Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various aspects of geotechnical earthquake engineering and soil dynamics are highlighted in this all-inclusive book. The current progress in the field of earthquake engineering has been discussed with primary focus on the seismic safety of dams and underground monuments, Bryan's effect, and the mitigation plans against landslide and fire whirlwind. The book discusses various interesting researches that have been contributed by researchers and experts from many countries. The researches presented in this book will be helpful for graduates, researchers and scientists working in these areas of structural and earthquake engineering. It will also be of significance to civil engineers working on building and reconstruction of structures such as dams, buildings, roads and others.
Book Synopsis Development of an NCHRP Report 350 TL-3 New Jersey Shape 50-inch Portable Concrete Barrier by : Chuck A. Plaxico
Download or read book Development of an NCHRP Report 350 TL-3 New Jersey Shape 50-inch Portable Concrete Barrier written by Chuck A. Plaxico and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For roadside work-zones in areas that have opposing traffic flow, safety is enhanced if the temporary barriers incorporate a "glare-shield" that blocks headlight glare from opposing traffic. Currently-available 32-inch portable concrete barriers require the use of an add-on glare shield attached to the top of the barrier. The add-on glare shields are an extra expense and complicate barrier set-up and handling. An alternative solution was to develop a 50-inch high portable concrete barrier which is tall enough to serve as its own glare-shield. Finite element analysis was used to investigate various barrier shapes and connection schemes to identify a successful crashworthy design that would meet requirments of NCHRP Report 350 Test level 3. A 50-inch portable concrete barrier design was developed based on the results of the finite element analyses and was crash tested at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio. The system successfully met all safety criteria of NCHRP Report 350 and has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration for use on the National Highway System as a test level 3 device.

Book Synopsis Water Sensitivity of Asphalt-aggregate Mixes by : Ronald L. Terrel
Download or read book Water Sensitivity of Asphalt-aggregate Mixes written by Ronald L. Terrel and published by National Research Council. This book was released on 1994 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this report was conducted to identify the important factors influencing the water sensitivity of asphalt paving mixtures, and to develop a test method to evaluate water sensitivity of asphalt concrete mixtures for mix design. The test method was to be performance related. A review of current procedures revealed that no single method was suitable for evaluation and related to field performance. Based on a hypothesis that air voids in the mixture may be the major source and cause of water damage, a test system was developed to evaluate the major factors that influence water sensitivity. The Environmental Conditioning System (ECS) was used to develop a test procedure that includes specimen preparation; measurement of permeability using air, water, or both; vacuum wetting; cycling at various temperatures; and continuous repeated loading while monitoring resilient modulus after each conditioning cycle.
