Book excerpt: Philadelphia's Washington Square, a shaded 6.6-acre plot near the nation's birthplace at Independence Hall, has been a focal point of the city's history for more than 300 years. Designated by William Penn in 1683 as an open space, the square served as a potter's field for its first 100 years. The remains of more than 2,000 indigents, soldiers, and yellow fever victims rest beneath its sod. By 1825, the graveyard was closed and the square was redesigned as a public promenade. Rude huts on its periphery gave way to fashionable middle-class homes. Washington Square became a destination for publishing and advertising, home to the likes of J. B. Lippincott, W. B. Saunders, Curtis Publishing Company, Farm Journal, and advertising giant N. W. Ayer. In the 1950s, its Society Hill neighborhood was restored, and a memorial to the unknown soldier of the American Revolution was dedicated in the square. Today the square is again attracting the affluent with condominiums in its converted publishing houses.

Book excerpt: Catherine Sloper, a plain and unassuming young woman in mid-19th century New Work, becomes entangled in a battle of wills with her overbearing father, Dr. Austin Sloper. When Catherine falls in love with the charming but penniless Morris Townsend, her father is convinced that Townsend is only after her inheritance. As tensions rise and loyalties are tested, Catherine must navigate the complexities of love, betrayal, and familial duty. Set against the backdrop of the genteel society of Washington Square, James' masterful prose captures the nuances of human relationships with precision and depth. Washington Square is a timeless exploration of the clash between duty and desire, innocence and manipulation, making it a captivating read that continues to resonate with readers today. HENRY JAMES [1843 -1916] was born in New York but emigrated to Europe early in life. He is one of the most important figures in Anglo-Saxon turn-of-the-century literature, with novels such as The American [1877] and the horror novel The Turn of the Screw [1898].

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia and Its Environs Washington Square was once a Potter's field. Many soldiers, victims of the smallpox and camp fever, were buried here during the Revolution. The ground under the waving trees and springing grass, where the birds sing and the children play, is literally full of dead men's bones, but the grass is no less green, the sunshine no less bright, on that account, and the dead sleep none the less peacefully, for the life above them. Along the way, readers will travel the length of South Broad Street from city hall toward the Naval Yard and the former sports complex and will wander by Market Street's former bustling shops--such as Gimbel's, Wanamaker's, and Leary's quaint bookstore--to the street's terminus at the Delaware River port and the Camden ferries. They will become reacquainted with Independence Square, Washington Square, and the magnificent buildings that once surrounded them and will also revisit South Philadelphia and its Italian Market. These images grant an opportunity to explore Philadelphia's streets, peer into its historic nooks, and seek out buildings that have long since gone the way of the wrecking ball.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, two of America's most revered symbols of freedom, date back to the British rule of the American colonies. The main structure of Independence Hall was completed in 1732, and the final casting of the Liberty Bell was completed in 1753. Visited by over two million people yearly, these historic icons have been used as backdrops for many political and social demonstrations and speeches. Filled with images from the archives of Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia Department of Records, and collections from around the country, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell illustrates how these two historic relics generate a sense of pride and patriotism set forth by the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we help distressed neighborhoods recover from a generation of economic loss and reposition themselves for success in today's economy? While many have proposed solutions to the problems of neighborhoods suffering from economic disinvestment, John Kromer has actually put them to work successfully as Philadelphia's housing director. Part war story, part how-to manual, and part advocacy for more effective public policy, Neighborhood Recovery describes how a blending of public-sector leadership and community initiative can bring success to urban communities. Kromer's framework for neighborhood recovery addresses issues such as - neighborhood strategic planning - home ownership and financing - the role of community-based organizations - public housing - work-readiness and job training for neighborhood residents - housing for homeless people and others with specialized needs - the importance of advocacy in influencing and advancing neighborhood reinvestment policy. Neighborhood Recovery presents a policy approach that cities can use to improve the physical condition of their neighborhoods and help urban residents compete for good jobs in the metropolitan economy. Kromer's experience in Philadelphia reveals challenges and opportunities that can decisively influence the future of neighborhoods in many other American cities.

Book excerpt: Officially known as Washington Square Park, Philadelphia’s Society Hill district contains an impressive number of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century houses—perhaps as many as any other comparable area in the United States. This book presents, in text and pictures, the stories of its outstanding Colonial and Early American mansions and dwellings and simple row houses; its churches and other exceptional historic buildings. Old Philadelphia Houseson Society Hill contains both notes and illustrations on the design and architectural details of early Philadelphia row houses. There are also enlightening chapters devoted to such famous places as Bell’s Court, the Drinker House and Drinker’s Court, the Head House and Old Market, the Hill-Physick-Keith House and the Latta House, Old Pine Street Church and the Pennsylvania Hospital, the Man Full of Trouble Inn and many others, all complemented by photos. Featured are the uses of brick and the traditional design and decoration of the period’s interiors, showing antique furniture and prevailing modes of interior decoration. The 150 photographs strike a nice balance of exteriors and interiors, showing characteristic basics and details of structure and charming furniture pieces and accessories of old-time daily living. Tidbits of information concerning such personages as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Benjamin Rush and other eminent Americans are scattered throughout the book.

Book excerpt: The following is a survey of the current memorial plaques, waysides and identification plaques found throughout Washington Square as of January 2006. The memorial plaques in the square include everything from plaques that honor individuals and their work, those that commemorate important events, to identifying tree genus and species. Current waysides contain history about the Square and Philadelphia, while the identification plaques consist of various informational markers. The accompanying map locates the forty-two plaques and waysides currently within Washington Square. This map is divided into quadrants and further divided into zones, with each plaque and wayside appropriately located on the map. Other information found in this survey includes dimensions of the metal plaque or stone wayside, material from which the marker is made, installation or dedication date (if known), and the inscription that can be found on the plaque or wayside. In addition, two photographs of the plaque or wayside are included, one being a close shot of the marker at the time this survey was conducted, and another photograph showing the single marker within the wider surroundings of Washington Square.
