Book excerpt: ‘Perrault’s Fairy Tales’ is a wonderful collection of some true classics of children’s literature. Perrault (1628 – 1703) was among the first writers to bring magical children’s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to his original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. They remain as popular today, as they were then. He is responsible for such famous works as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, and ‘Puss in Boots’. ‘Perrault’s Fairy Tales’ are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of a master of the trade; Honor C. Appleton (1879 – 1951). Appleton illustrated over one-hundred-and-fifty books during the course of her career, with her most famous works including Our Nursery Rhyme Book (1912), Charles Perrault’s Fairy Tales (1919), and the collected stories of Hans Christian Andersen (1922). As her career progressed, she began producing bolder images for literary classics – but her best-loved drawings remain those for the children’s market. Presented alongside the text, Appleton’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance Perrault’s magical storytelling Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. Book excerpt: This collection, ‘The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen – with Honor Appleton illustrations’ is decorated with the magnificent colour and black-and-white artwork of Honor C. Appleton. It contains some of Andersen’s best stories, including such well-known and loved tales as ‘The Little Mermaid, ‘The Steadfast Tin Soldier’, ‘The Ugly Duckling’, ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘The Little Match Girl’ and ‘The Red Shoes’. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children’s stories, but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Andersen’s stories often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. The stories are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of Honor C. Appleton (1879 – 1951). Appleton illustrated over one-hundred-and-fifty books during the course of her career, with her most famous works including Our Nursery Rhyme Book (1912), and Charles Perrault’s Fairy Tales (1919). As her career progressed, she began producing bolder images for literary classics – but her best-loved drawings remain those for the children’s market. Presented alongside the text, the Honor Appleton illustrations further refine and elucidate Andersen’s captivating narratives. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. Book excerpt: This volume of the Golden Age of Illustration Series contains Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Snow Queen’. This classic fairy tale has been continuously in print in different editions since its first publication, with many, many, different artists illustrating the story over the years. This edition features a beautiful collection of the best of that art, taken from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Harry Clarke, Honor Appleton, Jennie Harbour, among others. This series of books celebrates the Golden Age of Illustration. During this period, the popularity, abundance and – most importantly – the unprecedented upsurge in the quality of illustrated works marked an astounding change in the way that publishers, artists and the general public came to view this hitherto insufficiently esteemed art form. The Golden Age of Illustration Series, has sourced the rare original editions of these books and reproduced the beautiful art work in order to build a unique collection of illustrated fairy tales.

Lee for younger readers. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is the best known work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 – 1898); better known by his pen name, ‘Lewis Carroll’. Telling the tale of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by surreal and anthropomorphic creatures, the book was a huge commercial success on its initial publication in 1865. It was followed by its sequel, ‘Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There’, in 1871. The story has enjoyed lasting popularity with both adults and children alike – and is here retold in a wonderful children’s edition. The ‘Children’s Alice’ is accompanied by the endearing black and white drawings of Honor C. Appleton (1879 – 1951). Appleton illustrated over one-hundred-and-fifty books during the course of her career, with her most famous works including Our Nursery Rhyme Book (1912),Charles Perrault’s Fairy Tales (1919), and the collected stories of Hans Christian Andersen (1922). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inger was a little girl but she was a bad person. This was obvious even when she was very small: she enjoyed catching insects and tearing off their wings without any pity for the poor creatures. When she was a bit bigger, her parents sent her to the country to a good family. Here, she became very refined and, going to visit her parents, decided to walk on her bread rather than in the marsh so she would not dirty her shoes. And this is where her real story begins... Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.
