Book excerpt: Although trained as a philosopher, Simone Weil (1909–43) contributed to a wide range of subjects, resulting in a rich field of interdisciplinary Weil studies. Yet those coming to her work from such disciplines as sociology, history, political science, religious studies, French studies, and women’s studies are often ignorant of or baffled by her philosophical investigations. In Simone Weil: Late Philosophical Writings, Eric O. Springsted presents a unique collection of Weil’s writings, one concentrating on her explicitly philosophical thinking. The essays are drawn chiefly from the time Weil spent in Marseille in 1940-42, as well as one written from London; most have been out of print for some time; three appear for the first time; all are newly translated. Beyond making important texts available, this selection provides the context for understanding Weil's thought as a whole. This volume is important not only for those with a general interest in Weil; it also specifically presents Weil as a philosopher, chiefly one interested in questions of the nature of value, moral thought, and the relation of faith and reason. What also appears through this judicious selection is an important confirmation that on many issues respecting the nature of philosophy, Weil, Wittgenstein, and Kierkegaard shared a great deal.

Book excerpt: This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities.

Book excerpt: This book is a critical inquiry into three ideas that have been at the heart of philosophical reflection since time immemorial: freedom, God and immortality. Their inherent connection has disappeared from our thought. We barely pay attention to the latter two ideas, and the notion of freedom is used so loosely today that it has become vacuous. Axel Hutter’s book seeks to remind philosophy of its distinct task: only in understanding itself as human self-knowledge that articulates itself in these three ideas will philosophy do justice to its own concept. In developing this line of argument, Hutter finds an ally in Thomas Mann, whose novel Joseph and His Brothers has more to say about freedom, God and immortality than most contemporary philosophy does. Through his reading of Mann’s novel, Hutter explores these three ideas in a distinctive way. He brings out the intimate connection between philosophical self-knowledge and narrative form: Mann’s novel gives expression to the depth of human self-understanding and, thus, demands a genuinely philosophical interpretation. In turn, philosophical concepts are freed from abstractness by resonating with the novel’s motifs and its rich language. Narrative Ontology is both a highly original work of philosophy and a vigorous defence of humanism. It brings together philosophy and literature in a creative way, it will be of great interest to students and scholars in philosophy, literature and the humanities in general.

Book excerpt: Learn Simple, Easy Secrets of How to Get Rich This book is the sequel to Think and Grow Rich. While published 40 years after Napoleon Hill was first commissioned by Andrew Carngegie to find the Philosophy of Achievement, this book doesn't replace that bestseller. If anything, it is a study guide to explain how to more simply and quickly apply that earlier material to your life. A Lifetime of Study Condensed and Clarified His first bestseller, Law of Success, was the first precise version of the practical Philosophy of Achievement that Carnegie knew existed, but had never been assembled. Published in 1925, Hill's interviews of over 500 "movers and shakers" of his day that allowed him to distill that philosophy into a 16-lesson course and a 16-volume course that became an overnight bestseller. It was published almost exactly 20 years after that Carnegie interview. In 1937, he revised that original massive work into a single volume, Think and Grow Rich, edited to appeal to the language of that day. Its purpose was to help the nation heal after the Depression and shake off the Fear of Poverty. After eight years, Hill again revised and simplified that philosophy. He studied and revised based on reader input and his own experiences to come out with the sequel, The Master Key to Riches, in 1945. Easier Reading, Explains and Expands It seems to take Think And Grow Rich to a new level. The book is the easiest to read of all three and could be an introduction to their study. But this book doesn't replace his earlier bestsellers. It clarifies them and allows you to clear up how to apply the Philosophy of Achievement to your own life. What Hill has done is to distill and publish what has never been crammed into a single series of books, written in a popular style that keeps each of these as top sellling classics, nearly 100 years after the first was written. The 13 points have been expanded to 17. These are revised to be simpler, easier to understand and apply. Our modern emphasis on habit changing is validated with an entire chapter on this. Hill aligns this with self discipline as the needful steps to take to make rapid improvement in anyone's life. The emphasis in chapter two is to clarify what you consider "Getting Rich" is to you. You can then set your goals and achieve them more rapidly. Obviously the advice given in this book will be of absolutely no value unless applied step by step. Take the necessary steps and you will see a great change in your life. Whether or not you will become financially wealthy--who knows. One thing for certain, you'll be better off than you would have had you not taken the steps outlined. You do have to work hard at the practices in it though. We all know that nothing comes easy. Use This Book as A Study Guide to Hill's Works Practically, this should be the first of Hill's books you should read. If you've already read Think and Grow Rich, this will give you greater understanding and application if you then restudied it. Then go and pick up Law of Success and you'll be able to apply this on a graduate level. By the time you complete your studies, the world will be open to you. You'll know the principles and laws which have made people successful all through both ancient and modern history. You'll see that where people were missing a few or several of these principles, they were then setting their own ultimate failure. You will have them all, at this point. If you work out how to keep them in mind (perhaps through repetitive study) then you'll be able to maintain a constant successful course through the rest of your life. Book excerpt: Lysaker examines the relationship between philosophical thought and the act of writing to explore how this dynamic shapes the field of philosophy. Philosophy’s relation to the act of writing is John T. Lysaker’s main concern in Philosophy, Writing, and the Character of Thought. Whether in Plato, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, or Derrida, philosophy has come in many forms, and those forms—the concrete shape philosophizing takes in writing—matter. Much more than mere adornment, the style in which a given philosopher writes is often of crucial importance to the point he or she is making, part and parcel of the philosophy itself. Considering how writing influences philosophy, Lysaker explores genres like aphorism, dialogue, and essay, as well as logical-rhetorical operations like the example, irony, and quotation. At the same time, he shows us the effects of these rhetorical devices through his own literary experimentation. In dialogue with such authors as Benjamin, Cavell, Emerson, and Lukács, he aims to revitalize philosophical writing, arguing that philosophy cannot fulfill its intellectual and cultural promise if it keeps to professional articles and academic prose. Instead, philosophy must embrace writing as an essential, creative activity, and deliberately reform how it approaches its subject matter, readership, and the evolving social practices of reading and reflection.

Book excerpt: AUTHOR'S PREFACE This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. The monistic theory of the universe, the theory that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world -is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself. In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.
