Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks a radical and powerful intervention in traditional arguments about pornography. Kappeler re-examines the artistic distinctions between fantasy and reality, pornography and erotica, and challenges the legal definition of obscenity as well as the intellectual defence of 'freedom of expression'. By linking images of actual violence with the imaginative portrayal of women in the realm of the aesthetic, she establishes vital connections between modes of representation and social forms of power and domination. It is essential reading for anyone concerned with issues of pornography and sexual politics and related debates in literary criticism and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unabashed defense of pornography from a utilitarian-hedonist perspective, philosopher Alan Soble strongly rebuts both feminist and conservative critics. Soble demonstrates that neither conservative nor feminist critics of pornography show much acquaintance with the genre they criticize. This suggests that purely political motives underlie their critiques instead of reasoned, objective arguments based on thorough empirical research.Soble also faults critics of pornography for their failure of empathy: they refuse to see pornographic images from the various perspectives of their viewers. In approaching these images literally, detractors promulgate the worst possible interpretation of pornography. Further, they do not do justice to the social and psychological research about pornography and its purported harms. Conservatives and feminists manufacture their case against pornography and its consumers based on oversimplified interpretations of the images and a poor understanding of scientific studies. This sardonic and well-reasoned critique of feminist and conservative moral outrage over pornography is sure to be controversial.

Book excerpt: In this uncompromising volume, Diana E Russell examines the relationships between pornography, misogyny and rape, and contends that these relationships are indeed dangerous to women. After defining pornography and considering the various types of pornographic material available, the author demonstrates that hatred of women is a predominant aspect of pornography, and that racist undercurrents are often exploited in visual pornography of all types. She then provides a rich body of statistical evidence that supports the argument that pornography is a cause of rape.

Book excerpt: Pornography has fascinated and divided researchers, policymakers, and the public for years. Does it have harmful effects on individuals? What effects in particular? Does pornography influence everyone or just some people? How should society deal with the results of this influence? In Pornography, Linz and Malamuth sort through these and other questions by placing their topic within the broader context of fundamental human nature theories. Their approach reveals a systematic interweaving of social science, morality, and law through three different perspectives: conservative-moralistic, liberal, and feminist. The fifth volume in the innovative Communication Concepts series, this book is an invaluable addition to current research on pornography and obscenity. Students and professionals in communication studies as well as research methods and the social sciences in general will find Pornography to be an illuminating and compelling study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study presented in this book is a corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis of pornography. In its critical spirit, it focuses on the socially contested question whether pornography makes its consumers objectify humans and in particular women in their thinking. Objectification is divided into fragmentation (reducing people to their body parts), physicalization and visualization (conceptualizing people primarily in terms of physical and visual features), desubjectification (ignoring some people's perspectives), and passivization (thinking of people as passive participants in events). To study objectification, the study - in its discourse analytical orientation - qualitatively and quantitatively analyses a corpus of pornographic short stories (partly in comparison with a corpus of erotica). It concentrates on linguistic details supposed to contribute to the creation and maintenance of the four conceptualizations mentioned, e.g. the frequencies and lexical variation of lexemes for body parts (fragmentation) and of adjectival and nominal descriptors (physicalization and visualization), thematic elements (desubjectification), or semantic role patterns in verbs for intercourse (passivization). The conclusion of the analyses is that pornography can be considered to objectify women in the sense of fragmenting, passivizing and physicalizing and visualizing them. Apart from passivization, the differences between women and men, however, are not extreme, suggesting that objectification extends to men, even though in a patriarchal culture, the discriminatory social effects will apply more severely to women than to men. As for desubjectification, denying women their subjectivity does not seem to be an essential component of pornography's objectification. The study does not only add a valuable perspective to the ongoing debate on the effects of pornography, but in combining the usually qualitatively-oriented views of Critical Discourse Analysis with the quantitative methods of corpus analysis it also takes an innovative methodological path, highlighting the great benefits but also the risks and limitations of such an approach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and Pornography presents a series of essays which investigate the artistic status and aesthetic dimension of pornographic pictures, films, and literature, and explores the distinction, if there is any, between pornography and erotic art. Is there any overlap between art and pornography, or are the two mutually exclusive? If they are, why is that? If they are not, how might we characterize pornographic art or artistic pornography, and how might pornographic art be distinguished, if at all, from erotic art? Can there be aesthetic experience of pornography? What are some of the psychological, social, and political consequences of the creation and appreciation of erotic art or artistic pornography? Leading scholars from around the world address these questions, and more, and bring together different aesthetic perspectives and approaches to this widely consumed, increasingly visible, yet aesthetically underexplored cultural domain. The book, the first of its kind in philosophical aesthetics, will contribute to a more accurate and subtle understanding of the many representations that incorporate explicit sexual imagery and themes, in both high art and demotic culture, in Western and non-Western contexts. It is sure to stir debate, and healthy controversy.
