Since this seminal paper, nets have been applied in various areas, at the same time being modified and theoretically investigated. In recent time, computer scientists are taking a broader interest in net theory. The main concern of this book is the presentation of those parts of net theory which can serve as a basis for practical application. It introduces the basic net theoretical concepts and ways of thinking, motivates them by means of examples and derives relations between them. Some extended examples il lustrate the method of application of nets. A major emphasis is devoted to those aspect which distinguish nets from other system models. These are for instance, the role of concurrency, an awareness of the finiteness of resources, and the pos sibility of using the same representation technique of different levels of ab straction. On completing this book the reader should have achieved a system atic grounding in the subject allowing him access to the net literature [25]. These objectives determined the subjects treated here. The presentation of the material here is rather more axiomatic than in ductive. We start with the basic notions of 'condition' and 'event' and the con cept of the change of states by (concurrently) occurring events. By generali zation of these notions a part of the theory of nets is presented.

The present monograph augments this literature by offering a mathematical treatment of one of the central aspects of net theory: the modelling of concur rency by partially ordered sets. Occurrence nets - which are special nets as well as special partial orders - are proposed by net theory for this purpose. We study both the general properties of occurrence nets and their use in describing the concurrent behaviour of systems. Occurrence nets may be contrasted with a more language-oriented approach to the modelling of concurrency known as arbitrary interleaving. We will dis cuss some connections between these' two approaches. Other approaches based on partially ordered sets - such as the theory of traces, the theory of event structures and the theory of semi words - are not considered in this book, in spite of the strong links between them and net theory.

Once assured that the system behaves correctly, it is also important that it is efficient in that its running cost is minimal or that it executes in optimum time or whatever performance measure is chosen. While functional correctness is taken for granted, the latter quantitative properties will often decide the success, or otherwise, of the system. Ideally the developer must be able to specify, design and implement his system and test it for both functional correctness and performance using only one for malism. No such formalism exists as yet. In recent years the graphical version of the Specification and Description Language (SDL) has become very popular for the specification, design and partial implementation of discrete systems. The ability to test for functional correctness of systems specified in SDL is, however, limited to time consuming simulative executions of the specification and perfor mance analysis is not directly possible. Petri nets, although graphical in format are somewhat tedious for specifying large complex systems but, on the other hand were developed exactly to test discrete, distributed systems for functional correctness. With a Petri net specification one can test, e. g. , for deadlock, live ness and boundedness of the specified system.
