Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to address the need for information on the petrochemical industry in Asia in view of the fast-evolving situation of the industry in the region and the growing involvement of the World Bank with operations and studies in a number of Asian countries. The report reviews the current trends of the industry with relevance for Asian-based producers and documents the substantial increases in activity and rates of growth of the sector in Asia. A substantial part of the analysis is dedicated to the assessment of competitive advantages in the production of petrochemicals by individual producers. The study also review the policy framework in all countries selected and compares the different economic instruments and other policy tools that have been used to develop their industries. The report concludes that prospects for future development of the industry in developing Asia are generally favorable. As a caveat, the optimistic outlook hinges on the prospects for continuous economic growth and the oil supply and pricing situation. To secure their competitive position and materialize the growth prospects, countries with a lower competitive posture must move to improve their economics of manufacture through feedstock diversification, vertical integration, restructuring increased exposure to competition and improved long-term planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The petrochemical sector is in the aftermath of extensive restructuring. This change has altered the current situation of the industry and its outlook. It has also forced the producers, users, and financing institutions to design new strategies, adapt to these changes and prepare for the future. The purpose of this document is to shed light on the current and expected developments in the world market for petrochemicals. It also attempts to identify the geographic areas and fields of activity where new investments are more likely, useful and most efficiently utilized. The document is divided into four parts dealing with: (a) the identified global trends in the petrochemical sector; (b) a description of the current world situation; (c) a regional supply/demand analysis of the current situation and forecast to the year 1995; and (d) a brief analysis regarding potential actions and investments in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No region in the world has seen so much development activity in the last ten years as the Gulf area. Since ‘black gold’ catapulted the oil-producing countries into the limelight of the international political and economic scene, there has been a proliferation of studies on the larger exporting states. However, many of the so-called ‘small countries’ have been neglected in this exercise. This book presents the first detailed examination of the bases and extent of economic development in Qatar and considers the need to translate the petroleum-generated growth into viable, self-sustained development. Qatar, though not one of the oil ‘giants’, was first in the field of oil development and exhibits a number of special features not shared by its Gulf neighbours: for example in pre-oil boom days it was already in advance of many other Gulf states in the field of education; it has a modest agriculture sector and there is a comparatively strong attachment to the land; and finally it has played an important role in OPEC as a member of the ‘moderate price’ camp. The individual chapters trace the development of the oil industry, outline public financing and economic policy and sketch the issues involved in industrialisation, absorptive capacity and agricultural development. Examination is made of the social and physical infrastructure as well as money and banking, and the international linkages in trade, foreign aid, economic cooperation efforts and investment opportunities are elucidated. Planners in Qatar know that their revenue base in petroleum is finite, and thus investment of present surplus needs careful planning. The book therefore also outlines current government priorities and suggests areas for future investments. First published in 1979.

Book excerpt: The development of Nigeria's oil industry is examined comprehensively in this book, originally published in 1984. It charts the changing course of her economy and examines the dramatic effect oil has had on Nigeria's domestic and international policies. Oil has enabled her to command a powerful position in African affairs and within OPEC itself, but at the same time, has held back other forms of economic development. Nigeria's future in the oil industry, as well as in related fields such as gas, is assessed both in the light of her former policies and in the changing world economy. This book will be of interest to all concerned in the oil industry, international finance or world power politics.

This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded plastics are also known as foamed plastics or cellular plastics. Expanded plastics can be flexible, semi flexible, semi rigid or rigid. They can also be thermoplastic or thermosetting and can exist as open celled or closed celled materials. Expanded plastics may be prepared from most synthetic and many natural polymers. Most of the industrially important ones are made from polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethanes and polyethylene, as well as from resins that derive from phenol, epoxy, etc. Polyurethane (PUR and PU) is polymer composed of a chain of organic units joined by carbamate (urethane) links. Polyurethane polymers are formed by combining two bi or higher functional monomers. One contains two or more isocyanate functional groups and the other contains two or more hydroxyl groups. More complicated monomers are also used. The Polyurethanes are among the most recent additions to the many commercially important classes of polymers. Urethanes can be considered esters of the unstable carbamics acid or amide esters of carbonic acid. A polyamide is a polymer containing monomers of amides joined by peptide bonds. They can occur both naturally and artificially, examples being proteins, such as wool and silk, and can be made artificially through step growth polymerization or solid phase synthesis. Polyamides are commonly used in textiles, automotives, carpet and sportswear due to their extreme durability and strength. Polyester is a category of polymers which contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Natural polyesters and a few synthetic ones are biodegradable, but most synthetic polyesters are not. Polyester fibres are produced by the melt spinning process. Raw materials are heated to a spinning mass, which is then pressed through spinnerets. Manufacturing techniques are now developed to the point where they can produce fibres adapted to suit the widest possible applications: they can have round, oval or angular profiles, making them firm to the touch. Applications of these polymers are in various fields like rubber industry, textile industry, chemical industries etc. Some of the fundamentals of the book are epoxy curing system, background, process conditions, polyether polyols with epoxy resins, highlights of the technological achievement, laminates comprising a hard foam layer and a fiber reinforced synthetic resin layer, highlights of the technological achievement, process conditions, plastic deformation, modification of amino polyols with epoxy resins, producing expanded and cured polyester resin, foamed unsaturated polyester resins with gel coat, cross linked polyester, unsaturated polyester compositions with high impact strength, foam crystallization of condensation polymers, acrylate rubber modification of aromatic polyesters etc. The present book covers processes of expanded plastics, polyurethane, polyamides with other related information required by an entrepreneur. This book is very useful for technocrats, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals.
