Book Synopsis The Uses of Obscurity by : Allon White
Download or read book The Uses of Obscurity written by Allon White and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this book examines why and how textual difficulty became a norm of modernist literature and questions how we can begin to account for the forms of obscurity and difficulty which developed in the late 19th Century and which became so important to modernism. The author argues that the decline of realism entailed the growth of ‘symptomatic’ or ‘subtextual’ reading which tended to treat fiction as compromised autobiography. This kind of reading left the author dangerously isolated and exposed in the midst of a newly sophisticated public. Within this general cultural perspective, the book traces the private anxieties that led George Meredith, Joseph Conrad and Henry James to conceal themselves within their complex and resistant fictions. It discusses opacity in the texts themselves – embarrassment and shame in Meredith; ‘engimas’ in Conrad; and the fear of vulgarity and knowledge in Henry James.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that reading about the lives of artists enhances our understanding of their work--and that their work reveals something about them--but the relationship between biography and art is rarely straightforward. In The Life and the Work, art historians Thomas Crow, Charles Harrison, Rosalind Krauss, Debora Silverman, Paul Smith, and Robert Williams address this fundamental if convoluted relationship. Looking to such figures as Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Leonardo da Vinci, and the artists associated with the name Art & Language, the volume's authors have written a set of provocative essays that explore how an artist's life and art are intertwined."

Book Synopsis Physis, Biopower, and Biothermodynamics by : Enrique Leff
Download or read book Physis, Biopower, and Biothermodynamics written by Enrique Leff and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the idea that our current "environmental question" arises from the history of metaphysics—which privileged thought about Being (or ontology) over the conditions of life—this book reinterprets Heraclitus’s notion of physis as the fundamental, emergent potency of life, as the category to-be-thought by thinkers. In so doing, it deconstructs the interpretation offered by Heidegger and so stresses the struggle between the creative force of life and its subjection to the human Logos or "meaning". Physis, understood as the pre-ontological potentiality of life itself, thus becomes the cornerstone of a materialist philosophy of life. Following engagements with the work of Nietzsche, Foucault, and Janicaud to explore the significance of human intervention into the realm of life via the "will to power", "biopower" and the "power of rationality" respectively, the author explores twentieth-century rearticulations of the concept of physis through a range of developments in biothermodynamics, thus grounding a new philosophy of life and a new bioeconomics in a revisited biothermodynamics centered on the concept of negentropy. An extensive engagement with the history and development of thought about the generative force of life on Earth, Physis, Biopower, Biothermodynamics, and Bioeconomics: The Fire of Life will appeal to scholars of philosophy, social theory, and political theory with interests in environmental thought, political ecology, and questions of sustainability.

Book excerpt: Three very different women, each trying to reconcile her dreams with reality, are drawn together by a hypnotic voice from the past. In a once-grand Southern California neighborhood, Linda, a New York City transplant, is panicking over the disappearance of her precocious ten-year-old stepdaughter. Christine, who has struggled to get pregnant for years, finds herself expecting a baby—just as her husband is accused of murder. And Audrey, who’s always played it safe because of her family’s history of bad luck, takes a romantic risk and suddenly finds herself facing a disaster of her own. When an old journal surfaces at a neighbor’s tag sale, the women are inexorably drawn into the life of Mala Rinehart, an itinerant Romany woman who wrote down spells and predictions in a cryptic, slanting hand. As the three women feel the pull from across sixty intervening years, they vow to discover what became of Mala. For through the worn pages, their happiness has intertwined with hers, their futures spelled out in her chants and recipes. And as they unravel the mystery of Mala’s origins, their lives transform in ways they never could have expected.
