Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of French Theater by : Edward Forman
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of French Theater written by Edward Forman and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "French theater" evokes most immediately the glories of the classical period and the peculiarities of the Theater of the Absurd. It has given us the works of Corneille, Racine, and Moliere. In the Romantic era there was Alexander Dumas and surrealist works of Alfred Jarry, and then the Theater of the Absurd erupted in rationalistic France with Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Jean-Paul Sartre. The Historical Dictionary of French Theater relates the history of the French theater through a chronology, introduction, bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on authors, trends, genres, concepts, and literary and historical developments that played a central role in the evolution of French theater.
Book Synopsis Knights of the Cross by : Jeffrey Strickland
Download or read book Knights of the Cross written by Jeffrey Strickland and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Templars is one of the most desolate and obscure in the history of the medieval West: created as a military-religious order to defend the Holy Land. After becoming one of the most powerful and influential institutions of all Christianity, the Temple was put under procedure at the beginning of the 14th Century and then suspended in 1312, because of the serious charges weighed against its members. The last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, chose to die as a testimony of his innocence, contrasting the guilt of brothers who had been imputed to them, heresy, adherence to an anti-Christian beliefs, corruption of morals, and idolatry. The Templars have been linked with the shroud of Turin, the Holy Grail, and the Ark of the Covenant. None of these can be substantiated. What can be substantiated is that, though arrested, tortured, and burned at the stake, Pope Clement V absolved them from heresy in 1308, as discovered in a secret Vatican parchment in 2001, and released to the public in 2007.

Book Synopsis A Critical Study of the Tragedies of Robert Garnier (1545-90) by : John Holyoake
Download or read book A Critical Study of the Tragedies of Robert Garnier (1545-90) written by John Holyoake and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garnier is by common consent the greatest tragedian of the French Renaissance. The core of this book consists of detailed critical commentaries on each of his seven tragedies. The stress is placed on the individual qualities of each separate tragedy, although some attention is given to the need to synthesize as well as to Garnier's characteristic qualities. The introduction deals with possible approaches to sixteenth-century tragedy in general while a preliminary chapter traces the historical development of tragedy before Garnier; there are sections on imitation, originality, sources, rhetoric and performance. The author concludes that Garnier does not conform to norms as much as has been claimed and that it is misleading to divide his development so neatly into three phases.
