Book excerpt: "Hugh Steers: The Complete Paintings is the first publication on the career of American figurative painter Hugh Steers (1962-95), who died of AIDS at the age of 32. Committed to figurative painting at a time when it had fallen out of favor, Steers painted expressionist-realist narratives of a life shadowed by isolation and mortality, yet infused with wry humor, camp and what Steers himself called a 'gorgeous bleakness.' Steers consciously merged AIDS, intimacy and the body into the traditional vocabulary of painting. With his vulnerable subjects depicted in hospital rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, Steers engaged with radical ideas about male intimacy, queer politics, fragility and health care at the height of the AIDS crisis. Featuring more than 600 full-color images of Steers' paintings on canvas and paper, this volume provides a long-overdue, expansive view of the artist's career and impact."--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: Robert Gober rose to prominence in the mid-1980s and was quickly acknowledged as one of the most significant artists of his generation. In the years since, his reputation has continued to grow, commensurate with the rich and complex body of work he has produced. Published in conjunction with the first comprehensive large-scale survey of the artists career to take place in the United States, this publication presents his works in all mediums, including individual sculptures and immersive sculptural environments, as well as a distinctive selection of drawings, prints, and photographs. Prepared in close collaboration with the artist, it traces the development of a remarkable body of work, highlighting themes and motifs that emerged in the early 1980s and continue to inform the artists work today. An essay by Hilton Als, and an in-depth chronology with extensive input from the artist himself, foregrounds images from Gobers archives, including many neverbefore- published photographs of works in progress.

Book excerpt: This generously illustrated book offers the first comprehensive overview of the work of the Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Francis Stark. Frances Stark deftly deploys text, image, and literary sources in her drawings, collages, paintings, and video works that reflect on her roles as artist, mother, woman, and teacher. Throughout her career she has experimented with alternative modes of expression, as in her critically acclaimed video My Best Thing; her PowerPoint work Structures that fit my opening (and other parts considered in relation to their whole); and the performance Put a Song in Your Thing. Companion to an exhibition that documents Stark's 25-year long career, this book contains 125 works in which Stark employs words and images to create provocative and self-referential works that speak to the complexities of daily life. This book includes fullpage detailed images that provide an insight into the highly tactile and complex nature of Stark's work. Also included are newly commissioned essays, and a collection of brief reflections by a variety of prominent artists and writers whom Stark asked to revisit specific topics they've discussed or written about previously. Filled with high-quality reproductions and thoughtful commentary, this book is the definitive resource on Stark's accomplished, varied, and affecting body of work.

Book excerpt: Fade to Black is the series title for a group of projects organized or "triggered" by conceptual artist Philippe Parreno over the last 10 years. Parreno is the initiator, but has sometimes pursued his work in collaboration with colleagues such as Rirkrit Tiravanija (with whom he animated ventriloquist's dummies) or Liam Gillick (with whom he hung a fictional commercial banner along the highway in Bangkok). Fade to Black gathers 11 titled images of those projects, each photograph testimony to an action or ephemeral installation, and offers the images in glow-in-the-dark ink that must be exposed to light before it can be seen--and allowed to fade away again--in the dark. Fade to Black therefore exists without being visible until the viewer makes it so, and then only for a brief predetermined window: an ideal product for an artist who enjoys using time as a material. Each ghostly image in this unique, large-format, limited-edition artist's book is bound as a detachable print.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy R. Lippard's famous book, itself resembling an exhibition, is now brought full circle in an exhibition (and catalog) resembling her book. “Conceptual art, for me, means work in which the idea is paramount and the material form is secondary, lightweight, ephemeral, cheap, unpretentious and/or 'dematerialized.'” —Lucy R. Lippard, Six Years In 1973 the critic and curator Lucy R. Lippard published Six Years, a book with possibly the longest subtitle in the bibliography of art: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966 to 1972: a cross-reference book of information on some esthetic boundaries: consisting of a bibliography into which are inserted a fragmented text, art works, documents, interviews, and symposia, arranged chronologically and focused on so-called conceptual or information or idea art with mentions of such vaguely designated areas as minimal, anti-form, systems, earth, or process art, occurring now in the Americas, Europe, England, Australia, and Asia (with occasional political overtones) edited and annotated by Lucy R. Lippard. Six Years, sometimes referred to as a conceptual art object itself, not only described and embodied the new type of art-making that Lippard was intent on identifying and cataloging, it also exemplified a new way of criticizing and curating art. Nearly forty years later, the Brooklyn Museum takes Lippard's celebrated experiment in curated concatenation as a template, turning a book that resembled an exhibition into an exhibition materializing the ideas in her book. The artworks and essays featured in this publication recall the thrill that was tangible in Lippard's original documentation, reminding us that during the late sixties and early seventies all possible social and material parameters of art (making) were played with, worked over, inverted, reduced, expanded, and rejected. By tracing Lippard's own activities in those years, the book also documents the early blurring of boundaries among critical, curatorial, and artistic practices. With more than 200 images of work by dozens of artists (printed in color throughout), this book brings Lippard's curatorial experiment full circle.

Book excerpt: The artist Rainer Ganahl has been creatively adapting the writings of Karl Marx to his own work since the 1990s. The German philosopher's ideas have galvanized projects such as Ganahl's irreverent fashion show Commes des Marxists, a series of obscene food sculptures inspired by the "credit crunch" of 2008, and a Karl Marx fire extinguisher, which allows the thinker's wisdom to be sprayed onto any conflict. There has never been a more fitting time, however, for the release of this book, which appears on the 10th anniversary of the global financial crisis, and 200 years after Marx's birth. In more than 700 pages, Manhattan Marxism assembles essays, photos, and other documentation from dozens of Ganahl's Marx-themed projects from the past decade. Contributors Arthur Fink, Rainer Ganahl, Liam Gillick, Johan Hartle, Steve Lyons, Antonio Negri, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak
