Book excerpt: Project 0-4517 was established to summarize the results from the Lufkin experiment on US 59 and to develop statewide guidelines on how to select rehabilitation strategies for jointed concrete pavements (JCP). This year 1 report reviews the performance of the six experimental sections on US 59 and makes recommendations for statewide implementation. The best performing section in Lufkin was the flexible base overlay, which involved placing high-quality crushed limestone directly over the JCP followed by an underseal and thin asphalt overlay. This was also one of the least expensive treatments used in the experiment. The large stone mix also gave good performance, but the crack and seat and full-depth repair techniques did not perform well. A forensic investigation was conducted to attempt to explain the variation in treatment performance. To complement the Lufkin results, a review is also presented of the performance of other JCP rehabilitation techniques recently evaluated by TxDOT districts. An evaluation of crack retarding asphalt layers (Strata(R)), grid layers (GlasGrid(R)) and slab fracturing techniques is also included in the report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements. The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined. The desired performance and behaviour parameters are identified. Next, appropriate materials are outlined and the most suitable concrete proportions determined. The design can be completed, and then the necessary construction steps for translating the design into a durable facility are carried out. Although the focus reflects highways as the most common application, special features of airport, industrial, and light duty pavements are also addressed. Use is made of modeling and performance tools such as HIPERPAV and LTPP to illustrate behavior and performance, along with some case studies. As concrete pavements are more complex than they seem, and the costs of mistakes or of over-design can be high, this is a valuable book for engineers in both the public and private sectors.

This implies a thorough understanding of materials behaviour, their appropriate use in the continuously changing environment, and implementation of constantly improved technologies and methodologies. Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements VII contains more than 100 contributions that were presented at the 7th International Conference ‘Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements’ (7ICONFBMP, Thessaloniki, Greece 12-14 June 2019). The papers cover a wide range of topics: - Bituminous binders - Aggregates, unbound layers and subgrade - Bituminous mixtures (Hot, Warm and Cold) - Pavements (Design, Construction, Maintenance, Sustainability, Energy and environment consideration) - Pavement management - Pavement recycling - Geosynthetics - Pavement assessment, surface characteristics and safety - Posters Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements VII reflects recent advances in highway materials technology and pavement engineering, and will be of interest to academics and professionals interested or involved in these areas.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of special interest to pavement engineers and pavement construction and maintenance personnel responsible for portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement joints. Still pertinent information from NCHRP Synthesis 19 (1973), as well as new or updated information in the areas of joint design, construction, and maintenance are included. This report of the Transportation Research Board records the state of the practice with respect to the design, construction, and maintenance of PCC pavement joints. In addition, information on joint materials and sealing, the control of water on and in pavements, and the evaluation of pavement joint performance is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production use of precast concrete pavement (PCP) has come a long way over the last 15 years. The technology is gaining wider acceptance in the U.S. for rapid repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements as well as for heavily trafficked asphalt concrete pavements and intersections. Several U.S. highway agencies, including Caltrans, Illinois Tollway, and the New Jersey, New York, and Utah State Departments of Transportation, have implemented the PCP technology, and other agencies have constructed demonstration projects. In the U.S., the PCP technology is being used on concrete pavements for intermittent repairs (full-depth joint repairs or full panel replacement) and for continuous applications (longer length/wider area rehabilitation) with service life expectations of at least 20 years for intermittent repairs and at least 40 years for continuous applications, without significant future corrective treatment. The use of PCP on asphalt pavements includes the replacement of ramps, intersections and bus pads. The Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Project R05 was conducted from 2008 to 2012 to develop technical information and guidelines that would encourage the rapid and successful adoption of PCP technology. In 2013, the SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP) was created to help State DOTs, metropolitan planning organizations, and other interested organizations deploy SHRP2-developed products to deliver more efficient, costeffective solutions to meet the complex challenges facing transportation agencies. On March 28, 2014, the Federal Highway Administration—in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials—announced the selection of several transportation agencies receiving implementation and technical assistance awards as part of round 3 of the SHRP2 IAP. The Texas Department of Transportation, one of the agencies selected as a lead adopter of Project R05 technology, received an award of 300,000 [dollars] to help offset the cost of constructing a PCP project. This case study report provides details of the 2016 PCP use for rehabilitation of a distressed asphalt concrete pavement at the intersection of Route 97 and Route 72 in McMullen/LaSalle County, Texas.
