This book was released on 1966 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flutter boundaries obtained from recent experiments on the supersonic flutter of circular cylindrical shells are compared with various theoretical predictions. Following Voss, a model analysis is used in conjunction with different aerodynamic approximations - namely, piston theory and the potential solution of Leonard and Hedgepeth. It was found that the pressurized cylindrical shells fluttered at a lower level of free stream energy than predicted by the theory. Of the two results, that using piston theory appears to correspond closest to the experiment. The influence of the viscous boundary layer on cylindrical shell flutter is reexamined. The boundary layer is modeled by a parallel shear flow, and the oscillating shell surface is approximated by an oscillating plane wall whose deflection is sinusoidal in both in-plane directions. Viscous effects are neglected with respect to flow perturbation quantities, nonlinear terms are neglected, and the final equations are integrated numerically through the boundary layer. It was found that, for the thicknesses of boundary layer present in the experiments, the resulting pressures on the oscillating wall are reasonably close to the corresponding potential theory ones. Hence, in that sense, the influence of the boundary layer appears to be negligible for shell flutter with many circumferential waves. (Author).

Book excerpt: A theoretical study was made on the panel flutter characteristics of a ring and longeron stiffened circular cylindrical shell at high supersonic Mach numbers. This study is an extension of an earlier program and uses the cyclic reduction procedure developed there to simplify the flutter analysis. This actual reduction procedure has been included in this report for completeness. An improved modal analysis was employed in this study which leads to an increased understanding of the flutter behavior of such complex structures at the high supersonic Mach numbers. A method for extending the above analysis to the lower supersonic Mach numbers is also discussed. An investigation of the aerodynamic pressures on cylindrical shells in unsteady supersonic potential flow has also been carried out. A general solution for these aerodynamic pressures was obtained which is valid at both the high and low supersonic Mach numbers. The general solution was expressed in terms of Randall functions by reducing the unsteady flow problem to an equivalent steady flow problem through an appropriate transformation. Certain limiting cases of this general solution are presented along with their well-known flat plate counterparts. Finally, an analytical approximation is developed for the Randall functions which would be useful in a cylindrical shell panel flutter analysis. (Author).

This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book explores both theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear vibrations and stability of shells and plates. It is ideal for researchers, professionals, students, and instructors. Expert researchers will find the most recent progresses in nonlinear vibrations and stability of shells and plates, including advanced problems of shells with fluid-structure interaction. Professionals will find many practical concepts, diagrams, and numerical results, useful for the design of shells and plates made of traditional and advanced materials. They will be able to understand complex phenomena such as dynamic instability, bifurcations, and chaos, without needing an extensive mathematical background. Graduate students will find (i) a complete text on nonlinear mechanics of shells and plates, collecting almost all the available theories in a simple form, (ii) an introduction to nonlinear dynamics, and (iii) the state of art on the nonlinear vibrations and stability of shells and plates, including fluid-structure interaction problems.
Book Synopsis Aeroelastic Vibrations and Stability of Plates and Shells by : Sergey D. Algazin
Download or read book Aeroelastic Vibrations and Stability of Plates and Shells written by Sergey D. Algazin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back-action of aerodynamics onto structures such as wings cause vibrations and may resonantly couple to them, thus causing instabilities (flutter) and endangering the whole structure. By careful choices of geometry, materials and damping mechanisms, hazardous effects on wind engines, planes, turbines and cars can be avoided. Besides an introduction into the problem of flutter, new formulations of flutter problems are given as well as a treatise of supersonic flutter and of a whole range of mechanical effects. Numerical and analytical methods to study them are developed and applied to the analysis of new classes of flutter problems for plates and shallow shells of arbitrary plane form. Specific problems discussed in the book in the context of numerical simulations are supplemented by Fortran code examples (available on the website).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation "Structural Dynamics in Aeronautical Engineering is a comprehensive introduction to the modern methods of dynamic analysis of aeronautical structures. The text represents carefully developed course materials, beginning with an introductory chapter on matrix algebra and methods for numerical computations, followed by a series of chapters discussing specific aeronautical applications. In this way, the student can be guided from the simple concept of a single-degree-of-freedom structural system to the more complex multidegree-of-freedom and continuous systems, including random vibrations, nonlinear systems, and aeroelastic phenomena. Among the various examples used in the text, the chapter on aeroelasticity of flight vehicles is particularly noteworthy with its clear presentation of the phenomena and its mathematical formulation for structural and aerodynamic loads.

Download or read book On the Nonlinear Free Vibrations of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells written by J. Mayers and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the influence of higher-order and nonlinear effects on the free vibration behavior of thin circular cylindrical shells. A recent solution utilizing the Karman-Donnell strain-displacement relations is examined and criticized. A new solution is carried out which removes the basis for criticism and discloses the existence of a nonperiodic vibration behavior, a phenomenon heretofore unknown. Further, solutions are obtained employing the strain-displacement relations deduced by Sanders and applied, in an appropriately modified manner, by Mayers and Rehfield to the shell postbuckling problem. The effect of the improved strain-displacement relations in predicting the vibration behavior, attendant to a modal shape possessing a small number of circumferential waves, is assessed and recommendations are made for directing future effort on the problem. Book Synopsis Supersonic Flutter of Circular Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Internal Pressure and Axial Compression by : Mervyn D. Olson
Download or read book Supersonic Flutter of Circular Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Internal Pressure and Axial Compression written by Mervyn D. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of recent experiments on the flutter of circular cylindrical shells in the Mach number range 2.5-3.5 are presented. Three shells with radius-to-thickness ratios of 2000 were subjected to radial external pressure loadings and to combinations of axial compressive loading and internal pressurization while in the presence of an external axiallydirected supersonic flow. Small amounts of internal pressurization were very stabilizing with respect to flutter, but moderate amounts reduced stability to the unpressurized level. However, high internal pressures completely stabilized the shells. The axial compressive loading was slightly destabilizing for moderate amounts of internal pressurization. There was no apparent danger of destruction of models even for the most violent flutter conditions which occurred just prior to buckling under radial external pressure loading and just after buckling under axial compressive loading. Buckled portions of a shell did not flutter. It appears that the large local curvatures encountered in the buckling of a cylindrical shell have a marked stabilizing effect on the shell locally. However, it also appears that the localized buckling usually encountered in practice significantly reduces the stability of any unbuckled regions of the shell. (Author).
