Book excerpt: Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. For example, the common red poppy is known as "Blind Man" due to an old superstitious belief that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Many plant names derived from superstition, folk lore, or primal beliefs. Other names are purely descriptive and can serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. For example, Beauty-Berry is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa. Callicarpa is Greek for beautiful fruit. Still other names come from literary sources providing rich detail of the transmission of words through the ages.Conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore and ethnobotanical studies, this fully revised edition of Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origins contains over 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants. Wild and cultivated plants alike are identified by the botanical name. Further detail provides a brief account of the meaning of the name and detailed commentary on common usage.* Includes color images * Inclusive of all Latin terms with vernacular derivatives * The most comprehensive guide for plant scientists, linguists, botanists, and historians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed testing centers exist in almost every country in every corner of the globe. More and more students are enrolling in programs that require knowledge of the complex and fascinating science of seed pathology. The implications of seed pathology for human health remains an important issue. For all of these reasons and more, this book is a necessary and timely reference that covers the full range of related topics, including techniques for detecting and studying microorganisms associated with seeds, their epidemiology, and control. No other book like this exists. Until now, the information has been widely scattered in journals and other sources. This is an excellent new edition - ideal for students and teachers in the agricultural and life sciences; individuals involved in seed certification; members of plant quarantine laboratories; plant pathologists doing research in seed pathology; and producers of planting seeds for the next season's crops. Book excerpt: The results obtained to date involving the use of in ~ methods to facilitate wide hybridization in plants are voluminous and impressive. The techniques of embryo culture, ovule culture, and in~ pollination and fertilization represent an extension of the normal sexual hybridization process. Successes recorded in obtaining hybrids stem largely from circumventing prezygotic or postzygotic hybridization barriers. Numerous recent successful hybridizations were possible because of the development of improved tissue and cell culture systems for crop plants and attention given to genotypes used in hybridization attempts. Interspecific and intergeneric hybridization utilizing the process of protoplast fusion will bypass the limits set by all sexual me'thods. In addition to combining complete genomes from two different species through protoplast fusion, this system affords unique opportunities for creating novel cytoplasmic combinations, transfer of individual chromosomes, transfer of cytoplasmic organelles, manipulation of male sterility, and for single gene transfer. Some caution must be noted with regard to the extent of hybridization possible between distantly related species. Although practically no limit exists to the physical fusion of protoplasts from widely divergent species, the restrictions imposed by somatic incompatibility have not been adequately addressed. Regeneration of plants from the protoplast or single heterokaryon level is still a major hurdle for many important crop species before somatic cell fusion can be exploited to produce interspecific and intergeneric hybrids. Identification and selection of hybrids is also a limitation to the efficient application of cell fusion methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book was written to serve those interested in seed pathology. It is designed to serve as a textbook as well as a reference book for students, teachers, and researchers, and for seed health testing, seed production, and plant quarantine personnel. It is to be used as a guide to the literature. Much of the illustrative material has come from the authors' files used for teaching or from their own research. Teachers will want to supplement this book with examples from their own experience and research ot with information and data from other seed pathology programs. The authors hope that this book, in addition to being of value to seed and plant pathologists, will be useful to agriculturalists interested in crop production. It was written in part to stimulate research in seed pathology and its importance to the role of seedborne inoculum in the epidemiology and control of plant diseases.
