Book excerpt: The selected adventures of Persia's Hercules, from Iran's great national epic No understanding of world mythology is complete without acquaintance with Rostam, Iran's most celebrated mythological hero. According to the Shahnameh (the tenth-century Book of Kings), this titan, magnificent in strength and courage, bestrode Persia for 500 years. While he often served fickle kings - undergoing many trials of combat, cunning, and endurance - he was never their servant and owed allegiance only to his nation's greater good. Anyone interested in folklore, world literature, or Iranian culture will find Rostam both a rousing and illuminating read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In the breath that I die, for you I'll be longing/ Wishing to turn into the dust of your belonging' - Sa'di, Expressions of Love. With poetry which speaks across the ages, Sa'di (1210-1281) is a vital classical poet and a towering figure of the medieval Persian canon. Comparable in skill and stature to other Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi and Omar Khayyam, Sa'di's verses--best known through his 'Bustan' and 'Golestan' address universal themes of passion, love and the human condition in works which are both psychologically perceptive and beautifully crafted. His mystical writings, contemporaneous with Rumi, reveal a degree of depth, wisdom and insight which have placed Sa'di in the pantheon of world literature. In this essential new translation of Sa'di's work, leading expert on Iranian studies Homa Katouzian seeks to bring the poet's lyrics to a new readership. The book provides the Persian text and Katouzian's English translation side-by-side, creating an indispensible tool for students and enthusiasts of Iranian history, literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shams al-Din Mohammad Hafez is in love. He is in love with a girl, with a city, and with Persian poetry. Despite his enmity with the new and dangerous city leader, the jealousy of his fellow court poets, and the competition for his beloved, Iran’s favorite poet remains unbothered. When his wit and charm are not enough to keep him safe in Shiraz, his friends conspire to keep him out of trouble. But their schemes are unsuccessful. Nothing will chase Hafez from this city of wine and roses. In Pezeshkzad’s fictional account, Hafez’s life in fourteenth-century Shiraz is a mix of peril and humor. Set in a city that is at once beautiful and cutthroat, the novel includes a cast of historical figures to illuminate this elusive poet of the Persian literary tradition. Shabani-Jadidi and Higgins’s translation brings the beloved poetry of Hafez alive for an English audience and reacquaints readers with the comic wit and original storytelling of Pezeshkzad.

Book excerpt: Why did no one ever tell me that if it's true love, you shouldn't have to work so f*cking hard for it? Persia is about to turn 30. Having been a walking, talking, dating disaster for most of her adult life, she's finally had enough of the drama of chasing emotionally unavailable commitment-phobes. After an excruciating break-up, Persia is taken on a journey around the world (but also inward) to discover the real cause of her romantic misery: her relationship with herself. Divided into 3 parts, Heal, Attract and Commit, this pioneering teaching memoir will have you laughing, crying and cringing in recognition. Expect profound insights, powerful tips and daringly vulnerable personal stories. 'It took me ten long and painful years to learn what Persia has managed to put in this one book with such raw honesty, wisdom and most importantly, vulnerability.' Ashley James - Presenter, DJ, Dating & Empowerment Coach

Book excerpt: Love is a major theme in Persian poetry and can be interpreted in various ways—as mystic love, the basis of the relationship between humans and God, or as passionate or affectionate love between lovers, husbands and wives, parents and children, family and friends, or even as patriotic love of Iran. The literary style and indeed the Persian language itself are floral and elaborate, but the themes differ little from our preoccupations with love and romance today. This collection of extracts has been selected from the best of traditional and contemporary Persian poetry. Each poem is illustrated with a fine example of Persian art from the collections of the British Museum. With a brief introduction to the Persian poetic tradition and a short biographical note about each of the poets, this beautiful anthology is the perfect way to discover the treasures of Persian literature and art.

Book excerpt: Some of the world's earliest large-form fictional narratives--what would today be called novels-are found in ancient Greece. Dating back to the first century CE, these narratives contain many of the elements common to the novelistic genre, for instance, the joining, separation, and reunion of two lovers. These ancient works have often been heralded as the ancestors of the modern novel; but what can we say of the origins of the Greek novel itself? This book argues that whereas much of Greek literature was committed to a form of cultural purism, presenting itself as part of a continuous tradition reaching back to the founding fathers within the tradition, the novel reveled in cultural hybridity. The earliest Greek novelistic literature combined Greek and non-Greek traditions. More than this, however, it also often self-consciously explored its own hybridity by focusing on stories of cultural hybridization, or what we would now call "mixed-race" relations. This book is thus not a conventional account of the origins of the Greek novel: it is not an attempt to pinpoint the moment of invention, and to trace its subsequent development in a straight line. Rather, it makes a virtue of the murkiness, or "dirtiness," of the origins of the novel: there is no single point of creation, no pure tradition, only transgression and transformation. The novel thus emerges as an outlier within the Greek literary corpus: a form of literature written in Greek, but not always committing to Greek cultural identity. Dirty Love focuses particularly on the relationship between Persian, Egyptian, Jewish and Greek literature, and explores such texts as Ctesias' Persica, Joseph and Aseneth, the Alexander Romance, and the tale of Ninus and Semiramis. It will appeal not only to those interested in Greek literary history, but also to readers of near eastern and biblical literature.

Book excerpt: Young, eager, adventurous, and willing to accept God's commission, Frank and Florence Oster began their married life by setting off to Persia, the land of the Queen Esther. Frank Oster and one of his classmates had been the first resident Adventist missionaries in that country. Following his marriage, Frank took his bride back to his field of labor. These young people went with the intent that this would be their place of labor until the Lord came. Whatever the Lord had for them to do, they determined to do His bidding. "Inshallah" (if God wills it) became their motto. You'll laugh and cry as you read the story about their introduction to the culture and customs of Persia; terror caused by Kurdish raids; the young couple's mission endevors; the birth of their first child and, not long after, the death of the little one. You'll feel the joys and sorrows experienced in the home as three little boys were born to them. You'll anticipate with them the furlough, when at long last they were told they could return home for a visit. You'll wonder how they could feel so deeply about leaving Persia to go to Turkey, but that is all a part of the story--thirty-five years of mission service! Was the burden too great? The price too high? A thousand times No, say those of the family who still remain. The story has not ended with the writing of this book. One of the sons, Kenneth Oster, and his wife, Dorothy Nelson Oster, have gone on to achieve their own mission record of thirty-two years in the Middle East. Dr. Kenneth has used his lifetime acquaintance with the local languages and culture to cultivate a new approaches to the Moslem world. The results of the dedicated work and lives of this family will be fully known only in the kingdom to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Ashkan Tashakkori was born to a Muslim family in Iran in 1958. However, he became disillusioned with religion when he observed the parasitic lives of the mullahs. He hated their hypocrisy and came to believe that Islamic ideology was the main cause of backwardness in Persian society. In I Wish I Were a Jew, Tashakkori explains the roots of the enmity with Israel and the Jewish nation in various countries, particularly the Muslim world. After offering an objective appraisal of achievements of the Jews and the key part theyve played in the elevation of civilization and progress of human society, he presents insights into the common misconceptions about the Jewish people and lists a number of carefully worked out solutions for overcoming them. It also examines the historical and cultural roots of the deep-seated friendship that ties the fates of the Persian and Jewish nations together. Providing a new perspective on a crucial issue, I Wish I Were a Jew delves into the historical and political problems that have plagued this age. It can help the two sides, which have been locked in an unending feud, free themselves of their prejudices and reach a mutual understanding that guarantees a long-lasting peace in the world.
