Book Synopsis Persistent Object Systems by : John Rosenberg
Download or read book Persistent Object Systems written by John Rosenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistent object systems are systems which support the creation and manipulation of objects in a uniform manner, regardless of how long they persist. This is in direct contrast with conventional systems where temporary objects are created and manipulated using one mechanism (typically programming language data structures) and permanent objects are maintained using a different mechanism (usually a filestore). The unification of temporary and permanent objects yields systems which are smaller and more efficient than conventional systems and which provide a powerful and flexible platform for the development of large, data intensive applications. This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop at which latest research in this area was discussed. The papers are grouped into sections on the following topics: type systems and persistence, persistent programming languages, implementing persistence, object stores, measurement of persistent systems, transactions and persistence, and persistent machines.

Book Synopsis Persistent Object Systems by : Malcolm Atkinson
Download or read book Persistent Object Systems written by Malcolm Atkinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Workshop on Persistent Object Systems was held at Les Mazets des Roches near Tarascon, Provence in southern France from the fifth to the ninth of September 1994. The attractive context and autumn warmth greeted the 53 participants from 12 countries spread over five continents. Persistent object systems continue to grow in importance. Almost all significant uses of computers to support human endeavours depend on long-lived and large-scale systems. As expectations and ambitions rise so the sophistication of the systems we attempt to build also rises. The quality and integrity of the systems and their feasibility for supporting large groups of co-operating people depends on their technical founda tion. Persistent object systems are being developed which provide a more robust and yet simpler foundation for these persistent applications. The workshop followed the tradition of the previous workshops in the series, focusing on the design, implementation and use of persistent object systems in particular and persistent systems in general. There were clear signs that this line of research is maturing, as engineering issues were discussed with the aid of evidence from operational systems. The work presented covered the complete range of database facilities: transactions, concurrency, distribution, integrity and schema modifica tion. There were examples of very large scale use, one involving tens of terabytes of data. Language issues, particularly the provision of reflection, continued to be important.

Book Synopsis Persistent Object Systems: Design, Implementation, and Use by : Graham N.C. Kirby
Download or read book Persistent Object Systems: Design, Implementation, and Use written by Graham N.C. Kirby and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ninth International Workshop on Persistent Object Systems (POS 9) took place at the SAS Radisson Hotel in Lillehammer, Norway, from 6th to 8th September 2000. Previous workshops in the series have been held in Scotland (1 and 2), Australia (3), the USA (4), Italy (5), France (6), and the USA (7 and 8). In keeping with those workshops, POS 9 was short but intensive, fitting 28 papers and panel sessions, a boat 1 excursion, and some memorable meals into two and a half days. The participants’ concentration was no doubt helped by the Northern European weather that prevailed for most of the workshop. Continuing a trend experienced over the previous few workshops, POS 9 had difficulty attracting a high number of papers. Of course it is hard to tell whether this is a problem with the field of persistent systems itself, or merely a consequence of the increasing number of workshops, conferences, and journals competing for submissions. In his Epilogue to the proceedings, Ron Morrison makes some interesting suggestions for possible improvements to future POS workshops. Out of a total of 26 submitted papers, 19 were accepted for presentation at the 2 workshop. Breaking down by region, 6 1/2 came from the USA , 1 from Africa, 3 1/2 from Australia, and 8 from Europe. In a new development for POS, an equal number of papers came from England and from Scotland.
Download or read book Resist and Persist written by Erin Wathen and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the roles women play in public life have evolved significantly, as have the pressures that come with needing to do it all, have it all, and be all things to all people. And with this progress, misogyny has evolved as well. Today's discrimination is more subtle and indirect, expressed in double standards, microaggressions, and impossible expectations. In other ways, sexism has gotten more brash and repulsive as women have gained power and voice in the mainstream culture. Patriarchy is still sanctioned by every institution: capitalism, government, and evenâ€"maybe especiallyâ€"the church itself. This is perhaps the ultimate ironyâ€"that a religion based on the radical justice and liberation of Jesus' teachings has been the most complicit part of the narrative against women's equality. If we are going to dial back the harmful rhetoric against women and their bodies, the community of faith is going to have to be a big part of the solution. Erin Wathen navigates the complex layers of what it means to be a woman in our time and placeâ€"from the language we use to the clothes that we wear to the unseen and unspoken assumptions that challenge our full personhood at every turn. Resist and Persist reframes the challenges to women's equality in light of our current culture and political climate, providing a new language of resistance that can free women and men from the pernicious power of patriarchy.

Book excerpt: The inspiring, influential senator and bestselling author mixes vivid personal stories with a passionate plea for political transformation. Elizabeth Warren is a beacon for everyone who believes that real change can improve the lives of all Americans. Committed, fearless, and famously persistent, she brings her best game to every battle she wages. In Persist, Warren writes about six perspectives that have influenced her life and advocacy. She’s a mother who learned from wrenching personal experience why child care is so essential. She’s a teacher who has known since grade school the value of a good and affordable education. She’s a planner who understands that every complex problem requires a comprehensive response. She’s a fighter who discovered the hard way that nobody gives up power willingly. She’s a learner who thinks, listens, and works to fight racism in America. And she’s a woman who has proven over and over that women are just as capable as men. Candid and compelling, Persist is both a deeply personal book and a powerful call to action. Elizabeth Warren—one of our nation’s most visionary leaders—will inspire everyone to believe that if we’re willing to fight for it, profound change is well within our reach.

Book Synopsis Security and Persistence by : John Rosenberg
Download or read book Security and Persistence written by John Rosenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a short visit to Bremen in December 1989 John Rosenberg had several discussions with me about computer architecture. Although we had previously worked together for more than a decade in Australia we had not seen each other for over a year, following my move to Bremen in 1988. Meanwhile John was spending a year on study leave at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with Professor Ron Morrison and his persistent programming research group. From our conversations it was quite clear that John was having a most fruitful time in St. Andrews and was gaining valuable new insights into the world of persistent programming. He was very keen to explore the significance of these insights for the MONADS Project, which we had been jOintly directing since the early 1980s. MONADS was not about persistent programming. In fact it had quite different origins, in the areas of software engineering and information protection. In an earlier stage of the project our ideas on these themes had led us into the world of computer architecture and even hardware deSign, in our attempts to provide an efficient base machine for our software ideas. The most important practical result of this phase of the project had been the development of the MONADS-PC, a mini computer which would be better compared with say a V tv

Book Synopsis Purposeful and Persistent Parenting by : John Raquet
Download or read book Purposeful and Persistent Parenting written by John Raquet and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes in our childhood, we fantasize about our future parenting skills and how we will be the ultimate mom or dad. These grand visions rarely survive the first few months of our own journey as parents-once that specter of self-will first manifests in our new bundle of joy. We quickly learn that while parenting is infinitely rewarding and a wonderful blessing, it is also a difficult, sometimes confusing, often thankless responsibility. We find ourselves wishing for a clear, simple, and preferably, illustrated instruction manual. In Purposeful and Persistent Parenting, John and Cindy Raquet seek to share, through encouraging examples of their journey toward God-honoring parenthood, the lessons they learned in raising their eight children. With personal stories of triumph and failure, goal-setting (and resetting), many practical tips, and a little blue tape, they hope that this work will be a valuable companion on your own adventure in parenting and instrumental in helping you to truly enjoy the work of raising your children.
Book Synopsis Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages by : Bharat Jayaraman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, especially those emerging from functional, logic, and c- straint languages. Declarative languages have been studied since the inception of computer science, and continue to be a vibrant subject of investigation today due to their applicability in current application domains such as bioinformatics, network con?guration, the Semantic Web, telecommunications software, etc. The 6th PADL Symposium was held in Dallas, Texas on June 18–19, 2004, and was co-located with the Compulog-Americas Summer School on Compu- tional Logic. From the submitted papers, the program committee selected 15 for presentation at the symposium based upon three written reviews for each paper, which were provided by the members of the program committee and additional referees. Two invited talks were presented at the conference. The ?rst was given by Paul Hudak (Yale University) on “An Algebraic Theory of Polymorphic T- poral Media. ” The second invited talk was given by Andrew Fall (Dowlland Technologies and Simon Fraser University) on “Supporting Decisions in C- plex, Uncertain Domains with Declarative Languages. ” Following the precedent set by the previous PADL symposium, the program committee this year again selected one paper to receive the ‘Most Practical - per’award.
