Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology, Volume 3 covers papers dealing with various aspects of the ways in which drug effects are related to and perhaps modified by the rate of responding. The book discusses the behavioral actions of benzodiazepines and considers the extent to which these actions are consistent with the proposition that these effects are partially or entirely determined by control rates of responding. The text then describes rate-dependence and the effects of phenothiazine antipsychotics in pigeons; the rate-convergent effects of drugs; and the rate-dependent effects of extra stimuli, of drugs, and drug-state change. Historical, mathematical and alternative considerations in quantitation in behavioral pharmacology, as well as the history and status of rate-dependency investigations are also considered. The book then tackles the scope and limitations in the explanation and analysis of the behavioral effects of drugs; drug effects on behaviors maintained by different events; and the importance of identifying which of these factors contributes to the behavior studied in any given experiment. Pharmacologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and students taking these disciplines will find the book useful.

Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology has broadened its scope in an attempt to provide a better understanding of behavioral actions of drugs and their applied implications. Each volume will be increasingly thematic and successive volumes will cover a wider range of issues. Some publications in this series, such as the present volume 6, Neurobehavioral Pharmacology, will primarily explore relations between neurochemistry and related areas of neurobiology and behavioral pharmacology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first six volumes of the Handbook reviewed basic neuropharmacology, drawing on expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology and electrophysiology. The next three volumes focus attention on the functional importance of these basic neuropharmacological mechanisms for normal behavior. In order to study this interface in the intact functioning organism, appropriate methods for describing and quantifying behavior must be developed. The past twenty years have witnessed a revolution in the study of behavior which has taken us away from the often fruitless theoretical arguments to descriptive behaviorism. Technical achievements in the design of apparatus and the recording of behavior played an important role in these developments, and the resultant behavioral methods have been accepted and found useful in studying the effects of drugs. The development of psycho pharmacology as a discipline owes as much to these behavioral methods as it does to the basic neuropharmacological techniques pioneered for in vitra studies. In the first section of Volume 7, an effort has been made to provide reviews both of theory and practice in behavioral science. Milner's chapter deals with the concept of motivation in a theoretical framework. By contrast, the chapters by Morse et at. and Dews and DeWeese provide a more descriptive view of the various ways in which aversive stimuli control behavior and the importance of schedules of reinforcement in determining the profile of responding in the animal. The equal importance of observational behav ioral methods is well illustrated by Mackintosh et at.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral toxicology is a young discipline in the United States; so young, in fact, that this is one of its first books. Behavioral questions are bound to play a major role in future scientific work and governmental decisions involving the health effects of environmental contaminants and other chemicals. This role springs from two key problems that face scientists and public agencies required to set acceptable exposure standards or to determine criteria for the toxicity of therapeutic chemicals: How do you evaluate effects that may show up only as subtle functional disturbances? And how do you de tect toxic effects early enough so that they may still be reversible, before they produce major damage? The contributions in this book come from a collection of scientists whose interests span a wide variety of problem areas. The focus is largely on me thodological issues because they represent the most immediate concern of the discipline. We expect that this collection of papers will represent a useful source book for behavioral toxicology for some time. For the past few years, the University of Rochester's Department of Radiation Biology and Biophysics has sponsored a series of international conferences on chemical toxicity, partly as a response to concern over the con sequences to health of the rich chemical soup in which we live. This book is based upon presentations made to the fifth of the series. Held in June, 1972, it was the first formal meeting devoted to behavioral toxicology in this country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioural models in psychopharmacology are used for different purposes. The main concern of industrial psychopharmacologists is specifically to develop new and improved drugs for the treatment of mental disorders, while basic scientists use animal models to investigate the underlying nature of such conditions. The important distinction between these different perspectives is made explicit for the first time in this book. By considering such conditions as anxiety, depression, mania and schizophrenia, feeding disorders, dementia, and drug dependence, this book provides a comprehensive and critical review of the adequacy of the behavioural procedures used by psychopharmacologists to model psychiatric disorders. Graduate students and research workers in pscyhopharmacology, from both academic and industrial spheres, as well as clinicians, will find this book of considerable interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is being published at a time when opioid receptors have recently been cloned. The structural characteristics of opioid receptors and the recent advances in their molecular cloning and expression are explicated. Connecting these cloned opioid receptors with the pharmacology of opioid receptor actions is of particular importance. The use of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides to opioid receptors to elucidate the neural mechanisms of opioid action is detailed. As analgesia is one of the most important clinical functions for opioids and opioid peptides, this book concentrates on the detailed mechanisms of action of opioids and opioid peptides for the production of analgesia. The significant pharmacologic actions of opioids and opioid peptides in gastrointestinal function, immune function, cardiovascular and respiratory regulation, addiction and the cellular mechanisms involved in tolerance and dependence of opioids are also described. The book will be of interest both to researchers investigating the neural mechanisms of the pharmacologic and physiologic functions of the endogenous opioid system and to clinicians who are involved in pain management and assessment.
