Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upflow anaerobic packed bed biofilter was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in treating Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). Three reactors with total volumes of 52, 52 and 290 litres and packed with 1/2, 1 and 1 inch rings were evaluated. The results shows a COD removal ranging from 66% to 94% and an SS removal ranging from 77 to 94% depending on the loading rate. Retention times used were 5 and 10 days and high removal rate was still possible at the low retention time. Start up for the reactor is within one month and growth of the biomass probably required more than two months. The removal of nutrient were also assessed. [Authors' abstract].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system was shown to be very effective in treating the POME. At a hydraulic retention time of 4.5 days, the 2 phase biofilter reactors were shown to remove the organic by 95% and 91% for BOD and COD respectively. The solids removal for the 2 phase process was shown to be very high with a removal of 97%, in contrast to the single phase system where the COD and TSS removal were only 84 and 95% respectively. The effect of nutrient addition to improve the biofilter process was also presented. The 2 phase biofilter showed increase performance in BOD removal after 3 days of dosing the multi-nutrient, Biologic SR2. A 2% improvement in the solid destruction was experienced after a short period of 5 days.

Book excerpt: Many industrial processes use water as a solvent and therefore produce wastewater containing chemicals from that process. The amounts of these chemicals and the types will vary hugely depending on the industry and the processes running and may include things that are hazardous to health or the environment. This makes the treatment of industrial wastewater both extremely important and highly complex. One route for industrial wastewater treatment is the use of bioreactors. Biological Treatment of Industrial Wastewater presents a comprehensive overview of the latest advances and trends in the use of bioreactors for treating industrial wastewater. Several different types of bioreactor and their applications are discussed, alongside trends and considerations important in designing bioreactors. Bringing together a wealth of different approaches and voices this book will be a useful resource for anyone working in water treatment or looking at how industrial processes can be made more environmentally friendly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pH of the biofilter liquor remained relatively stable, between 6.9 to 7.5, during the entire operation. Biofilter failure occurred at 0.83 day HRT, indicated by a drop of COD removal efficiency to 20.1%. The high methane yield of 0.32 L/g COD removed, stable pH, together with the low volatile fatty acid content (averaging 24.4 and 55.0 mg/L of ethanoic and propanoic acids respectively), suggested that failure was not due to "souring" of the biofilter. The primary cause of failure was attributed to the gradual washout of attached biomass. Failure resulted in the accumulation of 2-EHA, which averaged 4407 mg/L over this period, and which may have been inhibitory to the bacterial consortium. [Authors' abstract].

This is due to the realization that biogas capture and utilization has great potential in controlling global warming. By capturing biogas wherever it is formed, we not only tap a source of clean energy, but we also prevent the escape of methane to the atmosphere. Given that methane has 25 times greater global warming potential than CO2, methane capture through biogas energy in this manner can contribute substantially towards global warming control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anaerobic process is considered to be a sustainable technology for organic waste treatment mainly due to its lower energy consumption and production of residual solids coupled with the prospect of energy recovery from the biogas generated. However, the anaerobic process cannot be seen as providing the ‘complete’ solution as its treated effluents would typically not meet the desired discharge limits in terms of residual carbon, nutrients and pathogens. This has given impetus to subsequent post treatment in order to meet the environmental legislations and protect the receiving water bodies and environment. This book discusses anaerobic treatment from the perspective of organic wastes and wastewaters (municipal and industrial) followed by various post-treatment options for anaerobic effluent polishing and resource recovery. Coverage will also be from the perspective of future trends and thoughts on anaerobic technologies being able to support meeting the increasingly stringent disposal standards. The resource recovery angle is particularly interesting as this can arguably help achieve the circular economy. It is intended the information can be used to identify appropriate solutions for anaerobic effluent treatment and possible alternative approaches to the commonly applied post-treatment techniques. The succeeding discussion is intended to lead on to identification of opportunities for further research and development. This book can be used as a standard reference book and textbook in universities for Master and Doctoral students. The academic community relevant to the subject, namely faculty, researchers, scientists, and practicing engineers, will find the book both informative and as a useful source of successful case studies.
