Book excerpt: 'Money may be the husk of many things but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; acquaintance, but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; days of joy, but not peace or happiness' - Henrik Ibsen Money is big in the news. Banks have collapsed, the property bubble has burst and national debts are at almost unimaginable levels. The Book of Money will help you understand what is happening. Mentioning terms such as the 'financial market' and 'global economy' are daunting prospects, even without the added dreaded notion of recession. Money, and our worldwide struggles with them, is a constant source of doom and gloom news bulletins, leaving us fearing for our savings and bank balances. More often than we consider, this anxiety is down to our lack of understanding of how the economic climates and financial systems work. The Book of Money will demystify and explain economics to help you understand the modern financial world, and answers all the questions you were too afraid to ask. This beautifully illustrated book, with full colour photography, offers comprehensive diagrams to explain the most baffling of systems such as 'Who Owes What?' with national debts, an accurate portrayal of how tax is spent, and the World's top 20 banks' assets. It shares a potted history of how money came to life, charting the rise of the shekel in the Mesopotamian civilisations, the 'Lydian Lion' and profiles of notable figures who wrote about money, such as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. You can explore the many different types of banks with descriptions of how they function, varieties of bonds and how they can affect you, the structures of hedge funds and how the criminality and money intertwine through fraud, rogue states and cybercrime. The Book of Money Includes... A Brief History of Money Rich World, Poor World Money and Government Banks & Banking The Markets Investing & Finance Money & Business The Science of Money Money & The Law Life Stages Saving, Spending & Giving ... and much more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book holds up for scrutiny a great paradox at the core of the American Dream: a passionate belief in the principle of democracy combined with an equally passionate celebration of the creation of wealth. Americans treasure an open, equal society, yet we also admire those fortunate few who amass riches on a scale that undermines social equality. In today's era of "vulture capitalist" hedge fund managers, internet fortunes, and a growing concern over inequality in American life, should we cling to both parts of the paradox? Can we?/div To understand the problems that vast individual fortunes pose for democratic values, Robert Dalzell turns to American history. He presents an intriguing cast of wealthy individuals from colonial times to the present, including George Washington, one of the richest Americans of his day, the "robber baron" John D. Rockefeller, and Oprah Winfrey, for whom extreme wealth is inextricably tied to social concerns. Dalzell uncovers the sources of contradictory attitudes toward the rich, how the very rich have sought to be perceived as "good rich," and the facts behind the widespread notion that wealth and generosity go hand in hand. In a thoughtful and balanced conclusion, the author explores the cost of our longstanding attitudes toward the rich./divDIV DIV DIVAmong the case studies in America's Good Rich:/divDIVPuritan merchant Robert Keayne/divDIVGeorge Washington/divDIVManufacturers Amos & Abbot Lawrence/divDIVOil magnate John D. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Halliday examines the moral grounding of the right to bequeath or transfer wealth. He engages with contemporary concerns about wealth inequality, class hierarchy, and taxation, while also drawing on the history of the egalitarian, utilitarian, and liberal traditions in political philosophy. He presents an egalitarian case for restricting inherited wealth, arguing that unrestricted inheritance is unjust to the extent that it enables and enhances the intergenerational replication of inequality. Here, inequality is understood in a group-based sense: the unjust effects of inheritance are principally in its tendency to concentrate certain opportunities into certain groups. This results in what Halliday describes as 'economic segregation'. He defends a specific proposal about how to tax inherited wealth: roughly, inheritance should be taxed more heavily when it comes from old money. He rebuts some sceptical arguments against inheritance taxes, and makes suggestions about how tax schemes should be designed.

Book excerpt: This unique encyclopedia provides a fascinating and fully comprehensive description of stars and their natures and is filled with beautiful color images. The book begins by telling the story of astronomy, from ancient constellations and star names to the modern coordinate system. Further chapters explain magnitudes, distances, star motions and the Galaxy at large. Double stars, clusters and variables are introduced and once the different kinds of stars are in place, later chapters examine stellar evolution, beginning with the interstellar medium and star formation, proceeding to our Sun and its characteristics and then the ageing process of solar-type and high mass stars. The book ends by showing how this information can be combined into a grand synthesis. Detailed cross-referencing enables the reader to explore topics in depth and makes this an invaluable work both for beginners and those with a more advanced interest in stars and stellar evolution.

Book excerpt: Visionary in scope, Intellectual Capital is the first book that shows how to turn the untapped knowledge of an organization into its greatest competitive weapon. Thomas A. Stewart demonstrates how knowledge--not natural resources, machinery, or financial capital--has become the most important factor in economic life. Through practical advice, stories, and case histories, Stewart reveals how organizations and individuals can create and use the knowledge assets they need. Dazzling in its ability to make conceptual sense of the economic revolution we are living through, this ingenious book cuts through the vague rhetoric of "paradigm shifts" to show how the Information Age economy really works. Intellectual Capital should be read as if the futures of your company and your career depend on it. They do.
