated arrangements of the atoms, as we find for example in Sb S . But the unique feature common to all these materials is 2 3 the structural anisotropy, which directly affects their electronic and vibrational properties. The nature of the weak interlayer coupling is not very well understood, despite the frequent attribution of the coupling in the literature to van der Waals forces. Two main facts, however, have emerged from all studies.
Book Synopsis Phase Transitions in Surface Films 2 by : H. Taub
Download or read book Phase Transitions in Surface Films 2 written by H. Taub and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (AS I) entitled "Phase Transitions in Surface Films" was held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from June 19 to June 29, 1990. It reviewed the present understanding (experimental and theoretical) of phase transitions of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ftlms as well as the related structural and dynamical properties of these systems. From its inception, this ASI was envisioned as a sequel to one of the same title organized eleven years earlier by J. G. Dash and J. Ruvalds which was also held at the Ettore Majorana Centre. The previous ASI reflected the progress which had been made in understanding quasi two-dimensional (2D) states of matter, particularly adsorbed monolayers, and the phase transitions which occur in them. At that time, the field was barely ten years old. The modern field to which we are referring here can be traced to the landmark experiments of A. Thorny and X. Duval. Beginning in 1967, they published a series of papers presenting evidence from vapor pressure measurements of 2D phases of krypton and other gases adsorbed on polycrystalline (exfoliated) graphite. Their work led to a large number of thermodynamic and scattering experiments on physisorbed ftlms. This in turn motivated a great deal of theoretical interest in 2D systems and their phase transitions.

Book Synopsis Light Scattering in Semiconductor Structures and Superlattices by : D.J. Lockwood
Download or read book Light Scattering in Semiconductor Structures and Superlattices written by D.J. Lockwood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over 25 years ago the first laser-excited Raman spectrum of any crystal was obtained. In November 1964, Hobden and Russell reported the Raman spectrum of GaP and later, in June 1965, Russell published the Si spectrum. Then, in July 1965, the forerunner of a series of meetings on light scattering in solids was held in Paris. Laser Raman spectroscopy of semiconductors was at the forefront in new developments at this meeting. Similar meetings were held in 1968 (New York), 1971 (Paris) and 1975 (Campinas). Since then, and apart from the multidisciplinary biennial International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy there has been no special forum for experts in light scattering spectroscopy of semiconductors to meet and discuss latest developments. Meanwhile, technological advances in semiconductor growth have given rise to a veritable renaissance in the field of semiconductor physics. Light scattering spectroscopy has played a crucial role in the advancement of this field, providing valuable information about the electronic, vibrational and structural properties both of the host materials, and of heterogeneous composite structures. On entering a new decade, one in which technological advances in lithography promise to open even broader horirons for semiconductor physics, it seemed to us to be an ideal time to reflect on the achievements of the past decade, to be brought up to date on the current state-of-the-art, and to catch some glimpses of where the field might be headed in the 1990s.
