Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between the European Union (EU) and India have been growing in quantity and quality in the last two decades. Alongside the economic dimension, the political and security elements of the relationship have emerged as the most promising area for further collaboration between the two sides. This volume brings together analyses and recommendations on EU-India security relations in the fields of: (i) maritime security and freedom of navigation; (ii) cyber security and data protection; (iii) space policy and satellite navigation; (iv) defence cooperation. The chapters have been written by a select pan-European and Indian group of experts tasked by the Rome-based Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the Mumbai-based Gateway House (GH) in the framework of the EU-India Think Tank Twinning Initiative – a public diplomacy project aimed at connecting research institutions in Europe and India funded by the EU. The book provides the reader with original research and innovative insights into how to move forward EU-India relations. It will be essential reading for scholars and policy makers interested in the subject.

Book excerpt: India and the European Union bear a particular responsibility: as international relations change, not least because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the two largest democracies in the world have the unique potential to jointly demonstrate that trusting cooperation and mutual understanding are both indispensable and fruitful—all the more so in the context of increasing national egoism and disregard for the fundamental principles of multilateralism. This realisation is not new. Believing in the necessity and mutual benefit of close cooperation, India and the EU struck a strategic partnership in 2004. But resounding success in forging closer bilateral ties and promoting an inclusive, rules-based global order has proved elusive. Since 2016, however, the EU’s Global Strategy has offered new opportunities for a restart of European foreign policy, envisaging new partnerships and recalibrating existing ones. On India’s part, too, changing stances have presented new openings—with New Delhi criticising protectionism and calling for a strengthening of multilateralism. This timely book scrutinises the status quo and the future potential of revitalised EU-India relations. By exploring and analysing conceptual approaches to and key dimensions of the strategic partnership, including trade, climate policy and development cooperation, it evaluates the prospects for future cooperation. Lastly, it offers policy recommendations for advancing the partnership between India and the EU.

However, there seems to be a growing gap between their expectations from each other in most areas and their perceptions of the world order. What are the reasons for this state of affairs? Do they have the capacity to become 'strategic partners' in the near future? Will India prefer the US to the EU after the implementation of the India-US nuclear deal? Would the EU and India be able to settle their differences on human rights issues? ... Read inside what distinguished scholars and experts have to say"--Book cover.

Book excerpt: The Paradox of EU-India Relations: Missed Opportunities in Politics, Economics, Development Cooperation, and Culture, by Shazia Aziz WYlbers, successfully identifies problems and prospects in the relationship between two great entities. It is a comprehensive empirical study which, after addressing economics, politics, technology, and social interactions, ultimately indicates that the Indian worldview is undeniably different from the European Union worldview. This difference could therefore be the important cause for problematic divergences in foreign policy trends.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam, course: European Affairs, language: English, abstract: What is the analysis about? In view of globalization and economic reorganization, the EU needs to take up and intensify bilateral relations to current and future superpowers, like e.g. the United States of America and China People’s Republic. Increasingly, India is both in terms of global politics and economically awaking and stepping into the first row of global powers. At least, this is what it is supposed to according to observer. Moreover, the role of a major regional actor makes up the significance of India as a strategic partner, esp. in the fight against terrorism, which haunts India in equal measure like Europe. Thus, the European Union naturally has to strengthen cooperation with India. Since the EU wisely foresaw the majority of developments, they installed the so-called regular “EU / India Summit” in June 2000 and regular talks are held now. In the following, the analysis in question will deal with the steady relationship with India and the developments within the latter. Particularly, a focus is to be laid at the trade relations between the two sides. Firstly, I want to classify this relationship into the lane of all strategic partnerships of the European Union. By this, an evaluation of this relationship in contrast to other ones ought to be achieved. Starting from this, a description of the current situation between both parties and a prospect into the future of the latter are to be carried out. After a short explanation of the methodology, the findings will be presented. Here, a track down of particular issues to improve and new cooperation fields take the centre stage. This part is followed by a conclusion and possible solutions discovered during research. Based on those, recommendations will be made aiming particularly at trade relations. The European Union keeps up relations with several countries outside the old continent, and especially constant contact with six nations, i.e. the United States, Canada, Japan, China PR, Russia, and, most recently, India. Most currently, on September 7th, 2005, the sixth “EU / India Summit” took place in New Delhi. The journey, led by British prime minister and current EU president, Tony Blair, originally began with an “EU / China Summit”. Hence, political observers had the opportunity to directly compare the two relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transformation of India’s relations with Central and Eastern Europe from being a subset of Indo-Soviet relations during the Cold War to the rediscovery and rebuilding of relations with the region almost from scratch in the post-Cold War era. It examines how the combination of Brexit, the rise of China and India’s expanding geo-economic interests in Europe has led the Narendra Modi government to contemplate relations with Central Europe through a more strategic lens and treat the region as an autonomous element within India’s foreign policy rather than a footnote of its relations with other great powers. Fulfilling a long-felt gap in existing literature, this volume examines India’s political, economic, investment, defence and cultural relations with the Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). It analyzes Indian perceptions of Central Europe and explores prospects of New Delhi’s political and economic engagement with the region. The painstakingly compiled appendices on the exchange of bilateral visits and agreements between India and the Visegrad Four would be of immense use as a handy reference to scholars, policy-makers, and other interested persons and institutions.

Book excerpt: The unprecedented uncertainties marked by the pandemic and strategic conflicts between the key forces have redirected our attention to the importance of partnerships and engagements in international relations. India-EU dialogues through the annual summits have familiarized each other towards a greater understanding of one another’s perspectives and interests. Their strategic engagement has broadened in the last few years to include climate change, energy, connectivity, migration, education, science and technology, and research and innovation. The growing convergence in Brussels and New Delhi’s strategic interests open up new windows of opportunities for greater cooperation on diversified issues. Capturing the new momentum in India-EU relations, this book uncovers various issues and topics spanning across politics, education, and culture. Each chapter in this book analyzes the scope of the cooperation, the existing challenges that India and the EU encounter, and provides policy recommendations for the future.

This disregards the historical evidence of Alexander’s march to India and the Roman Empire’s trade with India. In more recent times cultural icons like Satyajit Ray have been celebrated more in Paris than elsewhere. India’s trade with EU, especially in defence items, is anchored to a greater extent in the continent rather than across the channel. Brexit is now going to take away that British prism. A fresh, and in many ways a profound new Indo-EU relationship is about to emerge. Bhaswati Mukherjee’s book “India and EU: An Insider’s View” is timely. It traces the past, explains the present state of relationship in all its complexity and looks into the crystal ball. This is an objective assessment by a highly regarded professional of the successes as also the wrinkles of the past in the relationship as well as the practical steps for a more vigorous Indo-EU future. Written with great fluency “India and EU-An Insider’s view” fascinates with its vignettes, making it a unique and must-read book."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union's foreign policy and its international role are increasingly being contested both globally and at home. At the global level, a growing number of states are now challenging the Western-led liberal order defended by the EU. Large as well as smaller states are vying for more leeway to act out their own communitarian principles on and approaches to sovereignty, security and economic development. At the European level, a similar battle has begun over principles, values and institutions. The most vocal critics have been anti-globalization movements, developmental NGOs, and populist political parties at both extremes of the left-right political spectrum. This book, based on ten case studies, explores some of the most important current challenges to EU foreign policy norms, whether at the global, glocal or intra-EU level. The case studies cover contestation of the EU's fundamental norms, organizing principles and standardized procedures in relation to the abolition of the death penalty, climate, Responsibility to Protect, peacebuilding, natural resource governance, the International Criminal Court, lethal autonomous weapons systems, trade, the security-development nexus and the use of consensus on foreign policy matters in the European Parliament. The book also theorizes the current norm contestation in terms of the extent to, and conditions under which, the EU foreign policy is being put to the test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can India and the EU expand their relationship from its current economic dimension to a broader, security-based dimension? Why is this not happening in spite of expressed willingness and the clear reciprocal benefits that would ensue? Is there a lack of frank dialogue on sensitive areas, or is there a more general lack of mutual understanding? The various Indian and European contributors to this volume - the result of long-standing collaboration between the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) and the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) - assess incipient progress and explore ways to advance India-EU relations in the bilateral and multilateral dimensions of the Strategic Partnership. Although it was launched in 2004, a consensus emerges that such a partnership cannot be called strategic as yet. Continuing discussion and analysis of pressing issues is thus necessary in order to facilitate a breakthrough. This book contains detailed proposals for widening the scope of cooperation to both traditional and non-traditional security issues, such as counter-terrorism, security sector reform in third countries and energy. It also explores the potential for India and the EU to reach consensus in international governance forums, with particular emphasis on economic governance, as well as prospects for effective inter-regional cooperation on the main global security issues, such as peacekeeping and maritime security -- EU Bookshop.
