This investigation included the excavation of a 19.3 km (12 miles) long stretch of the Bayou Teche channel as well as six terrestrial project items and two proposed access roads. The six terrestrial project items consisted of three proposed staging areas (Staging Areas 1 - 3) nom which dredging operations will be coordinated and three proposed disposal areas (Disposal Areas 1 - 3) that will receive spoil dredged from the river bottom. The terrestrial project items surveyed comprised a total of 41.32 ha (102.1 ac). Fieldwork for this project was completed during January of 2000 on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This investigation was completed on behalf of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., in September and October of 1999. As part of the cultural resources component associated with this undertaking, an archeological inventory was authorized to assess three separate tracts within the Area of Potential Effect; these totaled 144.4 ha (356.8 ac) in size. Each of the three project items was assessed as having a high probability for containing intact cultural deposits by archeologists on staff with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Fieldwork for this project consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by systematic shovel testing throughout the Area of Potential Effect. This investigation resulted in the identification and subsequent assessment of four standing structures (24-896, 24-897, 24-898, and 24-899). In addition, previously recorded Site 16IV23 fell within the limits of the overall Area of Potential Effect and it was revisited as part of this investigation. The site, which had been situated on a natural levee between an unnamed creek and the Lower Grand River, has been destroyed by prior borrow activities associated with the construction of the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee. On the basis of this intensive cultural resources investigation, four standing structures and one previously recorded archeological site were identified. None of the cultural resources identified within the Area of Potential Effect associated with the Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Project possess the qualities of significance as defined by the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation (36 CFR 60.4 A-D). No additional testing of these three project items is recommendc.

Book excerpt: The first stage of a cultural resources inventory of Corps-owned lands in the Atchafalaya Basin Floodway included survey within two parcels (North and South Farms) with a total of 2400 acres. Auger tests to 2 and 4 meters failed to recover artifacts or sites. A plan for archeological investigations was developed for a much larger area, bounded by U.S. Hwy 190, the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee, Interstate-10, and the Atchafalaya River. A review of previous investigations in the Atchafalaya Basin and of geomorphology indicates that sites predating the Coles Creek Period are unlikely. Historical research indicates that most activity occurred between about 1850 to 1880. After that, harvesting of timber occurred on a large-scale, commercial basis. Because of extreme rates of deposition within the larger area, this report recommends that archeological investigations be undertaken only in very restricted areas.
