This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Bartolomeo Scala has long intrigued historians, he is a figure whose importance has only recently been appreciated. In Alison Brown's biography Scala emerges as a man of more ability and character than anyone has imagined him to be. We begin to understand why he was employed as chancellor for the almost unrivaled period of thirty-two years. Ms. Brown's study is not only the first extensive treatment of Scala's life but also a significant contribution to our knowledge of Italian Renaissance history and of the contrast between theory and practice in Medicean government. Book Synopsis Cultural Crossroads in the Ancient Novel by : Marília P. Futre Pinheiro
Download or read book Cultural Crossroads in the Ancient Novel written by Marília P. Futre Pinheiro and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protagonists of the ancient novels wandered or were carried off to distant lands, from Italy in the west to Persia in the east and Ethiopia in the south; the authors themselves came, or pretended to come, from remote places such as Aphrodisia and Phoenicia; and the novelistic form had antecedents in a host of classical genres. These intersections are explored in this volume. Papers in the first section discuss “mapping the world in the novels.” The second part looks at the dialogical imagination, and the conversation between fiction and history in the novels. Section 3 looks at the way ancient fiction has been transmitted and received. Space, as the locus of cultural interaction and exchange, is the topic of the fourth part. The fifth and final section is devoted to character and emotion, and how these are perceived or constructed in ancient fiction. Overall, a rich picture is offered of the many spatial and cultural dimensions in a variety of ancient fictional genres.

Book Synopsis The Novel in the Ancient World by : Gareth L. Schmeling
Download or read book The Novel in the Ancient World written by Gareth L. Schmeling and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classics and history to Jewish rabbinic narratives and the canonical and noncanonical gospels of earliest Christianity, the relevance of studying the novel of the later classical periods of Greek and Rome is widely endorsed. Ancient novels contain insights beyond literary theories and philosophical musings to new sources for understanding the popular culture of antiquity. Some scholars, in fact, refer to ancient novels as “alternative histories,” for they tell history implicitly rather than with the intentional biases of the historian. The Novel in the Ancient World surveys the new approaches and insights to the ancient novel and wrestles with issues such as the development, transformation, and christianization of the novel (Spirit-inspired versus inspired by the Muses). Book Synopsis A History of Roman Literature (2 vols.) by : M. von Albrecht
Download or read book A History of Roman Literature (2 vols.) written by M. von Albrecht and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 1864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael von Albrecht's A History of Roman Literature, originally published in German, can rightly be seen as the long awaited counterpart to Albin Lesky's Geschichte der Griechischen Literatur. In what will probably be the last survey made by a single scholar the whole of Latin literature from Livius Andronicus up to Boethius comes to the fore. 'Literature' is taken here in its broad, antique sense, and therefore also includes e.g. rhetoric, philosophy and history. Special attention has been given to the influence of Latin literature on subsequent centuries down to our own days. Extensive indices give access to this monument of learning. The introductions in Von Albrecht's texts, together with the large bibliographies make further study both more fruitful and easy.
