An adaptive controller typically consists of an LTI compensator together with an identifier or a tuner which is used to adjust the compensator parameters. A common approach to tuning is to invoke the Certainty Equivalence Principle, where at each instance of time the estimated plant parameters are assumed to be correct and the controller gains are updated accordingly. In this work we consider the first order case. We use the Certainty Equivalence approach to periodically estimate the plant parameters and then update the control action in order to provide stability. The data from first two steps are used to estimate the system parameters for the next two steps; the approach works by using a nominal control law and adding a small perturbation to the gain. The controller is proven to be noise tolerant, and we are able to prove a linear-like bound on the closed-loop behavior.

Adaptive control techniques have been developed since 1950's and most results were proven in the cases when the time-variations were non-existent or slow. However the results pertaining to systems with fast time-variations are still limited, in particular, when it comes to plants with unstable zero dynamics. In this work we adopt the controller design technique from the area of gain scheduling, where the time-varying parameter is assumed to be measurable. We propose the design of a nonlinear periodic controller, where in each period the state and parameter values are estimated and an appropriate stabilizing control signal is applied. It is shown that the closed loop system is stable under fast parameter variations with persistent jumps: the trajectory of the closed loop state in response to the initial condition is bounded by a decaying exponential plus a gain times the size of the noise. Our approach imposes several constraints on the plant; however, we show that there exists at least one interesting class of systems, which includes plants with unstable zero dynamics, that can be stabilized by our controller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many algorithms proposed for adaptive control which will provide globally asymptotically stable controllers if some stringent conditions on the plant are met. The conditions on the plant cannot be met in practice as all plants will contain high frequency unmodeled dynamics therefore, blind implementation of the published algorithms can lead to disastrous results. This paper uses a linearization analysis of a non-linear adaptive controller to demonstrate analytically design guidelines which alleviate some of the problems associated with adaptive control in the presence of unmodeled dynamics.

Book excerpt: This book covers a wide spectrum of systems such as linear and nonlinear multivariable systems as well as control problems such as disturbance, uncertainty and time-delays. The purpose of this book is to provide researchers and practitioners a manual for the design and application of advanced discrete-time controllers. The book presents six different control approaches depending on the type of system and control problem. The first and second approaches are based on Sliding Mode control (SMC) theory and are intended for linear systems with exogenous disturbances. The third and fourth approaches are based on adaptive control theory and are aimed at linear/nonlinear systems with periodically varying parametric uncertainty or systems with input delay. The fifth approach is based on Iterative learning control (ILC) theory and is aimed at uncertain linear/nonlinear systems with repeatable tasks and the final approach is based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) and is intended for highly uncertain systems with heuristic control knowledge. Detailed numerical examples are provided in each chapter to illustrate the design procedure for each control method. A number of practical control applications are also presented to show the problem solving process and effectiveness with the advanced discrete-time control approaches introduced in this book.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was motivated by the generalization of the derivative and difference orders. It presents a new adaptive control technique using fractional-order derivative based on Caputo's definition. This is the first time the fractional-order adaptive laws have been used with an integer order stable manifold for approximating the uncertainty. We have utilized direct and indirect adaptive control techniques in both Continuous-time (CT) and Discrete-time. In CT, the DAC approach is used to approximate the controller, while the IAC is used to approximate the plant, using universal function approximators such as fuzzy systems or multi-layer perceptrons with one hidden layer. A new Lemma is introduced to generalize the equality of the Caputo and Riemann-Liouville derivatives which is useful for developing a Lyapunov candidate to prove the stability of the fractional-order adaptive law for direct and indirect cases. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that traditional integer-order adaptive control is a special case of the more general fractional-order adaptive control scheme introduced here. A magnetic levitation example is provided to show the practicality of using the fractional-order derivative and difference for updating the approximator parameters. In DT, we implement a stand-alone function approximation, in structured uncertainty form, via generalization of the normalized gradient descent adaptive law to include the fractional orders. The designed fractional order is further modified to identify the true ideal value of the parameter vector in spite of the lack of persistence of excitation. We prove the stability using two different approaches (i.e. Lyapunov direct method and matrix stability analysis). Moreover, this study is extended to control a class of discrete nonlinear systems. Moreover, and crucially, the technique introduced here in both CT and DT does not make unrealistic assumptions about the plant, since the fractional-order differential equations are used to increase the degrees of freedom of the adaptive technique and thus provide extra flexibility to the control designer. For both CT and DT, this research will open the door for utilizing fractional calculus in the control system.

Book excerpt: This book, published in honor of Professor Laurent Praly on the occasion of his 65th birthday, explores the responses of some leading international authorities to new challenges in nonlinear and adaptive control. The mitigation of the effects of uncertainty and nonlinearity – ubiquitous features of real-world engineering and natural systems – on closed-loop stability and robustness being of crucial importance, the contributions report the latest research into overcoming these difficulties in: autonomous systems; reset control systems; multiple-input–multiple-output nonlinear systems; input delays; partial differential equations; population games; and data-driven control. Trends in Nonlinear and Adaptive Control presents research inspired by and related to Professor Praly’s lifetime of contributions to control theory and is a valuable addition to the literature of advanced control.

Book excerpt: Designed to meet the needs of a wide audience without sacrificing mathematical depth and rigor, Adaptive Control Tutorial presents the design, analysis, and application of a wide variety of algorithms that can be used to manage dynamical systems with unknown parameters. Its tutorial-style presentation of the fundamental techniques and algorithms in adaptive control make it suitable as a textbook. Adaptive Control Tutorial is designed to serve the needs of three distinct groups of readers: engineers and students interested in learning how to design, simulate, and implement parameter estimators and adaptive control schemes without having to fully understand the analytical and technical proofs; graduate students who, in addition to attaining the aforementioned objectives, also want to understand the analysis of simple schemes and get an idea of the steps involved in more complex proofs; and advanced students and researchers who want to study and understand the details of long and technical proofs with an eye toward pursuing research in adaptive control or related topics. The authors achieve these multiple objectives by enriching the book with examples demonstrating the design procedures and basic analysis steps and by detailing their proofs in both an appendix and electronically available supplementary material; online examples are also available. A solution manual for instructors can be obtained by contacting SIAM or the authors. Book excerpt: Design of a discrete optimal regulator requires the a priori knowledge of a mathematical model for the system of interest. Because a second order model with transport lag is very amenable to control computations and because this type of model has been used previously to represent high order processes, an adaptive controller was designed using an extended Kalman filter to track the model parameters which were subsequently used to update the optimal control gains. Favorable results were obtained for a third order process controlled using this model so as to minimize both a sum squared error index and a summed absolute error index. (Author).
