Book excerpt: Verbal memory, verbal working memory, processing speed and visual attention have been reported to be enhanced in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, as compared with the menstrual phase. However, many women report diminished cognitive abilities in the luteal phase, as compared with other phases of the menstrual cycle. This study attempted to examine the nature of the apparent discrepancy between cognitive functioning and self reported cognitive efficacy. Participants completed a battery of neuropsychological measures in each phase of the menstrual cycle and were asked to rate their perceived efficacy, both before and after performing each task. Male participants were included as a control group. Accuracy of perceived efficacy was calculated as the difference between efficacy ratings and actual performance. Results failed to replicate findings of cognitive facilitation in the luteal phase, and failed to find reliable differences in pre or postdiction accuracy between phase or sex.

Book excerpt: This book originated in a symposium that was held at the London Conference of the British Psychological Society (BPS) in December 1988. The fact that the various contributors were able to assemble at all was very much due to the kind generosity of the Scientific Affairs Board of the BPS, which had made resources available from its Initiatives Fund to enable Barbara Sommer to travel to the United Kingdom to participate in the event. The broad continuity among the contributions to this symposium in terms of their underlying themes led us to the view that a single volume consisting of original papers by those concerned would be a timely contri bution to the research literature, not simply on menstruation and cognitive performance but more generally on the nature of female psychology. This was confirmed by a clear sense that in their different ways, the individual researchers involved were achieving 'genuine conceptual, theoretical, and empirical progress in this area and were generating ideas and findings that accorded well with changing views of women in psychology and cognate disciplines. We hope that the various chapters in this book convey some sense of this intellectual progress and development. JOHN T. E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an up-to-date view of menstruation from a feminist perspective. Despite the fact that the menstrual cycle is an integral part of women's lives, menstruation is often viewed as an illness or problem. Lifting the Curse of Menstruation answers essential questions about the occurence of menstruationfrom menarch to menopauseand its effects on women's lives. Experts examine the relationship of menstruation to cognitive competence and psychophysiological response, premenstrual syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, dysmenorrhea, and the relationship between psychopathology and the menstrual cycle. The contributors also discuss how menstrual cycle research has been tainted by sexism and assumptions of biological determinism, offering insightful suggestions on how future research can become more sophisticated, reliable, and valid. Lifting the Curse of Menstruation shatters myths and misconceptions, providing an enormous body of knowledge about the menstrual cycle that will help women to better understand their bodies and enable health care professinals to provide better informed, higher quality care.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of sex hormones on non-reproductive behavior and cognitive abilities in younger women. The current project included the examination of the effects of estrogen on cognitive performance during the midluteal and menses phase of menstruation. Specifically, we (a) examined whether oral contraceptives affect cognitive performance and depressive symptomology during these two phases (b) examined whether differences in performance levels occur between women who use oral contraceptives and women who take a natural course of menstruation, and (c) whether other cognitive functions, such as memory, information processing, and mood are affected by estrogen during both phases of menses. The researchers used a repeated measures design to test younger women (n=6 women who used some form of hormonal influence, n=31 women who do not use any method of hormonal influence) with a normal functioning menstrual cycle (28-32 days) using Vandenberg's Mental Rotation Task, the Stroop, the Stress Arousal Checklist, the California Verbal Learning Test, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale during both phases of menstruation. A multivariate analyses of variance was conducted and showed a main effect in assessment measures, however we found no main effect in phase or the interaction of assessment and phase. A paired samples t-test showed a marginally significant result with the stress arousal checklist, specifically negative arousal. This study seems to imply that neither the phase of estrogen in women, nor the level of estrogen can be directly linked to cognitive performance.
Book Synopsis The Menstrual Cycle by : Anne Walker
Download or read book The Menstrual Cycle written by Anne Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Walker shows that women are neither the victims of raging hormonal fluctuations nor entirely unaffected by them. Unlike most previous publications that focus on menstruation (a part of the cycle), The Menstrual Cycle presents a well researched study of the entire menstrual cycle and its relationship to women's lives. Women's own experiences in different cultures are contrasted with medical textbook descriptions and the "normal" is found to be rather elusive. This book will be read by discourse analysts, doctors, nurses and any woman who has felt curious about her menstrual cycle and its possible effects.

Book Synopsis Cognitive Functioning and Physical Activity During Menopause by : Greer Alicia Raggio

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Cognitive problems such as forgetfulness, concentration difficulty, and inattention are commonly reported among women in or around the menopause transition. However, objective neurocognitive data do not consistently corroborate subjective cognitive complaints, nor do they effectively distinguish women in different reproductive stages. Further assessments must be conducted to determine the specific cognitive changes occurring around the menopause transition in comparison to other reproductive stages (e.g., late postmenopause). Furthermore, non-pharmacological methods for addressing reported cognitive difficulties should be explored. Aims: The primary study aim (Aim 1) was to evaluate cross-sectional differences in subjective and objective cognitive function among women in perimenopause (irregular menstruation to 1 year after the final menstrual period), early postmenopause (1-5 years after the final menstrual period) and late menopause (> 5 years after the final menstrual period). The secondary aim (Aim 2) was to compare changes in cognitive function and physical activity among women who completed a six-month physical activity intervention. Hypotheses: It was hypothesized that women in perimenopause would score lower on tests of attention and working memory than women in postmenopause. It was also hypothesized that increases in physical activity would be significantly associated with improvements on attention and working memory tasks. Procedure: Forty-five women age 40 to 63 (mean age = 53.6 years) were recruited for a six-month, group-based intervention designed to help midlife women increase sustained aerobic activity. Neurocognitive and physical activity assessments occurred at baseline and 6 months. Participants were given weekly exercise prescriptions, gradually working toward 250 minutes of MVPA per week. Measures: The following neurocognitive domains were evaluated using clinician-administered tests: Global cognition (MoCA) and intelligence (WTAR), attention and working memory (Letter N-Back computer test; Digit Span), verbal learning and memory (Selective Reminding Test), verbal fluency (COWA), and executive function (Trails A and B). Physical activity was quantified by seven-day ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer readings. Statistical Analyses: Regression and ANOVA tests were performed (using the GLM procedure in SPSS), in addition to Pearson's r correlations. Results: At baseline, women in early postmenopause showed significantly worse verbal memory performance than women in perimenopause or late postmenopause (p
Book Synopsis The Neuropsychological Effects of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder by : Fabiana V. Bracho
Download or read book The Neuropsychological Effects of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder written by Fabiana V. Bracho and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is characterized by cyclical mood changes resulting in clinically significant distress and functional impairment. Studies on the neuropsychological effects of PMDD are inconsistent and still lacking. The aim of the current paper is to provide a narrative review of studies investigating cognitive functioning in association with the menstrual cycle in biological females, with a focus on studies that have investigated cognitive functioning across the menstrual cycle in females with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Results revealed women with PMDD do suffer from some cognitive changes during the luteal phase including attention and working memory, executive functioning, and emotional regulation; however, there is a lack of consistent findings regarding whether the cognitive vulnerabilities experienced during the luteal phase may be attributed to negative psychological symptoms or be a more direct effect of hormonal dysregulation or sensitivity. Further research is warranted in the matter.

Book Synopsis Cognition, Language and Aging by : Heather Harris Wright
Download or read book Cognition, Language and Aging written by Heather Harris Wright and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age-related changes in cognitive and language functions have been extensively researched over the past half-century. The older adult represents a unique population for studying cognition and language because of the many challenges that are presented with investigating this population, including individual differences in education, life experiences, health issues, social identity, as well as gender. The purpose of this book is to provide an advanced text that considers these unique challenges and assembles in one source current information regarding (a) language in the aging population and (b) current theories accounting for age-related changes in language function. A thoughtful and comprehensive review of current research spanning different disciplines that study aging will achieve this purpose. Such disciplines include linguistics, psychology, sociolinguistics, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, and communication sciences. As of January 2019, this e-book is freely available, thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched.
