Book excerpt: This project is founded on the idea that assessment, like instruction, in high school science should be focuses on not only rigorous content, but also practical laboratory skills and problem solving, in order to increase motivation and engagement while still preparing students for difficult college-level work. Compared to international peers, relatively few students in the United States pursue scientific majors and careers, and American students consistently underperform on standardized tests in the area of science. Inquiry and project-based learning have been heavily promoted as increasing engagement and problem-solving skills in secondary science, but some research at the university level indicated that greater freedom and less content instruction puts students at a disadvantage in difficult college courses. This project focuses on developing physical science performance assessments aligned to next generation science standards learning targets in order to assess laboratory skills as well as scientific knowledge in a practical setting. This project will be initially implemented in my own classroom and judged for its effectiveness in assessing knowledge and skill, as well as motivating students.
