Book Synopsis Primate Reproductive Aging by : Sylvia Atsalis
Download or read book Primate Reproductive Aging written by Sylvia Atsalis and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the unusually long post-reproductive lifespan characteristic of human females, primate reproductive aging receives a great deal of attention. Promoting and supporting discussion on comparative analyses of aging among diverse primate species, including humans, this publication highlights current research on female primate reproductive aging from both institutional-based as well as field studies. The contributions highlight the complex interaction between somatic and reproductive senescence. The latter is broadly manifested along a cross-taxonomic evolutionary continuum, with humans at one end of the spectrum exhibiting the lengthiest post-reproductive lifespan.Primatologists, anthropologists, evolutionary biologists, animal behaviorists, endocrinologists, neuroscientists, and all scholars interested in aging and reproduction will find this book a valuable source of information. Considering the increasing number of geriatric primates held in captivity, it will also be helpful to animal care professionals, as it calls attention to the special care that primates may require in order to monitor, maintain and improve their health as they age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the result of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Montaldo, Turin (Italy), between the 7 and 19 June 1972. The aim of the Study Institute has been the development of a general philosophy for the science of Primatology. Lecturers were selected from those scientists deeply involved and interested in this field. The course intended to serve students and researchers using primates in medical and biological research, but especially those interested in the natural history of the group and in human biology. In the past the study of primates was largely limited to deter mine the origin of the human species. Today, however, interest in them extends far beyond this narrow focus. In terms of both prac tical human purposes and theoretical interests, the study of primate biology and behaviour is of ever increasing importance. Their close comparative relationships with man has proved of such great value to human biology and medicine that their numbers and kinds are quickly dwindling. For this reason, one of the main focuses of the A.S.I. was on their reproductive biology and conservation. During the meeting days a broad series of lectures on specific topics of comparative anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, repro ductive physiology, genetics and molecular biology, cytogenetics and behaviour were delivered by leading primatologists.
Book Synopsis Reproductive Biology of the Great Apes by : Charles Graham
Download or read book Reproductive Biology of the Great Apes written by Charles Graham and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive Biology of the Great Apes: Comparative and Biomedical Perspectives discusses the great ape reproduction. The book opens with the menstrual cycle of apes as a good foundation for the subject areas that follow. Accordingly, Chapter 2 focuses on the endocrine changes during the stage of pregnancy among apes, specifically the hormonal changes in chimpanzee. Chapter 3 deals mainly on the condition postpartum amenorrhea. In Chapter 4, the reproductive and endocrine development – from fetal development, infancy, juvenile, to puberty – is discussed. Chapters 5 and 6 thoroughly discuss the female and male ape’s genital tract and their secretions. The sole topic of Chapter 7 deals mainly with the comparative aspects of ape steroid hormone metabolism. Meanwhile, Chapter 8 tackles laboratory research on apes’ sexual behavior. The succeeding chapters talk about the chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan reproduction in the wild. Chapters 12 and 13 basically look upon the behaviors of the great apes, specifically intermale competition and sexual selection. The next chapters (14 and 15) look at the necessity of breeding and managing apes in captivity to ensure their continued survival. Lastly, Chapter 16 highlights the significance and great value of apes as models and comparative study in human reproduction. This book will be of great use to human physiologists, comparative anatomists and zoologists, primatologists, ape breeders, and biomedical scientists.

Book Synopsis Reproduction and Fitness in Baboons: Behavioral, Ecological, and Life History Perspectives by : Larissa Swedell
Download or read book Reproduction and Fitness in Baboons: Behavioral, Ecological, and Life History Perspectives written by Larissa Swedell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together current research on the behavior, ecology, reproduction, and life history of baboons of the genus Papio, shedding light on what makes baboons successful. The book focuses on issues such as infanticide, mating strategies and investment, hybridization and genetics. The findings have broad applications to understanding the evolution of complex life history adaptations in other primates, and of humans in particular.

Book Synopsis New Perspectives in the Study of Mesoamerican Primates by : Alejandro Estrada
Download or read book New Perspectives in the Study of Mesoamerican Primates written by Alejandro Estrada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-31 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in primate field research, ecology, and conservation biology in Mesoamerica. The overall goal of each contribution is to integrate newly collected field data with theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, socioecology, biological anthropology, and conservation to identify how our current knowledge of primate behavior and ecology has moved beyond more traditional approaches. A corollary to this, and an important goal of the volume is to identify geographical regions and species for which we continue to lack sufficient information, to develop action plans for future research, and to identify areas for immediate conservation action. Despite many decades of primate research in Mesoamerica, much is still unknown concerning the basic ecology and behavior of these species, demography, current distribution, and conservation status of local populations, and the effectiveness of conservation policies on primate survivorship. Four major areas of research are the focus of the volume: Evolutionary Biology and Biogeography; Population Demography and Ecology; Behavior; and Conservation and Management Policies.
