Book excerpt: "Stretching from the ocean to the eastern hills, the Perth Region has coastal landscapes, river-valley landscapes, and forested hilly landscapes that reflect the diverse geology beneath. This field guide covers some of the classic geological localities near Perth - for instance Cape Peron has preserved evidence for sea-level changes that have featured in scientific discussions for over 50 years. The guide describes the landscape and rocks and gives explanations on how they formed. Close-up photos and diagrams help the reader recognize and interpret the localities." - back cover.

Book excerpt: SOCIAL FORECASTING, FUTUROLOGY. AUSTRALIAN. Perth, a city of 1.5 million relatively complacent people, is changing at a phenomenal rate. Latest predictions are that the city will grow from 1.5 million people to 4.2 million by 2056. To meet this increase the entire city and its infrastructure needs to double in the next 4 decades. This will have huge consequences for the culture and ecology of the city: Perths long term survival is at stake. The book is designed to help the community visualize the results of planning decisions and get everyone involved in the debate about how the city should grow. This is an important and timely book for Perth, but it also presents a model piece of research that could be emulated in any city experiencing rapid change.

Book excerpt: In this book, Dr Cole Hendrigan examines the options for sustainable transport and land-use planning based on building heights, mixes of land-use, transportation mode capacity and others to build the next generation of parks, housing, commercial and retail spaces along high-capacity rail corridors. Following the paradigm of ‘Transit Oriented Development’, Dr Hendrigan provides unique knowledge and insights on how to best make the transition towards more sustainable and livable cities, offering a practical method to better integrate transport and urban development to this end.

This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are usually located in complex landscapes. Multiple ecosystem services delivered by wetlands to human well-being should be considered in broader contexts of wetland functions, water quality, water resource management and wetland conservation. Natural wetlands are 'kidneys' and 'sponges' of the earth that remove water pollutants and provide hydrological regulation functions vital to the environment. Where the functions of the wetlands are weakened, actions of rehabilitations are needed to revitalize those functions. While worldwide many natural wetlands have disappeared due to climate change and/or human activities, constructed wetlands, which may be seen as 'artificial kidneys/sponges' of the earth, have been increasingly built to replicate the functions of the natural wetlands. This Research Topic aims to collect and present the latest research developments in natural and constructed wetlands in relation to either water resource functions or water quality. Articles published in this Research Topic will showcase new understandings of water balances and flow patterns, vegetation characteristics, and pollutant transformations in wetland systems; innovative designs and efficiencies of wastewater treatment wetlands; and technologies that revitalize the ecosystem functions of natural wetlands. These articles are expected to bring benefits to research communities, water and wastewater industries, and government agencies that deal with wetland water management and conservation. High-quality Original Research and Review articles in this field are all welcome for submission to this Research Topic. Research interests include but are not limited to the following areas: 1. Water balances and flow patterns in natural wetland systems. 2. The hydrological regulation functions and importance of natural wetlands in their environmental context. 3. Vegetation characteristics of natural wetlands and their functional importance in wetland water pollution control. 4. Techniques for the rehabilitation of degraded wetlands. 5. The role of constructed wetlands in wastewater treatment. 6. Innovative designs and efficiencies of wastewater treatment wetlands. 7. The modeling of hydrological and/or pollutant dynamics in wetland systems. 8. The ecohydrology of wetlands. 9. The role of wetlands in the global carbon cycle. 10. Impacts of climate change and human activities on wetland hydrology and water resources. Recognizing that hydrological and biogeochemical processes are basically coupled in wetlands and their landscapes, manuscripts that report their interactions are particularly welcome.

It highlights the complex and diversified nature of agricultural change in these contexts, and the ways in which this shapes patterns of economic and social development. Globalisation, Agriculture and Development shows that while agriculture continues to play an important role in local, regional and national development, both the industry and the communities it supports are facing an increasing number of economic, social and environmental challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Winner of the Educational Award by the World Safety Organization Contractor safety management is often seen as nothing more than a subset of general safety management in that no special consideration needs to be given to understanding the difficulties of the contract environment. This leaves contractors endlessly juggling competing and sometimes contradictory demands made by the principal in the name of safety and health. Instead of managing the work in accordance with the contract and the agreed health and safety management plan, contractors find themselves having to cope with moveable, ever-changing expectations about the way that health and safety is supposed to be managed. Contractor Safety Management explores how the contracting–principal relationship can influence safety outcomes and how a principal's role in "overseeing" the safety performance of its contractors is different from managing safety in its own organization. It brings together perspectives from different disciplines including legal, health and safety management, operational, and contract and procurement management. The editor and chapter authors examine real-life cases, the issues that they present, and the way that safety management was handled. By sharing lessons across disciplines, the book identifies critical issues in contractor safety management and raises awareness of its complexity and importance. It provides wide-ranging and comprehensive insight into the concerns confronting organizations, managers, and safety managers in contracting relationships. Offering guidance on how critical issues might be addressed, the book uses real-life cases to draw conclusions from successes and failures that can guide future contracting strategies for effectively controlling health and safety risks in a contracting environment.
