Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phase Dependence in Radar Cross Section Measurements In the calibration model, where the radar cross section of the calibration target is known, the error signals can be removed from the measurements to obtain an accurate system calibration. When the radar cross section of the target is unknown, only error signals with a constant phase can be removed from the measurements. Error signals that vary in-phase with the theoretical signal Will introduce a bias that increases the uncertainty of the measurements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original campus of the University of Michigan was nearly a perfect square about a half-mile along a side. A street-sized walk, appropriately called the Diag, runs diagonally across this square, connecting its southeast and northwest corners. In 1904 a new engineering building was either started or finished (I do not remember which) to house classrooms. When another engineering building was built on the expanded campus across the street from it many years later, the old building came to be known as West Engine, to distinguish it from the new East Engine. Old West Engine is (or maybe by now, was) a four-story, L-shaped structure that stood at the southeast corner of the original campus. It was built with an arch in it to straddle the Diag at the apex of the L. You walked over the Engineering Arch to get from one leg of the L to the other if you were inside the building, and you walked under it when you entered the campus from the southeast corner. Affixed to the masonry wall of the arch was a plaque I often noted in passing. It bore a quote attributed to Horace Greeley (1811-1872), who I did not know at the time was the founder, editor, and publisher of the New York Tribune. It said, simply, Young man, when theory and practice differ, use your horse sense. The suggestion seems worthy of an exclamation point instead of a period, but I do not remember if it had one.

Book excerpt: The leading text and reference on radar cross section (RCS) theory and applications, this work presents a comparison of two radar signal strengths. One is the strength of the radar bean sweeping over a target, the other is the strength of the reflected echo senses by the receiver. This book shows how the RCS "gauge" can be predicted for theoretical objects.

Book excerpt: In this work, rigorous electromagnetic theory is used to determine the nose-on radar cross section of a perfectly conducting cone of finite height. The end cap of the cone is assumed to be a segment of a s spherical surface with center at the apex of the cone. Numerical results have been obtained for a cone having a total apex angle of 30 degrees and for values of [kappa alpha] ranging from 0.0259 to 5.18, where [kappa]=2 [pi]/[lambda] and [alpha] is the radius of the base of the cone. Siegel's Rayleigh method and by using Keller's modified geometrical optics as well as with experimental results obtained by Keys. The comparisons are instructive below [kappa alpha] = 3.2, the apparent upper limit of validity of the present results -- p.[3].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to capture recent advances and breakthroughs in in-home radar monitoring of human motions and activities. It addresses three key attributes of radar for in-door human monitoring, namely: motion classification including fall, detection of vital signs, and categorization of human gait for risk assessment and progression of physical impairments and disabilities. It explores recent developments in radar technology for human monitoring inside homes and residences. The reader will learn enhanced detection and classification techniques of radar signals associated with human micro- and macro-motions. Furthermore, the book includes examples using real data collected from healthy individuals, patients, and retirement communities based on the subject Doppler and range information, and using different single and multi-antenna radar system configurations. Results are also presented using modeled data based on biomechanics and kinematics. Indoor monitoring is further demonstrated using alternative technologies of infrared sensors and RF signals of opportunities.

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough description of classical electromagnetic radiation, starting from Maxwell's equations, and moving on to show how fundamental concepts are applied in a wide variety of examples from areas such as classical optics, antenna analysis, and electromagnetic scattering. Throughout, the author interweaves theoretical and experimental results to help give insight into the physical and historical foundations of the subject. A key feature of the book is that pulsed and time-harmonic signals are presented on an equal footing. Mathematical and physical explanations are enhanced by a wealth of illustrations (over 300), and the book includes more than 140 problems. It can be used as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in electrical engineering and physics, and will also be of interest to scientists and engineers working in applied electromagnetics. A solutions manual is available on request for lecturers adopting the text.
