Book excerpt: In 1968, Dave Lowry embarked on an unusual journey, apprenticing himself to a master swordsman of the ancient Shinkage-ryu. In Lowry?s first book, Autumn Lightning, he began his tale of a teenaged Midwestern boy and his Japanese sensei. His account of the struggle to learn the art of swordsmanship and to understand the unique culture that engendered it continues in Persimmon Wind. When his teacher returned home to Japan, Lowry remained in the U.S.; more than a decade later, he undertook a long-postponed pilgrimage to Japan. Persimmon Wind is the story of his reunion with his teacher and his exploration of the sites and stories that are at the heart of the Shinkage-ryu.Persimmon Wind reveals a Japan unlikely to be witnessed by the average Westerner. Drawing on his deep knowledge of Japanese martial culture, Lowry acts as an interpreter of sorts, deftly describing the myriad ways in which Japan?s subtle, yet rich, customs and rituals inform and enrich the seemingly mundane practices of everyday life. At the same time, he explores what is truly essential to the purposeful life, as unveiled in the lessons of swordsmanship.

Download or read book For You written by Hayden Carruth and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1978-01-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects five long poems that have previously appeared, with one exception, only in magazines and limited editions. One critic has called them "virtually secret." Yet they are probably the heart of Carruth's poetic achievement, both technically and thematically. Rising from the experience of emotional illness and the asylum, the poems move at intervals and over a period of nearly fifty years toward a sustained, workable view of humanity in crisis."I have tried to create a person," Carruth writes, "specifically a seeing, living, surmounting person. Modesty is important, and so are winter and the north. A man alone in the snow is still much in this world, including the social world, though his 'in-ness' is naturally a form of rebellion."The poems included are The Asylum, Journey to a Known Place, North Winter, Contra Mortem and My Father's Face.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Environmental Physiology of Fruit Crops by : Bruce Schaffer
Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Physiology of Fruit Crops written by Bruce Schaffer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These exciting new companion handbooks are the only ones of their kind devoted solely to the effects of environmental variables on the physiology of the world's major fruit and nut crops. Their cosmopolitan scope includes chapters on tropical and temperate zone species written by scientists from several continents. The influence of environmental factors, such as irradiance, temperature, water and salinity on plant physiology and on vegetative and reproductive growth, is comprehensively discussed for each crop. In addition to being a thorough and up-to-date set of textbooks, the organzation of the two volumes makes them an excellent reference tool. Each chapter focuses on a single crop, or a group of genetically or horticulturally related crop, and is appropriately divided into subsections that address individual environmental factors. Some chapters emphasize whole-plant physiology and plant growth and development, while other chapters feature theoretical aspects of plant physiology. Several chapters provide botanical background discussions to enhance understanding of the crop's response to its environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Davey uses words with clarity and simplicity to describe the non-word realm of practicing these arts.”—Publishers Weekly "From an economic standpoint, this compilation sells for a price comparable to the price of a single copy of either of the first two works. In addition, the third work, The Japanese Way of the Flower: Ikebana as Moving Meditation, is no longer in print. This makes this compilation a very good deal and the quickest way to secure a copy of The Japanese Way of the Flower: Ikebana as Moving Meditation...In addition, the content of all three works is great. Any one of these books would be worth the price, and this book is great both as a Christmas present and a book for the beach." -- Michael Donnelly Sensei, veteran teacher of Aikido The three works anthologized here are essential to understanding the spiritual, meditative, and physical basis of all classical Japanese creative and martial arts. Living the Japanese Arts & Ways covers key concepts—like wabi and “stillness in motion”—while the other two books show the reader how to use brush calligraphy (shodo) and flower arranging (ikebana) to achieve mind-body unification. Illustrated with diagrams, drawings, and photographs.

Book Synopsis Mississippi Weather and Climate by : Kathleen Sherman-Morris
Download or read book Mississippi Weather and Climate written by Kathleen Sherman-Morris and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Hurricane Katrina to the Mississippi River floods of 1927 and 2011, and from a high temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of -19, Mississippi has seen its share of weather extremes. In fact, Mississippi's rainfall can be described in terms of "feast or famine." Even during the feast years, the rain may come at the wrong time for farmers to plant crops or in unwanted quantities. The Pearl River flood of 1979 is an example of too much rain falling over a short period of time with disastrous consequences. Mississippi Weather and Climate explores some of the reasons behind these extremes. The book begins with a look at the factors that shape Mississippi's climate and then moves into a discussion of normal weather conditions. Three chapters take a closer look at some of Mississippi's most dramatic weather. Historical events including the Candlestick Park tornado, Hurricanes Camille and Katrina, and the ice storms of 1994 and 1998 are described in more detail. The book details Mississippi's past climate as well as its projected climate and explores what the future may hold for residents of the state. Finally, the last two chapters reveal how the weather and climate affect people, from the way homes were built in Mississippi's early days and the types of plants that thrive or die here to the way weather information is collected and reported in the form of a local TV weather forecast. Mississippi Weather and Climate is a fascinating look at the science behind the weather and how natural events affect the people and land in the Magnolia State.

Book Synopsis Fighting Scholars by : Raúl Sánchez García
Download or read book Fighting Scholars written by Raúl Sánchez García and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Fighting Scholars’ offers the first book-length overview of the ethnographic study of martial arts and combat sports. The book’s main claim is that such activities represent privileged grounds to access different social dimensions, such as emotion, violence, pain, gender, ethnicity and religion. In order to explore these dimensions, the concept of ‘habitus’ is presented prominently as an epistemic remedy for the academic distant gaze of the effaced academic body. The book’s most innovative features are its empirical focus and theoretical orientation. While ethnographic research is a widespread and popular approach within the social sciences, combat sports and martial arts have yet to be sufficiently interrogated from an ethnographic standpoint. The different contributions of this volume are aligned within the same project that began to crystallize in Loïc Wacquant’s ‘Body and Soul’: the construction of a ‘carnal sociology’ that constitutes an exploration of the social world ‘from’ the body.
Download or read book Traditions written by Dave Lowry and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the budo--the martial arts and Ways of Japan--lie in refining the body and spirit. The techniques, methods, and rituals of the budo can provide invaluable lessons for today's martial artists--and serve as guides to a well-lived life. In Traditions, Davy Lowry discusses unique aspects of the budo ranging from hacho, or deliberate asymmetry, to uke-waza, the art of "receiving" an attack. The spirit of ryomi, the process of self-evaluation and improvement, is illustrated through the story of Kaofujita, a master swordsman who never stopped practicing the first movement he learned. You'll also learn the importance of yuyo, the distance where an attacker must focus his strike, from the story of Jubei, whose mastery of yuyo saved him in a life-and-death encounter, and the significance of shikaku--, the dead zone, on maintaining balance in combat and in life. With its focus on traditional martial arts, and fascinating stories that illustrate key martial arts principles and philosophy,Traditions will be required reading for serious martial artists.
