Book excerpt: At a time when Côte d’Ivoire was experiencing a military-political crisis and was split in two (2002), the Coupé-Décalé appeared as a real innovation in the Ivorian musical universe. It caused a “sensation” with cultural practices, a dress code, choreographic concepts and musical forms that were atypical of the time. While pre-existing genres, such as Reggae, Hip Hop and Zuglou, are positioned as “committed” music, Coupé-Décalé, on the other hand, is in a completely different register: that of bringing joy, setting the mood, forgetting the sad reality of this difficult period. Nearly two decades later, the Coupé-Décalé continues to enjoy great popularity among a community of fans who are sensitive to the ideology promoted and the social practices that derive from it. This study develops a reflection on the Coupé-Décalé, a form of cultural mediation that consolidates a subcultural identity. It aims first to show the pictorial and imagined representations of the youth subculture through musical content, then to examine the actors, practices and interactions that lead to the development of the musical work, and finally, to demonstrate how the public and the producers, through the reception of the music and the identification with the Coupé-Décalé, constitute a subculture. In short, the Coupé-Décalé is a subcultural identity. It specifies a new relationship to politics, to social norms and, above all, a quest for pleasure, endangerment and amusement. Au moment où la Côte d’Ivoire connaît une crise militaro-politique et est coupée en deux (2002), le Coupé- Décalé apparaît comme une véritable innovation dans l’univers musical ivoirien. Il fait “ sensation” avec des pratiques culturelles, un code vestimentaire, des concepts chorégraphiques et des formes musicales atypiques à l’époque. Pendant que les genres préexistants notamment le Reggae, le Hip Hop et le Zouglou se positionnent comme des musiques “engagées”, le Coupé-Décalé, quant à lui, s’inscrit dans un tout autre registre : celui d’apporter de la joie, de mettre de l’ambiance, d’oublier la triste réalité de cette période difficile. Près de deux décennies plus tard, le Coupé-Décalé continue de jouir d’une grande popularité auprès d’une communauté de fans sensibles à l’idéologie promue et aux pratiques sociales qui en découlent. Cette étude développe une réflexion sur le Coupé-Décalé, une forme de médiation culturelle qui consolide une identité sous-culturelle. Elle veut d’abord montrer les représentations imagées et imaginées de la sous- culture jeune à travers les contenus musicaux, ensuite examiner les acteurs, pratiques et interactions qui conduisent à l’élaboration de l’œuvre musicale, et enfin, démontrer en quoi le public et les producteurs, à travers la réception de la musique et l’identification au Coupé-Décalé, constituent une sous-culture. En définitive, le Coupé-Décalé constitue une identité sous-culturelle. Book excerpt: At the origin of this volume, a simple question: what to make of that surprisingly monotonous series of statements produced by our societies and our philosophers that all converge in one theme - the importance of difference? To clarify the meaning of the difference at stake here, we have tried to rephrase it in terms of the two major and mutually competing paradigms provided by the history of phenomenology only to find both of them equally unable to accommodate this difference without violence. Neither the ethical nor the ontological approach can account for a subject that insists on playing a part of its own rather than following the script provided for it by either Being or the Good. What appears to be, from a Heideggerian or Levinasian perspective, an unwillingness to open up to what offers to deliver us from the condition of subjectivity is analysed in these pages as a structure in its own right. Far from being the wilful, indifferent and irresponsive being its critics have portrayed it to be, the so-called 'postmodern' subject is essentially finite, not even able to assume the transcendence to which it owes its singularity. This inability is not a lack - it points instead to a certain unthought shared by both Heidegger and Levinas which sets the terms for a discussion no longer our own. Instead of blaming Heidegger for underdeveloping 'being-with', we should rather stress that his account of mineness may be, in the light of contemporary philosophy, what stands most in need of revision. And, instead of hailing Levinas as the critic whose stress on the alterity of the Other corrects Heidegger's existential solipsism, the problems into which Levinas runs in defining that alterity call for a different diagnosis and a corresponding change in the course that phenomenology has taken since. Instead of preoccupying itself with the invisible, we should focus on the structures of visibility that protect us from its terror. The result? An account of difference that is neither ontological nor ethical, but 'mè-ontological', and that can help us understand some of the problems our societies have come to face (racism, sexism, multiculturalism, pluralism). And, in the wake of this, an unexpected defence of what is at stake in postmodernism and in the question it has refused to take lightly: who are we? Finally, an homage to Arendt and Lyotard who, if read through each other's lenses, give an exact articulation to the question with which our age struggles: how to think the 'human condition' once one realizes that there is an 'inhuman' side to it which, instead of being its mere negation, turns out to be that without which it would come to lose its humanity?

Book excerpt: In a way, the problem of the body in Husserl' s writings is relatively straightfo r ward: it is an exercise in faithful description and elaboration of a sense or mean ing, that of the "lived body," using the tools and methods of intentional analysis. What is to be described is nothing exotic, but a recognizable, familiar element of experience; further, it is not something limited to any special type of experience, but is ever-present, whether it is in the background or the center of attention. Thus the lived body is, in a way, the most mundane of topics in phenomenology, to be du1y noted as a matter of course--of course we should include the body in the analysis of lived space; of course the body is an element in the consciousness of other persons. Along with the obviousness of the task is the impression that, at least at the outset, the problem of the body does not appear to tax the resources of intentional analysis, forcing us to raise critical questions about the scope and limits of phenomenological philosophy. There is nothing extreme about the problem of the body-it demands neither that we discern structures of the end most interior of consciousness, as does the study of "internal time conscious ness," nor does it calion us to fix the sense of the normativity that constitutes the "logic" of the world by grounding it in an absolute foundation.
