Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Classics for English Readers A few words stand here by way of explanation and acknowledgment. The biography (in which the quotation of authorities or reference to them would have necessitated a doubling of the allotted space) is founded on Schubert's life of Kant, and on the early memoirs, which have been largely corrected and added' to in accordance with more recent information. Special mention on this head is due to Professor Benno Erdmann's essays on Knutzen and the 'kritik to Dr Emil Arnoldt's sketch of Kant's early life; and to several articles in different numbers of the 'altpreussische Monatsschrift.' For the communication of the last I am indebted to the kindness of Dr Rudolf Reicke of Konigsberg, whose devotion to Kant is known to all brethren of the craft, and whose promised edition of the philosopher's corre spondence will enable the last thirty years of his life to be written with more fulness than heretofore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 2000 years, philosophy has been our best guide to the experience of being human, and the true nature of reality. From Aristotle, Plato, Epicurus, Confucius, Cicero and Heraclitus in ancient times to 17th century rationalists Descartes, Leibniz and Spinoza, from 20th-century greats Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Baudrillard and Simone de Beauvoir to contemporary thinkers Michael Sandel, Peter Singer and Slavoj Zizek, 50 Philosophy Classics explores key writings that have shaped the discipline and had an impact on the real world. Philosophy can no longer be confined to academia, and 50 Philosophy Classics shows how powerful it can be as a tool for opening our minds and helping us think. Whether you are fascinated or daunted by the big questions of how to think, how to be, how to act and how to see, this is the perfect introduction to some of humanity's greatest minds and their landmark books.

The works of Benedetto Croce, the founder of the new school, have nowhere, perhaps, been more welcomed and discussed than here; and his chief books are all now accessible to English readers. But Croce represents the first stage only of the new movement his position is by no means the last word of the school: it may indeed be said to point out new paths for thought rather than to lay down a final and com plete system. The new paths have been followed with very striking results by Giovanni Gentile and Guido de Ruggiero. Gentile has been closely studied by specialists in England for some years, but his works have never been translated, and his name is little known except to professed philosophers De Ruggiero is even less known, and the present volume represents his first appearance in English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English and American Philosophy Since 1800: A Critical Survey I ought perhaps also to say that philosophy here, in line with the purpose I have just set forth, is taken in a some what restricted sense, to the exclusion of certain matters which a history of philosophy might be expected to cover. For the most part I propose to deal only with those central and illumi nating points Of view which constitute a man's philosophy in the distinctive sense; and the special philosophical disciplines, accordingly, receive attention only as they have some pretty direct bearing upon this. There are, for example, technical developments in the realm of logic and scientific method, that many would rate as Of large importance for the history of thought, of which no account in detail will be found in these pages. Even in the field of ethics, and of metaphysics itself, such technical problems as are separable from a comprehensive philosophic outlook are relatively neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Classics for English Readers: Hesiod and Theognis Nearest to him in claims of antiquity, even if we grant that his style is less interesting, and his matter not so attractive: Indeed one argument for including Hesiod in the series of Ancient Classics for English Readers may be found in the fact that nine out of twelve stu dents finish their classical course with but the vaguest acquaintance with his remains. Such, therefore, ought to be as thankful as the unlearned for an idea of what he actually or probably wrote. And it is this which the larger portion or this volume endeavours to supply. The poet's life has been compiled from ancient and modern biographies with a constant eye to the internal evidence of his extant poetry, for which the editions of Paley, Goettling, and Dubner, have been chiefly studied. For illustrative quotation, use has been chiefly made of the English versions of Elton, good for the most part, and, as regards the Theogony, almost Miltonic. For the Works and Days, ' the little-known version of the Elizabethan George Chapman - a. Biographical rarity made accessible by Mr Hooper's edition in J. R. Smith's Library of Old Authors - has been here and there pressed into our service. A parallel or two to Hesiod's Shield of Hercules, ' from Homer's Shield of Achilles, belong to an unpublished version by Mr Richard Garnett. But to no student of Hesiod are so many thanks due as to Mr F. A. Paley, whose notes have been of the utmost use, as the most successful attempt to unravel Hesiodic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Beautiful IT will be conceded as generally true, that the English writers have advocated no theory which allows the Beautiful to be universal and absolute; nor have they professedly founded their views on original and ultimate principles. The conclusion to be arrived at from the works of Hume, Burke, Alison, and other eminent writers on this subject, might be stated in the lan guage of Hume. Beauty is no quality in things themselves; it exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different Beauty: one mind perceives deformity where another is sensible of Beauty; and every indi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Realism Philosophy, not theology and religion, is the writer's quest; and an argument on God and crea tion is introduced only for the sake of philosophy, which required it as a condition of intellectual continuity and final unity of conception. As it is a beautiful custom for authors in their preface to designate the sources and lines of light Whence their own radiance, which might not else be clearly seen in some cases, the present writer wishes to say that he is indebted to all thinkers who have gone before him, both the known and the (to him) great unknown; and he sincerely thanks them for their inestimable benefactions, of the value of which to him, as indicated in this volume, he invites the philosophic public to judge, if it can find time, now or in the future. It is an emotion indeed, and therefore implies excitement; but, compared with many others that are ardently pursued, the emotion of the Beautiful is very calm. It is, as it were, sunshine in the soul. But let us not discourse upon the generalities of our theme; for iteration is hateful; and the generalities of taste have Often been set forth perfectly well in the English language already, and in all the languages of Europe. In many of the leading American uni versities the modern novel has been serving as the subject for lectures and as the material for private study, in the course of which the Short-story received afair share of consideration. No doubt, it is in consequence of this incessant discussion of modern fiction and of its methods that the author and the pub lishers have been made aware of a de mand for the present essay, with such revision and annotation as might render it more useful, not only to the earnest student, but also to the casual reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy Historical and Critical The Author has not supplied a preface to this work. The method and plan of his treatment is so extremely simple, and his general exposition of the subject so clear, and within the available limits so exhaustive, that he may well have left the book to speak for itself. He is, of course, a materialist of the most advanced modern school, and as such expresses his opinions in the most outspoken and uncompromising manner. The subject itself - a summary of the various philosophic conceptions of man and the universe - being momover of a most comprehensive character, there are no abstract and but few concrete matters that he has not had occasion to deal with, more or less fully, from the atheistic point of view. But this very circumstance would seem to call for a few words of warning to the unwary the more so that the work in its English dress, and as one of a popular series, must necessarily fall into the hands of many readers who are apt to be carried away by a certain speciousness of reasoning, and who are not always possessed of a ready answer to a line of argument undoubtedly urged with great vigour and cogency.
