Book excerpt: In adaptive control the goal is to deal with systems that have unknown and/or time-varying parameters. Most techniques are proven for the case in which any time-variation is slow, with results for systems with fast time-variations limited to those for which the time-variation is of a known form or for which the plant has stable zero dynamics. Here we propose a new adaptive controller design methodology for which the time-variation can be rapid. While the plant is allowed to have unstable-zero dynamics, it must satisfy several structural conditions which have been proven to be necessary in the literature; we also impose some mild regularity conditions. The proposed controller is nonlinear and periodic, and in each period the parameter values are estimated and an appropriate stabilizing control signal is applied. Under the technical assumptions that the plant is relative degree one and that the plant uncertainty is in terms of a single scalar variable, it is proven that the closed loop system is stable under fast parameter variations with persistent jumps.

Adaptive control techniques have been developed since 1950's and most results were proven in the cases when the time-variations were non-existent or slow. However the results pertaining to systems with fast time-variations are still limited, in particular, when it comes to plants with unstable zero dynamics. In this work we adopt the controller design technique from the area of gain scheduling, where the time-varying parameter is assumed to be measurable. We propose the design of a nonlinear periodic controller, where in each period the state and parameter values are estimated and an appropriate stabilizing control signal is applied. It is shown that the closed loop system is stable under fast parameter variations with persistent jumps: the trajectory of the closed loop state in response to the initial condition is bounded by a decaying exponential plus a gain times the size of the noise. Our approach imposes several constraints on the plant; however, we show that there exists at least one interesting class of systems, which includes plants with unstable zero dynamics, that can be stabilized by our controller.

Download or read book Stability and Control of Nonlinear Time-varying Systems written by Shuli Guo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents special systems derived from industrial models, including the complex saturation nonlinear functions and the delay nonlinear functions. It also presents typical methods, such as the classical Liapunov and Integral Inequalities methods. Providing constructive qualitative and stability conditions for linear systems with saturated inputs in both global and local contexts, it offers practitioners more concise model systems for modern saturation nonlinear techniques, which have the potential for future applications. This book is a valuable guide for researchers and graduate students in the fields of mathematics, control, and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory text on the analysis, control, and estimation of nonlinear systems, appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students This self-contained and accessible introduction to the concepts and techniques used for nonlinear feedback systems offers a holistic treatment suitable for use in both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses; students need only some familiarity with differential equations and linear algebra to understand the material presented. The text begins with an overview of stability and Lyapunov methods for nonlinear systems, with Lyapunov’s second method revisited throughout the book as a connective thread. Other introductory chapters cover linear systems, frequency domain methods, and discrete-time systems. Building on this background material, the book provides a broad introduction to the basic ideas underpinning major themes of research in nonlinear control, including input-to-state stability, sliding mode control, adaptive control, feedback linearization, and robust output regulation. Chapters also cover observer design and estimation for nonlinear systems. The text is notable for its coverage of nonlinear model predictive control and its introduction to the use of linear matrix inequalities and semidefinite programming coupled with their use in modern antiwindup designs. • First text on nonlinear control appropriate for undergraduates • Suitable both for students preparing for rigorous graduate study and for those entering technical fields outside of academia • Unique in its coverage of recent research topics • Pedagogical features including extensive chapter summaries, examples, and appendixes with definitions, results, and MATLAB applications

This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear, Time-varying Approximations to Nonlinear Dynamical Systems introduces a new technique for analysing and controlling nonlinear systems. This method is general and requires only very mild conditions on the system nonlinearities, setting it apart from other techniques such as those – well-known – based on differential geometry. The authors cover many aspects of nonlinear systems including stability theory, control design and extensions to distributed parameter systems. Many of the classical and modern control design methods which can be applied to linear, time-varying systems can be extended to nonlinear systems by this technique. The implementation of the control is therefore simple and can be done with well-established classical methods. Many aspects of nonlinear systems, such as spectral theory which is important for the generalisation of frequency domain methods, can be approached by this method.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Control Under Nonconstant Delays by : Nikolaos Bekiaris-Liberis
Download or read book Nonlinear Control Under Nonconstant Delays written by Nikolaos Bekiaris-Liberis and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have developed a methodology for control of nonlinear systems in the presence of long delays, with large and rapid variation in the actuation or sensing path, or in the presence of long delays affecting the internal state of a system. In addition to control synthesis, they introduce tools to quantify the performance and the robustness properties of the designs provided in the book. The book is based on the concept of predictor feedback and infinite-dimensional backstepping transformation for linear systems and the authors guide the reader from the basic ideas of the concept?with constant delays only on the input?all the way through to nonlinear systems with state-dependent delays on the input as well as on system states. Readers will find the book useful because the authors provide elegant and systematic treatments of long-standing problems in delay systems, such as systems with state-dependent delays that arise in many applications. In addition, the authors give all control designs by explicit formulae, making the book especially useful for engineers who have faced delay-related challenges and are concerned with actual implementations and they accompany all control designs with Lyapunov-based analysis for establishing stability and performance guarantees.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Time-Delay Systems by : Emilia Fridman
Download or read book Introduction to Time-Delay Systems written by Emilia Fridman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the 21st century can be characterized as the” time-delay boom” leading to numerous important results. The purpose of this book is two-fold, to familiarize the non-expert reader with time-delay systems and to provide a systematic treatment of modern ideas and techniques for experts. This book is based on the course ”Introduction to time-delay systems” for graduate students in Engineering and Applied Mathematics that the author taught in Tel Aviv University in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years. The sufficient background to follow most of the material are the undergraduate courses in mathematics and an introduction to control. The book leads the reader from some basic classical results on time-delay systems to recent developments on Lyapunov-based analysis and design with applications to the hot topics of sampled-data and network-based control. The objective is to provide useful tools that will allow the reader not only to apply the existing methods, but also to develop new ones. It should be of interest for researchers working in the field, for graduate students in engineering and applied mathematics, and for practicing engineers. It may also be used as a textbook for a graduate course on time-delay systems.
