Book excerpt: Abstract : The objective of the report is to implement the phase-field model in the Abaqus standard to compute the fracture properties of a glass strengthened by an ion-exchange process. Implemented the phase-field model which is based on the rate-independent variational principle of diffuse fracture in Abaqus standard software using the UEL and UMAT subroutines. SDVINI subroutine is used to give the residual stress or prestress conditions to simulate the stress profile of strengthened glass. Studied the effect of parameters such as length scale parameter and step size and the optimum parameters are selected. The experimental model of chemically strengthened glass is explained with analytical calculations to compute the stress intensity factor. Studied the effect of depth of the residual stress layer on the stress intensity factor. Stress intensity factor is calculated using the finite element analysis model and the results are compared with the experimental and analytical model.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Chemically Strengthening (CS) of glass through artificial process like ion-exchange has emerged as a leading technique to improve the fracture toughness of glass. In this study a novel finding with regards to fracture resistance has been presented. The stress intensity factor of CS glass with varying initial flaw depths have been measured using experimental, analytical and numerical simulations. The main focus in this thesis is modeling CS glass using finite element simulations with phase field fracture modeling. Through thorough investigation of the numerical, analytical and experimental results it has been observed that the fracture toughness of CS glass varies with factors like intial crack depth and the degree of chemical strengthening. A physics informed neural network (PINN) incorporates the physics of a system by satisfying its boundary value problem through a neural network's loss function. The PINN approach has shown great success in approximating the map between the solution of a partial differential equation (PDE) and its spatio-temporal input. However, for strongly non-linear and higher order partial differential equations PINN's accuracy reduces significantly. To resolve this problem, we propose a novel PINN scheme that solves the PDE sequentially over successive time segments using a single neural network. The key idea is to re-train the same neural network for solving the PDE over successive time segments while satisfying the already obtained solution for all previous time segments. Thus it is named as backward compatible PINN (bc-PINN). To illustrate the advantages of bc-PINN, we have used the Cahn Hilliard and Allen Cahn equations, which are widely used to describe phase separation and reaction diffusion systems. Our results show significant improvement in accuracy over the PINN method while using a smaller number of collocation points. Additionally, we have shown that using the phase space technique for a higher order PDE could further improve the accuracy and efficiency of the bc-PINN scheme.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The ion-exchange process creates a residual stress profile along the depth direction with compression near the two surfaces transitioning to tensile stress in the mid-depth. The existence of compressive stress near-surface helps mitigate the impact of pre-existing cracks on strength reduction. The key parameters used to define an ion-exchange residual stress profile are compressive stress (), depth of Layer (DOL), and central tension (). A theoretical model such as Green's theorem has been used to predict the best combination of residual stress profile parameters ( and DOL) to produce glass with optimal strength and high fracture toughness. This model is based on the hypothesis of crack geometry conservation, which assumes that the geometry (width and depth) of a pre-ion-exchange crack (pre-existing crack) remains constant post-ion-exchange. The objectives of this study are to investigate experimentally, for a chemically strengthened glass with various severity of initial cracks/notches, the relationship between the residual stress parameters (, DOL) and the resulting fracture resistance as a function of applied fracture stress/fracture toughness and compare with analytical model predictions. The effect of the residual stress on the geometry of pre-existing crack and its efficacy in mitigating crack initiation and resisting crack (pre-ion-exchange or post-ion-exchange) propagation was also investigated. The results show that for a given crack depth, the optimal fracture resistance for a chemically strengthened glass requires a proper combination of the chemical strengthening residual stress parameters. The present study establishes that, unlike glass, the fracture toughness of a chemically strengthened glass () is not a constant material parameter but depends on the initial crack/notch depth. It was observed that the geometry of a pre-existing crack (width and depth) changes following the ion-exchange process. It was also determined that for a similar sharp contact event, ion-exchange-induced residual stresses help minimize the initiation of new cracks, and it is more effective in preventing the propagation from those cracks introduced post-ion-exchange compared to those presented before the ion-exchange process. These findings provide a novel understanding of the fracture toughness improvement of chemically strengthened glass, which should facilitate their widespread engineering applications.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, language: English, abstract: This book introduces theoretical and practical aspects for modelling the impact fracture of glass and laminated glass using the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). The FDEM is a branch of the discrete element method (DEM), and combines finite element formulation into individual discrete elements. Thus, contact forces are evaluated more accurately. Regarding the fracture of glass, a Mode I-based smeared crack model is extended and employed in the FDEM, enabling crack initiation and propagation be captured naturally. Based on the employed method and the crack model, numerical examples on fracture of glass under both hard and soft impacts are presented and validated with data from computational and experimental sources. The combined finite-discrete element method is proven to be a reliable and robust tool for examining the impact fracture responses of glass.

Book excerpt: Phase-field models have already been proven to predict complex fracture patterns in two and three dimensions for brittle fracture at small strains. In this paper we discuss a model for phasefield fracture at finite deformations in more detail. Among the identification of crack location and projection of crack growth the numerical stability is one of the main challenges in solid mechanics. We here present a phase-field model at finite strains, which takes into account the anisotropy of damage by applying an anisotropic split and the modified invariants of the right Cauchy-Green strain tensor. We introduce a suitable weak notion of solution that also allows for a spatial and temporal discretization of the model. In this framework we study the existence of solutions and we show that the time-discrete solutions converge in a weak sense to a solution of the timecontinuous formulation of the model. Numerical examples in two and three space dimensions are carried out in the range of validity of the analytical results.

Book Synopsis The Variational Approach to Fracture by : Blaise Bourdin
Download or read book The Variational Approach to Fracture written by Blaise Bourdin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting original results from both theoretical and numerical viewpoints, this text offers a detailed discussion of the variational approach to brittle fracture. This approach views crack growth as the result of a competition between bulk and surface energy, treating crack evolution from its initiation all the way to the failure of a sample. The authors model crack initiation, crack path, and crack extension for arbitrary geometries and loads.
