Book excerpt: Between 1997 and 2008, Philip-Lorca diCorcia completed 11 photographic portfolios in collaboration with W magazine's creative director Dennis Freedman. In their epic scope and visual luxuriance, these enigmatic and glamour-soaked photographic narratives stand as one of the most ambitious editorial projects of the last decade. DiCorcia and Freedman traveled the globe to make these stories, deploying fabulous locations ranging from a Lautner house in Los Angeles and the Mariinsky Opera House in St. Petersburg to Windows on the World at the top of the World Trade Center and a notorious "club échangiste" (swinger's club) in Paris. The cast of characters included iconic models Nadja Auermann, Guinevere van Seenus, Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson, Shalom Harlow and Hannelore Knuts, the actress Isabelle Huppert, the designer Marc Jacobs plus people cast on location. DiCorcia's fashion stories are collected for the first time in this superbly designed monograph, and reveal themselves as a masterpiece of staged photography and photographic storytelling. Philip-Lorca diCorcia was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1951. He received his MFA in Photography from Yale University in 1979. DiCorcia's work has been the subject of solo shows at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, among others. He has been named a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is included in the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. His previous books include A Storybook Life (2003) and Thousand (2007), a collection of Polaroids that was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. DiCorcia lives and works in New York City.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia is best known for his elaborately staged scenes made to look like real life, in which he meticulously plans every element of a shot-lighting, pose, etc, before taking the photograph, creating the "ur" moment. This is conceptual photography with the veneer of the documentary. As such, his photographs have been integral to contemporary dialogues on street photography, portraiture and constructed versus spontaneous tableaus. His most recent body of work, titled "Heads," is a departure from this method. Setting up shop in New York City, diCorcia took unstaged pictures of passers by that follow in the street photography tradition of Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Harry Callahan and Robert Frank. DiCorcia's work helps to redefine the genre, bringing street photography into our postmodern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From early amateur snapshots to today’s advanced digital images, photography has been the perfect means to record people’s lives. This provocative book explores the complex and varied ways that five contemporary photographers––Tina Barney, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Larry Sultan––use their own daily experiences as inspiration for their art. Each of these artists has created highly personal, shifting, and intriguing visions of his or her life. The works range from Tina Barney’s orchestrated depictions of her friends and family in affluent New England settings to Nan Goldin’s unabashed portrayal of intimate, and often brutally honest, moments. Sally Mann turned to her children and their surroundings as her subject, and Larry Sultan has accomplished something similar in his depictions of his parents. Philip-Lorca diCorcia offers up his “storybook life” in photographs that—like others in this group—span nearly twenty years. So the Story Goes is arranged in portfolio format and features beautiful color reproductions of about twenty photographs by each artist. With an introductory essay that examines the development of personal narrative in photography, as well as insightful entries on each artist, the book analyzes how these works tell a life’s story.

Book excerpt: From its inception in 1947, the Polaroid system inspired artists to experiment - to dazzling effect - with the cameras' unique technologies. Edwin Land, the inventor of the first Polaroid instant camera, remarked on his discovery, "Photography will never be the same." And he was right. This fascinating journey through the Polaroid era documents the evolution of instant photography. Hundreds of color images celebrate the myriad ways Polaroid photographs were used and ingeniously manipulated by Chuck Close, Walker Evans, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Lucas Samaras, William Wegman, and others. In addition, the book features essays addressing the unique technology of instant photography and the marketing genius of the Polaroid Corporation. Interviews with artists reveal how Polaroids affected and, in many instances, forever changed the way artists captured the world around them. AUTHOR: Mary-Kay Lombino is the Emily Hargroves Fisher '57 and Richard B. Fisher Curator at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She has curated several exhibitions including Off the Shelf: New Forms in Contemporary Artists' Books and Utopian Mirage: Social Metaphors in Contemporary Photography. ILLUSTRATIONS: 230 photos

Book excerpt: Recognising strangeness in familiar objects, the present in the past, the construed in what is authentic -- the four masterly photographers show excerpts from our world in which the boundary between reality and imagination becomes blurred. From fleeting everyday scenes to mysterious happenings and historical events, they reveal a complex and multi-layered reality. Thomas Demand, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Andreas Gursky and Jeff Wall use the proximity to reality and the momentary nature of photography in order to create their idiosyncratic viewpoints of reality. What is real? They play with the viewers' perceptions, irritate and invite them to an individual interpretation of what is shown. This exclusive volume presents the works of the stars of the contemporary international photography scene magnificently and in clearly narrated texts.

Book excerpt: Nan Goldin shoots campaigns for Prada, David LaChapelle does Camel cigarette ads, and Jurgen Teller got his start photographing models in i-D, W, and The Face. The debate between aesthetic images and commercial pressure has perhaps never been so relevant and complex as it is today, with the increasing commercialization of the art world, the not insignificant exploratory aspects of fashion photography, and our constantly expanding realm of visual references. To study these tensions and overlaps, Chic Clicks invited some 40 photographers to present both their free work and their published editorials from fashion magazines and advertising campaigns. Photographers well-known for their commercial work offer personal and exploratory prints; those who gained prominence in the fine arts display work they were subsequently hired to do for fashion companies and magazines. Accompanying essays approach fashion photography from various perspectives, from that of cutting-edge fashion magazines to the field of contemporary art photography.

Book excerpt: The story of cult figure Cookie Mueller's life through an oral history composed of more than 80 interviews with those who knew her, with photographs by David Armstrong, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar and others Cookie Mueller (1949-1989) was a firecracker, a cult figure, a wild child, a writer, a go-go dancer, a mother and a queer icon. A child of suburban 1950s Maryland, she made her name first as an actress in the films of John Waters, and then as an art critic and columnist, a writer of hilarious stories and a maven of New York's downtown art world. Edgewise, by Berlin-based actress and writer Chloé Griffin, tells the story of Cookie's life through an oral history composed of more than 80 interviews with the people who knew her, including John Waters, Mink Stole, Gary Indiana, Sharon Niesp, Max Mueller, Linda Yablonsky, Richard Hell, Amos Poe and Raymond Foye. The contributors take us from the late-1960s artist communes of Baltimore to 1970s Provincetown and New York, through 1980s Berlin and Positano. Along with the text, Edgewise includes artwork, unpublished photographs and archival material and photography by Philip-Lorca diCorcia, David Armstrong, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar and others.

Book excerpt: First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work -- Provided by the publisher.

Book excerpt: Street photography is perhaps the defining genre of photographic art. Seminal works by Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand display photography s astonishing dance with life, and its unique role in forming our perceptions of the modern world. The Present is Paul Graham s contribution to this legacy. The images in this book come unbidden from the streets of New York, but are not quite what we might expect, for each moment is brought to us with its double two images taken from the same location, separated only by the briefest fraction of time. We find ourselves in sibling worlds, where a businessman with an eye patch becomes, an instant later, a man with an exaggerated wink; a woman eating a banana walks towards us, and a small focus shift reveals the blind man right behind her. Although there are flashes of surprise a woman walks confidently down the street one moment, only to tumble to the ground a second later for the most part there is little of the drama street photography is addicted to. People arrive and depart this quiet stage, with the smallest shift of time and attention revealing the thread between them. A suited young businessman crosses the road, only to be replaced by his homeless alternate; a woman in a pink t-shirt is engulfed with tears, but seconds later there is a content shopper in her place. The Present gives us an impression quite different to most street photography where life is frozen rigid. Here we glimpse the continuum: before/after, coming/going, either/or. A present that is a fleeting and provisional alignment, with no singularity or definitiveness; a world of shifting awareness and alternate realities, where life twists and spirals in a fraction of a second to another moment, another world, another consciousness. The Present is the third in Paul Graham s trilogy of projects on America which began with American Night in 2003 and was followed in 2007 by a shimmer of possibility (winner of the Paris Photo Book Prize 2011 for the most significant photo book of the past 15 years). The Present takes Graham s reputation as a master of the book form to new heights, employing multiple gatefolds to convey passages of time and the unfolding of urban life.
