Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wholeheartedly bought into the American dream that told me if I planned right and worked hard, I could achieve anything I set my sight upon. I came very close to achieving my American dream when I came face-to-face with real evil in the form of a group of work colleagues I considered to be good people. For this gang, the American dream was theirs to grant or deny. They decided who succeeded and who was disposable. Success in this company had nothing to do with talent, dedication, hard work, knowledge or experience and everything to do with who the group in charge liked, who was willing to play their deceitful games and who was willing to sell their integrity for the price of a job. In this environment, dreams were achieved at the price of your soul - a price I was unwilling to pay. I tell my story in this book with the hope that other victims of abusive behavior in the workplace recognize the signs of the campaign being waged against them in secret. I want them to be aware of what is happening to them at the time it is happening so that they can be strategic in how they counter-attack. Power abusers, like the ethics officer in my workplace and the bully in the school bathroom, need their targets to remain ignorant of their strategies so that the target questions himself at every turn. As someone who fell victim to their successful strategies, my goal with this book is to arm other targets with knowledge so that they can forge an effective offensive and defensive counter strategy. This book was a very long time in the making because it required all the years it took for me to become thoroughly honest with myself so that I could write a book that honestly confronts this pernicious problem in our society. What we have labeled as bullying doesn't only destroy a person's confidence, self esteem, mental acuity and overall sense of well being; it also kills their dreams. All my plans and goals were stopped dead in their tracks once I was targeted. It didn't have to be that way. According to the extensive research I have conducted on the subject, my story is just one of so many that are getting played out in all areas of our society. The bullies of our world are increasingly becoming the winners of our world. The only way to eradicate the problem, in my view, is to turn the tables on them and increasingly make them the losers of our world. In the case of bullying, we are often told to turn the other cheek and ignore the disordered behavior of a person or persons who have made it their mission to destroy us. Unfortunately, turning the other cheek by ignoring the bullying behavior does not work in war and it will never work in our schools and workplaces where bully type personalities have declared war on their targets. In civilized environments, we have the luxury of expecting respectful behavior directed towards us when we respect other people. Bullies and the group think of the mob that they instill in their enablers and bystanders are not civilized. They are war mongers in every sense of the word but unlike an official declaration of war, they plan their cowardly war in secret behind the closed doors of a bathroom or board room. Strategies of a civilized society like turn the other cheek do not work in war and they will not work in combating the bullies and mobs of our schools and workplaces. Different strategies are required if the target of a bullying/mobbing campaign wants to survive the ordeal emotionally, mentally and financially whole. Who better to supply us with the strategies of winning a war than the experts in war? Along with some preventive strategies that build inner confidence, I have included in this book some strategies used by the U.S. Army and put them in the context of a workplace whose values and mission have been supplanted by amoral people who have personal agendas they are willing to carry out by any and all means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that as many as 37% of American workers have experienced workplace abuse at some time in their working lives. Mobbing, a form of abuse in which individuals, groups, or organizations target a single person for ridicule, humiliation, and removal from the workplace, can lead to deteriorating physical and mental health, violence, and even suicide. Overcoming Mobbing is an informative, comprehensive guidebook written for the victims of mobbing and their families. In an engaging and reader-friendly style, mobbing experts Maureen Duffy and Len Sperry help readers to make sense of the experience and mobilize resources for recovery. The authors distinguish mobbing from bullying-in that it takes place within organizational or institutional settings-and demonstrate how mobbing is not about the occasional negative experience at work; rather, mobbing involves ongoing negative acts, both overt and covert, that over time erode workers' confidence in themselves and in their workplaces. Demystifying the experience of mobbing through the use of examples and case studies, Overcoming Mobbing provides effective strategies for recovery from mobbing as well as for prevention. More than a simple self-help book, this guide offers a detailed presentation of the causes and consequences of mobbing, helps readers avoid falling into the trap of misplacing blame, and holds organizations at the center of responsibility for preventing this devastating type of abuse. In addition to those who have experienced mobbing, this book is an invaluable resource for workplace managers and human resources personnel who wish to prevent or reverse mobbing within their own professional settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection discusses the concept of fraternity and examines the issue of its role in law. Since the end of World War II, fraternity has been cited in several national constitutional charters, in addition to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But is there space for fraternity in law? The contributions to this book form an ideal “bridge” between the past and present to trace the different pathways taken to address the meaning of fraternity, and to identify its possible legal relevance. The book lays out paths that have placed fraternity in varied and challenging legal contexts in an age of globalization and conflict, where the multiplicity of national and supranational sources of law seems to show its inadequacy to govern complexity, and coexistence between diversities that appear irreconcilable. The purpose is not to recover fraternity as a forgotten principle, but to reimagine it today to address the aim and force of law within a plurality of cultures. The analysis considers a possible universal dimension that models unity within diversity, and aspires to serve as a prologue to a transition from research to dialogue between different legal systems and traditions. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Comparative Law, Legal History and Legal Philosophy.

Book excerpt: This enlightening book brings together the work of gender and forestry specialists from various backgrounds and fields of research and action to analyse global gender conditions as related to forests. Using a variety of methods and approaches, they build on a spectrum of theoretical perspectives to bring depth and breadth to the relevant issues and address timely and under-studied themes. Focusing particularly on tropical forests, the book presents both local case studies and global comparative studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as the US and Europe. The studies range from personal histories of elderly American women’s attitudes toward conservation, to a combined qualitative / quantitative international comparative study on REDD+, to a longitudinal examination of oil palm and gender roles over time in Kalimantan. Issues are examined across scales, from the household to the nation state and the global arena; and reach back to the past to inform present and future considerations. The collection will be of relevance to academics, researchers, policy makers and advocates with different levels of familiarity with gender issues in the field of forestry.

Until recently, higher education in the UK has largely failed to recognise gender-based violence (GBV) on campus, but following the UK government task force set up in 2015, universities are becoming more aware of the issue. And recent cases in the media about the sexualised abuse of power in institutions such as universities, Parliament and Hollywood highlight the prevalence and damaging impact of GBV. In this book, academics and practitioners provide the first in-depth overview of research and practice in GBV in universities. They set out the international context of ideologies, politics and institutional structures that underlie responses to GBV in elsewhere in Europe, in the US, and in Australia, and consider the implications of implementing related policy and practice. Presenting examples of innovative British approaches to engagement with the issue, the book also considers UK, EU and UN legislation to give an international perspective, making it of direct use to discussions of ‘what works’ in preventing GBV.
