Book excerpt: Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Informationsintegration in maschinell übersetzten, mehrsprachigen Textchats am Beispiel des Skype Translators im Sprachenpaar Katalanisch-Deutsch. Der Untersuchung von Textchats dieser Konfiguration wurde sich bislang nur wenig zugewendet. Deshalb wird der zunächst grundlegend explorativ ausgerichteten Forschungsfrage nachgegangen, wie Personen eine maschinell übersetzte Textchat-Kommunikation wahrnehmen, wenn sie nicht der Sprache des Gegenübers mächtig sind. Damit einher geht auch die Untersuchung der Informationsextraktion und -verarbeitung zwischen Nachrichten, die in der eigenen Sprache verfasst wurden, und der Ausgabe der Maschinellen Übersetzung. Zur Erfassung des Nutzungsverhalten im Umgang mit Skype und dem Skype Translator wurde mit einer deutschlandweit an Studierende gesendeten Online-Umfrage gearbeitet. In einer zweiteiligen, naturalistisch orientierten Pilotstudie unter Einsatz des Eye-Trackers wurde das Kommunikationsverhalten von Studierenden mit deutscher Muttersprache einerseits in maschinell vom Skype Translator übersetzten Chats mit katalanischen Muttersprachler·innen und andererseits, als Referenz, in monolingualen, rein deutschsprachigen Chats ohne Skype Translator untersucht. Bei den Teilnehmer·innen an diesen Studien handelt es sich um zwei unabhängige Gruppen. Beide wurden ebenfalls mit Fragebögen zum Nutzungsverhalten und zu den Eindrücken des Skype Translators erfasst. Das sicher überraschendste Ergebnis der Studie ist, dass die Versuchspersonen einen substanziellen Teil der Chatkommunikation auf der MÜ-Ausgabe in beiden beteiligten Sprachen verbringen. Die Untersuchung der Sakkaden und Regressionen deutet auf einen sprunghaften Wechsel zwischen Originalnachricht und MÜ hin. Der Schwerpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit liegt dabei konsequent auf den neusten Nachrichten. Es ist daher anzunehmen, dass die Versuchspersonen die MÜ-Ausgabe aktiv in die Kommunikation miteinbeziehen und wesentliche Informationen zwischen Original und MÜ abzugleichen versuchen.

So findet man im menschlichen Alltag eine Fülle von Ausdrucksweisen, in denen diese Tendenz zur Selbstdarstellung entweder besonders deutlich ausgeprägt ist oder die von vornherein und erklärtermaßen auch der Selbstpräsentation der Person, die sie hervorbringt, dienen. Werke aller Art, seien es handwerkliche Produkte, Autobiographien, Tagebücher, Theatervorstellungen, Performance oder Selbstportraits, wie das christusähnliche Selbstbildnis von Dürer, sind solche gewissermaßen‚ geronnenen verfestigten Äußerungen menschlicher Selbstdarstellung‘. ‚Selbstdarstellung‘ ist nach Mummendey (1995) immer ‚Darstellung des Individuums gegenüber einem wie auch immer gearteten Publikum‘. Egal, ob in der Kunst oder im Handwerk, im Beruf oder im Alltag - man stellt sich seiner sozialen Umwelt dar. Es kann sich hierbei eher um einen Interaktionspartner handeln oder man wendet sich ganz allgemein an die breite Öffentlichkeit, wie es im politischen Bereich vornehmlich praktiziert wird. Die Darstellung des Selbst spielt demnach in fast jeder sozialen Situation eine Rolle und so kann praktisch jedes menschliche Verhalten immer auch unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Selbstdarstellung aufgefaßt und interpretiert werden. Die Beschreibung und Klassifikation dieser mannigfaltigen Arten menschlicher Äußerungen ist natürlich auch für die Wissenschaft von besonderem Interesse und war bisher Anlaß für eine Vielzahl von Publikationen zum Thema. Es ist schwierig, die Komplexität menschlicher Selbstdarstellung zu beschreiben und in Worte zu fassen. Diese Arbeit möchte trotzdem den Versuch wagen, den Selbstdarstellungsprozeß als alltägliche Leistung, v.a. im politischen Bereich, in ihren Grundzügen zu umreißen. Im ersten Teil sollen die wichtigsten Begriffsklärungen vorgenommen sowie motivationale Aspekte im Konstrukt der Selbstdarstellung näher differenziert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit befaßt sich mit den Techniken der Selbstdarstellung - hier soll ein differenziertes Bild verschiedener Darstellungsformen in ihren Grundzügen entwickelt werden.

Book excerpt: No one is so intimately acquainted with Schleiermacher's Christian Ethics material or with the 1821-1822 first edition of his companion volume, Christian Faith, than Hermann Peiter. The present volume is a collection of Peiter's nineteen essays and thirty reviews. Extensive English summaries are offered for all this material, and an English version for four of the essays. Professor Peiter's summary of this volume reads as follows: This book treats of praxis in the Christian life and of Christian responsibility for the world we have in common. The following, however, forms a background for these considerations. Schleiermacher reminds his Christian brethren, who often deck themselves out with alien, borrowed plumes from morals and metaphysics, of their actual theme, that of religion, which he also designates as a kind or mode of faith. Like Luther, he also turns against both the practical misconception that considers faith itself to be a good work and the theoretical misconception that faith is a product of thinking, a theory. Whether a practitioner thinks to give thanks for one's own work or whether a theoretician hopes to find final fulfillment and justification in one's range of metaphysical ideas amounts to the same thing. Faith is the courage to be (Paul Tillich). For Schleiermacher, to want to have speculation (thus, metaphysics) and praxis without religion is the nonsalutary intention of Prometheus, who faintheartedly stole what he could have expected to possess in restful security. If taken seriously, the 'gods'-to use that pagan expression for once-are that nature to which a human being belongs. Each human being is their possession. When one steals what the gods have, one steals oneself, can thank oneself for a robbery. For a gift that is stolen, one cannot possibly be thankful. Only a pure gift awakens true joy. A human being has the chance to receive the gift that one is or is not (in case it is stolen) not from a thief but from religion. Thanks to one's birth, both physical and spiritual, one gains oneself and has oneself. To steal means to take away, to depreciate. In contrast, whoever has oneself from elsewhere is no longer extracted from oneself or from the one to whom one belongs.
