Phillips' 'A Guide to Peterborough Cathedral' provides readers with a comprehensive history of the monastery from its founding, as well as a detailed account of its architectural features. The cathedral, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and Saint Andrew, boasts a stunning Early English Gothic West Front with three enormous arches, which is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. Despite extensions and restoration, the cathedral has remained largely intact and is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England.
Book Synopsis A Medieval Book of Magical Stones: The Peterborough Lapidary by : Francis Young
Download or read book A Medieval Book of Magical Stones: The Peterborough Lapidary written by Francis Young and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Medieval Book of Magical Stones is the first translation of the longest and most comprehensive medieval English treatise on the occult powers of stones and gems, the Peterborough Lapidary. Lapidaries (encyclopaedias of the 'virtues' of stones and minerals) were an essential resource for practitioners of natural and ritual magic as well as medicine. This late fifteenth-century manuscript from the library of Peterborough Cathedral describes 145 stones, portraying them as living beings whose properties range from giving the bearer the power to command spirits and foretell the future to healing numerous illnesses and communicating with spirits and the dead, along with instructions on how to release latent occult power from within stones. Many of the proposed uses of stones resemble the concerns of medieval necromancers, such as invisibility, love magic, power over animals and the creation of magical mirrors. pp. xliii+106; 2 column text; introduction; bibliography; analytical index; 8 b/w illustrations

Book Synopsis Exeter Cathedral by : Jonathan Foyle
Download or read book Exeter Cathedral written by Jonathan Foyle and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new publication, illustrated with specially commissioned photography, draws on archaeology, archives and imagery to illuminate the fascinating history of Exeter Cathedral. Nine hundred years ago, foundations were dug for a great church in Exeter which would develop into the beautiful cathedral that still marks the heart of the city. It is distinctive among English cathedrals for its twin transept towers, and unbroken vault stretching from the entrance to the high altar, and the sheer profusion of carving of plants and animals throughout. Exeter is a heavenly garden in stone, and this new book, illustrated with specially commissioned photography, draws on archaeology, archives and imagery to explain what its builders in a surprisingly cosmopolitan city were trying to tell us about their understanding of the world, and the realm they envisioned beyond us.

Book Synopsis The Wise Master Builder: Platonic Geometry in Plans of Medieval Abbeys and Cathederals by : Nigel Hiscock
Download or read book The Wise Master Builder: Platonic Geometry in Plans of Medieval Abbeys and Cathederals written by Nigel Hiscock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Did the plan of medieval churches have any underlying symbolic meaning? This work re-opens the debate about the importance of geometry and symbolism in medieval architectural design and argues the case for attributing an intellectual meaning to the planning of abbeys and cathedrals. In challenging prevailing claims for the use of arithmetical rations in architectural design, notably those based on the square root of two, Dr Hiscock advances a perspective consisting of proportions derived from the figures of Platonic geometry - the square, the equilateral triangle and the pentagon - and provides evidence for the symbolic interpretation of these figures. The investigation further reveals whole series of geometric relationships between some of England's most celebrated Norman cathedrals, such as Norwich or Durham, together with a wide sample from the Continent, from Old St Peter's in Rome to Chartres Cathedral, and sets out a comprehensive design method in each case. Hiscock first demonstrates the proposition that the ideas of Christian Platonism, including number and geometry, remained current and were employed in the thought of the early Middle Ages. In particular, he argues that they can be associated with the leading persons in the 10th-century revival of monasticism and that they found expression in the "white mantle of churches" that spread across Western Europe at the end of the first millennium AD. The book then provides a detailed analysis of the geometric proportions of church plans between the 9th and 12th centuries in Germany, France and in England. This research seeks to demonstrate that a coherent sequence of geometric forms can be seen in thse plans, forms which correspond to the key figures of Platonic geometry as understood in the context of Christian Platonist thought. In conclusion, the author shows how the system of design proposed could be set out on site using the known working methods of medieval masons.
