Today, there is hardly any professional, particularly in engineering, that has not been the user of such a network. This proliferation requires the thorough understanding of the behavior of networks by those who are responsible for their operation as well as by those whose task it is to design such networks. This is probably the reason for the large number of books, monographs, and articles treating relevant issues, problems, and solutions in this field. Among all computer network architectures, those based on broadcast mul tiple access channels stand out in their uniqueness. These networks appear naturally in environments requiring user mobility where the use of any fixed wiring is impossible and a wireless channel is the only available option. Because of their desirable characteristics multiple access networks are now used even in environments where a wired point-to-point network could have been installed. The understanding of the operation of multiple access network through their performance analysis is the focus of this book.

Book excerpt: Broadcast media, such as satellite, ground radio, and multipoint cable channels, can easily provide full connectivity for communication among geographically distributed users. One of the most important problems in the design of networks (referred to as packet broadcast networks) that can take practical advantage of broadcast channels is how to achieve efficient sharing of a single common channel. Many multiple access protocols, or algorithms, for packet broadcast networks have been proposed, and much work has been done on the performance evaluation of the protocols. A variety of techniques have been used to analyze the performance; however, this is the first book to provide a unified approach to the performance evaluation problem by means of an approximate analytical technique called equilibrium point analysis. Two types of packet broadcast networks - satellite networks and local area networks are considered, and eight multiple access protocols are studied and their performance analyzed in terms of throughput and average message delay. Contents Part I: Fundamentals - Multiple Access Protocols and Performance - Equilibrium Point Analysis - Part II: Satellite Networks - S-ALOHA - R-ALOHA - ALOHA-Reservation - TDMAReservation - SRUC - TDMA - Performance Comparisons of the Protocols for Satellite Networks - Part III: Local Area Networks - Buffered CSMACD - BRAM Performance Analysis of Multiple Access Protocols is included in the Computer Systems Series, Research Reports and Notes, edited by Herb Schwetman.

Book excerpt: With the rapidly increasing penetration of laptop computers and mobile phones, which are primarily used by mobile users to access Internet s- vices like e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) access, support of Internet services in a mobile environment is an emerging requirement. Wireless n- works have been used for communication among fully distributed users in a multimedia environment that has the needs to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic with excellent reliability and service quality. To satisfy the huge wireless multimedia service demand and improve the system performance, efficient channel access methods and analytical methods must be provided. In this way very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behavior of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, can be constructed. Most of these system models are discrete-time queueing systems. Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.

Book excerpt: The design and development of cost-effective mobile broadband wireless access networks is a key challenge for many mobile network operators. The over-dimensioning or under-dimensioning of an access network results in both additional costs and customer dissatisfaction. Thushara Weerawardane introduces new transport technologies and features for High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Using advanced scientific methods, he proposes new adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms, then defends them with highly-developed analytical models derived from Markov chains. For faster analysis, compared to long-lasting detailed simulations, these models provide optimum network performance and ensure reliable quality standards for end users during transport network congestion. Further, the author investigates and analyzes LTE transport network performance by introducing novel traffic differentiation models and buffer management techniques during intra-LTE handovers.

Book excerpt: Communication Networking is a comprehensive, effectively organized introduction to the realities of communication network engineering. Written for both the workplace and the classroom, this book lays the foundation and provides the answers required for building an efficient, state-of-the-art network—one that can expand to meet growing demand and evolve to capitalize on coming technological advances. It focuses on the three building blocks out of which a communication network is constructed: multiplexing, switching, and routing. The discussions are based on the viewpoint that communication networking is about efficient resource sharing. The progression is natural: the book begins with individual physical links and proceeds to their combination in a network. The approach is analytical: discussion is driven by mathematical analyses of and solutions to specific engineering problems. Fundamental concepts are explained in detail and design issues are placed in context through real world examples from current technologies. The text offers in-depth coverage of many current topics, including network calculus with deterministically-constrained traffic; congestion control for elastic traffic; packet switch queuing; switching architectures; virtual path routing; and routing for quality of service. It also includes more than 200 hands-on exercises and class-tested problems, dozens of schematic figures, a review of key mathematical concepts, and a glossary. This book will be of interest to networking professionals whose work is primarily architecture definition and implementation, i.e., network engineers and designers at telecom companies, industrial research labs, etc. It will also appeal to final year undergrad and first year graduate students in EE, CE, and CS programs. - Systematically uses mathematical models and analyses to drive the development of a practical understanding of core network engineering problems. - Provides in-depth coverage of many current topics, including network calculus with deterministically-constrained traffic, congestion control for elastic traffic, packet switch queuing, switching architectures, virtual path routing, and routing for quality of service. - Includes over 200 hands-on exercises and class-tested problems, dozens of schematic figures, a review of key mathematical concepts, and a glossary.
