Book excerpt: An experimental study has been made of an ion-cyclotron-wave apparatus operated in the RF-sustained mode, that is, a mode in which the Stix RF coil both propagates the waves and maintains the plasma. Problems associated with this method of operation are presented. Some factors that are important to the coupling of RF power are noted. In general, the wave propagation and wave damping data agree with theory. Some irregularities in wave fields are observed. Maximum ion temperature is 870 eV at a density of five times 10 to the 12th power cu cm and RF power of 90 kW. Coupling efficiency is 70 percent.

However, because of the multiple inherent challenges,Äîsuch as matching robustness, antenna design, wave coupling efficiency, wave propagation, wave absorption, and plasma surface interactions due to radiofrequency (RF) sheath excitation,ÄîICRF is often one of the most complex heating systems to implement successfully. This chapter provides a brief introduction of these challenges and their respective underlying physics, together with examples of both simulations and experimental results from various tokamaks around the world. Finally, ICRF advantages and applications on present and future devices and perspectives of technological solutions are discussed and summarized.

Book excerpt: Radio frequency (rf) waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) are widely used for heating fusion plasmas. In a multi-ion-species plasma, the launched fast waves convert to ion cyclotron waves and ion Bernstein waves in the vicinity of the two-ion hybrid resonance between the cyclotron resonances. The mode converted waves are of interest as actuators to optimize plasma performance through current drive and flow drive. Numerical simulations are essential to describe these processes accurately in a realistic tokamak geometry, and it is important that these simulation codes be validated against experiment. The phase contrast imaging (PCI) technique has been used on Alcator C-Mod to measure directly the rf waves. The measurements were compared to predictions of full-wave simulations using a synthetic diagnostic method. The measured mode converted wave intensity was found to be a factor of ~50 weaker than what was expected from the linear wave theory in a strong mode conversion regime. The agreement improved when the wave intensity was weaker, which is a possible indication of nonlinear wave physics being involved.
