Book excerpt: Extended flute techniques include many different ways of producing non-traditional sonorities and effects on the flute and have been an important compositional staple of Avant-garde composers in the twentieth century. While many of these techniques developed exclusively within the Western tradition, many others derived from influence of non-Western flute traditions. Three East-Asian composers, Isang Yun (1917-1995), Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), and Kazuo Fukushima (b.1930), contributed to this performance practice style by drawing from the flute traditions of their cultures. By focusing on the unaccompanied solo flute works of these three composers, this document will demonstrate many of the important applications of extended flute techniques in the twentieth century present their East-Asian influences and provide performance suggestions for this repertoire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to the sound practices of bands and musicians such as the Asian Dub Foundation or M.I.A., and spanning three decades of South Asian dance music production in the UK, Transcultural Sound Practices zooms in on the concrete sonic techniques and narrative strategies in South Asian dance music and investigates sound as part of a wider assemblage of cultural technologies, politics and practices. Carla J. Maier investigates how sounds from Hindi film music tunes or bhangra tracks have been sampled, cut, looped and manipulated, thus challenging and complicating the cultural politics of sonic production. Rather than conceiving of music as a representation of fixed cultures, this book engages in a study of music that disrupts the ways in which ethnicity has been written into sound and investigates how transcultural sound practices generate new ways of thinking about culture.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Extended techniques play an important role in flute repertoire today, as composers continue to explore the possibilities of the instrument in ways not previously done before the mid-twentieth century. Pioneers of flute extended techniques, including Edgard Varése, Luciano Berio, and Robert Dick, have all played an important role in the progression of flute repertoire leading into the twenty-first century. Ian Clarke, a British flutist and composer, uses extended techniques as a vital element in his compositions, and has gained a great deal of attention for his breadth of work, including one of his more recent compositions, Hatching Aliens . First published in 2010, this work utilizes a vast amount of extended techniques, all of which contribute to the eerie and mysterious qualities of this programmatic composition for flute and piano. This project report studies the notation and production of extended techniques and how Clarke incorporates them into his composition, Hatching Aliens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In order for a flute player to remain employed today, they must be well versed in all aspects of their instrument. This includes the traditional teachings of scales, tone development, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and the standard repertoires as well as improvisation and transposition on a consistent basis, various genres of contemporary music, and a wide range of extended flute techniques--to include flute beatboxing. This project report explores the reasons why extended flute techniques and improvisation may be the vehicle to producing a more well-rounded musician. By becoming a well-rounded musician, the flute player can open up many new doors and possibly find that an alternate performance option may be more enjoyable then the path that they originally chose, or in the meantime, find a new means of income while they wait for the coveted orchestra position. This project report includes a biographies for Robert Dick and Greg Pattillo, analyses of a few measures of Robert Dick's piece Fish Are Jumping, and a breakdown of Greg Pattillo's "Boots, Kats" exercise--to include a reference guide for beginning beatboxing (whether with a flute or without).

Fingering and trill charts are provided for flutes of up to 13 keys. The progressive and thoughtful organization of this method makes it useful to teachers of any model of transverse flute--useful even with beginning students." --The Flute Network Jean-Louis Tulou's 1855 method for playing the pre-Boehm wooden flute and an excellent source of early nineteenth-century French performance practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Peter Gabriel fronted progressive rock band Genesis, from the late 1960s until the mid 1970s, journalists and academics alike have noted the importance of Gabriel's contribution to popular music. His influence became especially significant when he embarked on a solo career in the late 1970s. Gabriel secured his place in the annals of popular music history through his poignant recordings, innovative music videos, groundbreaking live performances, the establishment of WOMAD (the World of Music and Dance) and the Real World record label (as a forum for musicians from around the world to be heard, recorded and promoted) and for his political agenda (including links to a variety of political initiatives including the Artists Against Apartheid Project, Amnesty International and the Human Rights Now tour). In addition, Gabriel is known as a sensitive, articulate and critical performer whose music reflects an innate curiosity and deep intellectual commitment. This collection documents and critically explores the most central themes found in Gabriel's work. These are divided into three important conceptual areas arising from Gabriel's activity as a songwriter and recording artist, performer and activist: 'Identity and Representation', 'Politics and Power' and 'Production and Performance'.
