Book excerpt: Now, in one volume, the latest research from the areas of molcular biology, neurochemistry and behavior analysis of drug abuse and dependence, with, wherever possible, an integration of the data from these various levels of analysis. The ensuing reports point to the complexity of the phenomenon of abuse and dependence and clearly demonstrate that it is determined by a variety of variables from molecular biology and genetics through behavioral history. This complexity is shown, however, to be responsive to rigorous scientific analysis and our success to date gives rise to hope that this distressing public health problem can ultimately be brought under control. Each of the chapters is written by a leading researcher in the field.

Book excerpt: The Pharmacological and Epidemiological Aspects of Adolescent Drug Dependence is a collection of proceedings presented at the International Symposium on the Pharmacological and Epidemiological Aspects of Adolescent Drug Dependence, held in London on September 1-2, 1966 under the auspices of the Society for the Study of Addiction to Alcohol and Other Drugs. The symposium provided a forum for discussing the pharmacological and epidemiological aspects of drug dependence in adolescents. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the chemistry and pharmacology of narcotic drugs in adolescence, as well as narcotic addiction in young people in the United States. The discussion then turns to pharmacology and clinical observations on stimulant drugs and hallucinogenic drugs; the epidemiology and social pharmacology of drugs of dependence; and features of adolescent drug dependence. Regulations aimed at controlling drugs of dependence are also analyzed in relation to the national incidence of adolescent dependence in certain countries such as Britain, Belgium, Israel, and the Netherlands. The remaining chapters focus on the language, evidence, and patterns of drug abuse, together with research in relation to drugs of dependence. This book will be of interest to pharmacologists, epidemiologists, and policymakers concerned with drug dependence.

Pathways of Addiction meets the need for a clear and thoughtful national research agenda that will yield the greatest benefit from today's limited resources. The committee makes its recommendations within the public health framework and incorporates diverse fields of inquiry and a range of policy positions. It examines both the demand and supply aspects of drug abuse. Pathways of Addiction offers a fact-filled, highly readable examination of drug abuse issues in the United States, describing findings and outlining research needs in the areas of behavioral and neurobiological foundations of drug abuse. The book covers the epidemiology and etiology of drug abuse and discusses several of its most troubling health and social consequences, including HIV, violence, and harm to children. Pathways of Addiction looks at the efficacy of different prevention interventions and the many advances that have been made in treatment research in the past 20 years. The book also examines drug treatment in the criminal justice setting and the effectiveness of drug treatment under managed care. The committee advocates systematic study of the laws by which the nation attempts to control drug use and identifies the research questions most germane to public policy. Pathways of Addiction provides a strategic outline for wise investment of the nation's research resources in drug abuse. This comprehensive and accessible volume will have widespread relevanceâ€"to policymakers, researchers, research administrators, foundation decisionmakers, healthcare professionals, faculty and students, and concerned individuals.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive text on the pharmacological, medical, and legal aspects of drug abuse has been thoroughly updated for the Fourth Edition, and a new chapter on club drugs added. The chapter on medical effects was completely rewritten to focus on infections that develop in i.v. drug abusers, and information on the international regulation of drug use was added to the chapter on drug abuse and the law. The book is written at a level appropriate for upper level undergraduate students, graduate or medical students, and drug counselors. All major drugs of abuse are covered: tobacco, opioids, central stimulants (including cocaine, amphetamine, and caffeine), alcohol and other sedatives, marijuana, club drugs (MDMA, GHB, and ketamine), hallucinogens, and volatile solvents. For each type the authors discuss history and culture, the characteristic patterns of use, subjective and physiological effects, mechanisms of pharmacological action, and toxic effects. Epidemiological aspects are discussed as well as pharmacological treatment possibilities where applicable.

The range is wide and the depth considerable for all the topics covered in the treatment of this timely and relevant subject. This book may serve equally well as a general introduction and a scholarly reference. Ultimately, it is designed to serve those patients suffering from abuse of and addiction to drugs and alcohol. The content and organization of the book flow from general concepts of abuse and addiction to specific details of the pharmacology of alcohol and drugs. Special chapters on topics not found in most other books, such as pharmacology of drug-drug interactions, abstinence, and prevention, are included. This book is written especially for the clinician interested in the pharma cology of alcohol and drugs of abuse and addiction. The pharmacology is integrated into a conceptual approach to diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse and addiction. The form and style are didactic, critical as well as straightforward in presentation. Literature references from recent clinical research and basic research provide the foundation for the chapters throughout the book. Be cause the book is written by a clinician-researcher, the information is readily adaptable to clinical problems and research ideas. I would like to express my deep appreciation to Susan Newsom and Darlene Tucci for their invaluable technical assistance. Norman S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New and improved therapies to treat and protect against drug dependence and abuse are urgently needed. In the United States alone about 50 million people regularly smoke tobacco and another 5 million are addicted to other drugs. In a given year, millions of these individuals attemptâ€"with or without medical assistanceâ€"to quit using drugs, though relapse remains the norm. Furthermore, each year several million teenagers start smoking and nearly as many take illicit drugs for the first time. Research is advancing on promising new means of treating drug addiction using immunotherapies and sustained-release (depot) medications. The aim of this research is to develop medications that can block or significantly attenuate the psychoactive effects of such drugs as cocaine, nicotine, heroin, phencyclidine, and methamphetamine for weeks or months at a time. This represents a fundamentally new therapeutic approach that shows promise for treating drug addiction problems that were difficult to treat in the past. Despite their potential benefits, however, several characteristics of these new methods pose distinct behavioral, ethical, legal, and social challenges that require careful scrutiny. Such issues can be considered unique aspects of safety and efficacy that are fundamentally related to the distinct nature and properties of these new types of medications.

This book also includes chapters on alternative models and examples of when you should use these alternatives. Case histories are provided at the end of the book to show how the data generated from the animal models play a pivitol role in the submission package for a new drug. By incorporating all of this information into one book, Nonclinical Assessment of Abuse Potential for New Pharmaceuticals is your single resource for everything you need to know to understand and implement the assessment of abuse liability. Provides a consolidated overview of the complex regulatory landscape Offers best practice methodology for conducting animal studies, including selection of doses and positive control agents that will help you improve your own abuse potential studies Includes real-life examples to illustrate how nonclinical data fit into the submission strategy
