Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Spiritualism: Its Phenomena and Philosophy The angels of the Bible are ministering spirits, who, from their very nature and constitution, are best adapted to the work of guardianship and ministration, and the work is best adapted to their growth and development. Such guardianship is una Vailing unless the spirits can communicate with those they pro tect. T liat they can do so, he proves by the Bible, the ancients, and the fathers and leaders of the Church. Having thus fortified himself with authority, he brings forward the heavy artillery of modern phenomena, held in reserve. He would not indorse the manifestations given at public Circles, regard ing the rappings as a humbug, until forced on his attention by rappings and spirit writing in his own family. He felt the presence of spirits and conversed with them, yet he remained ln doubt of the reality of Spiritualism. His educational preju dices stood in his way, and an article he published at that time gives a doubtful sound. He believes ln sp1r1t communion, but discards the manifestations. In 1853 he continued his investigation of Spiritualism. Be lieving it to be the prince of humbugs, he endeavored to detect and expose it. Through the mediumship of a colored servant-girl in his family, he was first convinced that the phe nomena could not be explained by any law of physics or meta physics with which he was acquainted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychic Philosophy as the Foundation of a Religion of Natural Law The writer of this book was one of the very large number of persons who, alive to the beauty of ideal Christian character, was quite unable to accept current forms of Christian dogma. While thus disturbed in mind he made the error of seeking not for Truth, but for the Truth, from the Chris tian Churches, from modern leaders of thought, and even from Oriental faiths, whose foundations he endeavoured to reach, and whose inner meaning he sought to understand. His attention was invited to the psychic phenomena, that have now attracted the incredulous or bewil dered notice of so many. He expected little from these things, and began the inquiry into them with entire and pronounced scepticism. But he was at last convinced that, whatever the explanation might prove to be, he was in presence of facts which promised solution to his difficulties, because these facts bear on the main problem - whether the human soul is but a name for the sum of vital functions, or has an objective existence, embodied and disem bodied. He has attempted in this book to sum marise the psychic facts and to show the inferences which seem to him to flow from them, in the hope that they may be of use to others. A new and glorious science of man, of his origin and destiny, has been developed within the last few decades. A new philosophy has been evolved of human life here and hereafter, based upon demonstrated facts and data accessible to all. Stupendous as the science of objective nature has become, it is as the mere shadow thrown upon the canvas of time and matter by the radiant light of immortal spirit. Modern agnosticism had set up a way-mark on the road of human progression, inscribed: "No thoroughfare!" "Unknowable!" The truths most indispensable for man to know, the destiny of man and the immortality of the soul, were declared absolute mysteries. What ought to have merely been designated as unknown was declared to be unknowable. This way-mark has to be removed. It is now seen that the doctrine of the Relativity of Knowledge, as formulated by the Kantian school of modem philosophical thought, misled men into too hasty generalizations and unwarrantable conclusions. It needed only the right method to find the way out; it required only the right key to open wondrous realms to the astonished gaze. Again the supremacy of mind is restored; the saying is verified that "there is nothing on earth great but man, and in man there is nothing great but mind." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Spiritualism and the Pathology and Treatment of Mediomania: Two Lectures Materialism is both unscientific and groundless. It has no root and can have none. Like Idealism, it is a dream in which imagination usurps the' place of reason. I reject all forms of Materialism and among them Spirit ualism. Spiritualism is the heart of Materialism - it is materialism of Materialism - the worst kind of Material ism. Its ghosts are material and appeal to the five senses - theyhave shape, color, and density; they walk and talk like men and women. Never did any form of -materialism attack the soul so effectually as'spiritualism. Other forms of Materialism have left the soul out and ignored its existence, but Spiritualism is an organized efi'ort to drag it into View and exhibit its earthiness. Helvetius and Holbach denied its existence, but Robert Dale Owen and Judge Edmonds would exhibit it very much as I would exhibit a piece of 'timber or stone. Here is our ghost, they cry; come and look at it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Force, Its Mental and Moral Correlates; And on That Which Is Supposed to Underlie All Phenomena: With Speculations on Spiritualism, and Other Abnormal Conditions of Mind The doctrine of Philosophical Necessity, notwithstanding its supposed horrible tendency to sap the foundation of morals, has been elevated from the regions below, where, according to Milton, its discussion furnished fit occupation and amusement for devils only, - to form the base of Social Science. Philosophical Necessity is only another name for Law or a fixed order of Nature in the department of Mind, and there can be no Social Science without it. This I have endeavoured to make plain in my work on The Philosophy of Necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History The question of the origin of religion, and of the nature of primitive religion, was not, as a rule, seriously taken up by the early philosophy of religion, nor made the subject of any thorough investi gation; in recent times, however, it has come to the front, and has become one of the burning questions of religious science. And this is as it should be. For the nature of a mental phenomenon such as religion, is only unfolded in the totality of its development in history, and can only be understood as a whole when its origin has been traced, and its springs laid bare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of Mysterious Agents, Human and Mundane, or the Dynamic Laws and Relations of Man: Embracing the Natural Philosophy of Phenomena Styled "Spiritual Manifestations" While every other field of natural inquiry seems to be occupied with busy, patient plodders for the ore of truth, - while the pro foundest talents and the most varied learning are employed in developing the sublime laws of the heavens and the earth, - while the mysteries of light, heat, electricity, and of magnetism, of chem ical aflinity and of molecular agency, are being displayed, in their wonderful relations to this mundane sphere, - no profound learn ing, no master mind, seems to have entered this field with the same spirit of patient inquiry and unmystified intellect that, in modern times, characterize our chemists and our astronomers, in their respective fields. But we have to remember that, by the former, the mysteries of alchemy have been transformed to the precise laws of chemistry; and that, by the latter, the fearful wonders of astrology have assumed the sublim0 principles of astronomy. Numerous works have been written upon the mys. Ries of which this volume treats but, with only here and there an exception, they have regarded the phenomena as the disclosures of the invisible world as the manifestations of spirits not as the phenomena of nature, to be classified and arranged accord ing to their relations, that their real agency may be discovered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rationale of Spiritualism: A Paper Read Before the Chicago Philosophical Society The nineteenth century marks the most important epoch in the history of the world. To it will be traced the genesis of a new line of progression. The year 1848, a time of political and social revolution, marks the transition from the artificial to the natural order. It was the year that heard the awakening raps at Hydesville. It was the rap of the spirit Master Mason, laying the corner-stone for a new social structure. Spiritualism puts human nature for the first time on solid ground. It is as broad as life itself. It is all-inclusive. All truths adjust them selves to it naturally. It is a universal solvent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism: Its History, Phenomena and Doctrine Here it is necessary or desirable that I should indi cate my own position, in order that the reader may know how to discount my opinions. In debatable mat ters, we naturally want to know exactly where a writer stands, before we can decide how far to rely on what he says; for, though he may be perfectly honest, he may involuntarily be very unfair if he happens to have strong preferences.
