Book excerpt: "With the increasing availability of wireless networks, the continuous development of new wireless technologies and recent technological advancements in the area of unmanned aerial systems, it is essential to optimize the users' connection to meet the increased demands in terms of throughput and delay. In conventional infrastructure-based networks, the devices are connected to a central entity that is responsible for coordinating the network. Although infrastructure networks may be available in many situations, infrastructure-less or ad-hoc networks are necessary in situations where infrastructure-based networks are difficult to deploy (e.g., disaster or rural areas) or are inefficient to support connectivity. Therefore analyzing, optimizing, and selecting the best connection, whether it is through an existing infrastructure or an ad-hoc network, is vital for optimizing the users' performance and meeting the quality of service (QoS) requirements. My dissertation examines various approaches to optimize network connectivity for both wireless sensor networks and for mobile users. For example, I have used real elephants' movement data and a multi-sink extension to the epidemic routing with vaccine protocol in Network Simulator (ns-3) to analyze the performance ofWi-Fi infrastructure mode and multi-hopWi-Fi ad-hoc mode in a real life animal tracking sensor network application called JumboNet. Based on simulation results, Wi-Fi adhoc mode with epidemic routing outperforms infrastructure mode Wi-Fi in terms of packet delivery ratio. On the other handWi-Fi in infrastructure mode results in a lower delay and energy consumption per packet with the cost of a lower number of delivered packets. Additionally, I developed an Android application that scans and collects information about the accessibility, quality and attributes of Wi-Fi access points, and cellular base stations. Moreover, the application measures the throughput and delay of the infrastructure networks. Based on the collected data, about 10% of the scanned locations have only 0-2 Wi-Fi access points (APs), and for more than 20% of the locations, all the available APs are private and inaccessible due to security restrictions. Using an ad-hoc network can allow devices that do not have a direct access to the infrastructure network to be connected through other devices that do have access to the Wi-Fi APs. In this regard, I developed an Android application that connects a Wi-Fi Direct ad-hoc network to the Internet via a gateway node that is connected to an infrastructure network. The application can be used to evaluate the impact of extending access to the Internet to devices that do not have direct access. Moreover, based on energy consumption models for LTE, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, I evaluated the tradeoffs between throughput, delay, and energy consumption of infrastructure and multi-hop ad-hoc networks. Based on the collected data, the throughput of infrastructure and multihop ad-hoc networks increases with increasing data size. Furthermore,Wi-Fi Direct multi-hop ad-hoc networks withWi-Fi connection from the gateway node are more energy efficient when uploading and downloading data compared with a direct cellular connection in some cases. Furthermore, I investigated the 3D placement problem for multiple unmanned aerial vehicles base stations (UAV-BSs) that maximizes the number of covered users with the same as well as with different QoS requirements. First, I presented a mathematical formulation of the multiple UAV-BSs placement problem, and showed that it is a non-convex optimization problem. Then, I proposed two heuristic algorithms, and I showed that for users with the same as well as with different QoS requirements, the proposed algorithms achieve near optimal performance and outperform the Linear Approximation (LA) state-of-the-art algorithm in terms of the average number of covered users and execution time. Finally, I explored the 3D placement problem for multiple UAV-BSs that maximizes the number of covered ground users both with and without support of multi-hop ad hoc ground networks. First, I presented a mathematical formulation of the single UAV-BS placement problem, then I proposed a heuristic algorithm that maximizes the number of directly and indirectly covered ground users considering users with the same as well as with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Simulation results show the merits of utilizing the multi-hop capabilities of the ground users in terms of reducing the number of UAV-BSs required to cover the users. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the design, analysis, and optimization of infrastructurebased, aerial and multi-hop ad-hoc networks in various applications ranging from WSNs to mobile networks. Furthermore, these contributions will give new insights to the design of next generation wireless networks that are able to meet the users' demands and QoS requirements."--Pages x-xii.

Book excerpt: Multihop mobile wireless networks is a subject of intense research interest for next generation wireless systems. As we move towards fourth generation (4G) networks, high data-rates of the order of 100 Mbps can be achieved only over short distances. A multihop network has smaller transmission distance as compared to an equivalent single-hop network. This enables the radio terminals that are spatially well-separated from each other to reuse the same resources when the resulting interferences are not too severe. In this dissertation, the multihop network design is studied for two different kinds of systems: multihop ad hoc network and multihop hybrid cellular network. In the first part of the thesis work, a multihop ad hoc network is analyzed in detail and the system capacity is computed. However, the calculation of optimal resource allocation that would maximize the system capacity is found to be an NP-hard problem. Considering this complexity, a random data hopping technique has been proposed over a time-slot (TS) partitioned system in order to improve the system capacity of the network. It has been found that the granularity of the TS(s) can be increased by reducing the duration of each TS. Significantly, applying the random data hoping technique over the TS partitioned system results in an increase in the system capacity without any additional increase in the computational complexity. In the second part of the thesis work, a multihop hybrid cellular network is studied. It is known that optimal resource allocation in a multihop cellular network is again a NP-hard problem. A novel cluster-based design is proposed in this work for a 2-hop cellular network, whereby, two pairs communicate simultaneously in every hexagonal cell, at any time instant. Such a cluster-based 2-hop design provides an increase in the spatial resource reuse and hence results in a much higher system capacity as compared to three standard benchmark algorithms for 2-hop cellular networks.

In omni-directional antenna based solutions, the use of the RTS/CTS mechanism does not completely eliminate the hidden-terminal and exposed-terminal problems. Deafness is an additional challenge to the directional antenna based solutions. This dissertation, first develops analytical models for quantifying the throughput and delay in wireless multihop ad hoc networks. The models consider the impact of hidden terminals using the realistic signal to interference and noise ratio model and consider random node distribution. The proposed analysis is applicable to many wireless MAC protocols and applications. The analytical results reveal several important issues. The first issue is quantifying the impact of adjusting the transmission range on the throughput and delay in wireless multihop ad hoc networks. The other issue is the hidden terminal region is closely related to the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. Thus, it is possible to adjust the transmission range to optimize the whole network performance. These results provide important guidelines for network planning and protocol optimization in wireless multihop ad hoc networks. Second, it proposes a new Enhanced Busy-tone Multiple Access (EBTMA) medium access control (MAC) protocol for minimizing the negative impact of both the hidden-terminal and the exposed-terminal problems. The new protocol can also enhance the reliability of packet broadcasts and multicasts which are important for many network control functions such as routing. Different from other busy-tone assisted MAC protocols, the protocol uses a non-interfering busy-tone signal in ashort period of time, in order to notify all hidden terminals without blocking a large number of nodes for a long time. In addition, the proposed EBTMA protocol can co-exist with the existing 802.11 MAC protocol, so it can be incrementally deployed. Third, it investigates how to support the directional antennas in ad hoc multihop networks for achieving higher spatial multiplexing gain and thus higher network throughput. A new MAC protocol called Dual Sensing Directional MAC (DSDMAC) protocol for wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas is proposed. The proposed protocol differs from the existing protocols by relying on a dual sensingstrategy to identify deafness, resolve the hidden-terminal problem and to avoid unnecessary blocking. Finally, this dissertation provides important results that help for network planning and protocol optimization in wireless multihop ad hoc networks in quantifying the impact of transmission range on the throughput and the delay. The accuracy of these results has been verified with extensive discrete event simulations.

Several factors contribute to this degradation including network topology, node distance, media access control protocol, application and the source and aggregate traffic characteristics. In this thesis we studied the impact of various factors that determine the performance of an end-to-end connection for various applications in multi-hop wireless networks. We have developed various simulation models to study the dynamics of the above mentioned factors for different media access control including IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11s and TDMA under different traffic source conditions, such as constant bit rate, file transfer protocol and general traffic. Our study shows that multi-hop networks have significant limitations for delay-sensitive traffic and significant limitation in quality of service provisioning.

Thus, analytical methods/approximation is necessary for real-time estimation, large-scale network optimization, and sensitivity analysis. In a circuit-switched loss network, a particular performance metric of interest is the end-to-end blocking probability. Various analytical approaches and approximation schemes have been suggested for this problem, and among them, the fixed-point method, or reduced load method, has received much attention. However, most of these schemes considered either only single traffic rate situations or multi-rate traffic under fixed routing. The authors have developed an approximation scheme to estimate end-to-end blocking probability in a multi-rate, multi-hop network with an adaptive routing scheme. The approximation results are compared with that of discrete event simulation. An example of application also is provided in which the proposed scheme is linked to the optimization tool CONSOL-OPTCAD to get network design trade-offs. The method described here is readily applicable to the accurate performance evaluation of military networks, which are often large and hybrid.

Book excerpt: Rapid growth in wireless networks has resulted in a growing need for fast and ubiquitous connectivity. Most networks deployed currently are single hop access point (AP) networks, where the end user is connected to an AP if it is within communication range of the AP. While such networks are popular and have been deployed extensively, the inherent low range of Wi-Fi networks limits their coverage. Again, high deployment costs of high speed wired networks do not allow single hop networks to provide ubiquitous and cheap connectivity. Recently, a highly viable solution to the above problem has appeared in the form of multihop infrastructure networks (MINs). A MIN is a network of wireless routers connected to an AP and provides multihop coverage in an area. These networks may present a highly viable and cheap alternative to the problem of universal coverage. While the concept of MINs is exciting, deployment of such networks cannot commence without a thorough inspection of the performance, handoffs mechanisms and security considerations involved. The aim of this thesis is to provide a complete architecture for MINs and explore the various aspects that affect the performance and security of such networks. We solve the problem in a number of phases. First, we provide an analytical framework using which the end-to-end delay and throughput characteristics of the network can be predicted. This framework can then be used to predict the scalability of such networks. The model can also be used for bottleneck determination in such networks and to provide effective routing techniques. The behavior of the delay characteristics of MINs have been effectively addressed by taking both bulk traffic and single arrival traffic into consideration. The queue modeling for forwarder nodes in MINs is complicated by the fact that traditional queuing mechanisms are no longer valid as the arrival and departure processes can never be simultaneous. We propose two different approaches to queuing analysis in MINs. Secondly, we propose to provide an architecture for handoffs in MINs. This involves defining a handoff for MINs, and outlining a method to perform handoffs depending on the parameters that need to be optimized. The suggested protocols should also aim towards minimizing the delays and message overheads involved in the handoff process. Protocols have also been proposed to reduce the delay and message overheads involved in handoffs by the use of pre-authentication mechanisms. Finally, we propose a security architecture for MINs. The first part of this security architecture addresses the problem of key distribution for group communication. The second part of the security architecture allows communication between the members of a MIN by the establishment of robust key agreement protocols for node-to-node pair wise communication. These protocols can be used for ad-hoc network communication as well.
