This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the ?rst edition of this book was published in 2002, there have been many advances in our knowledge of percutaneous vertoplasty (PV), particularly about how to perform the procedure more safely and how to approach more complex case situations. Additionally, mate- als that were initially used “off label” or that simply were not FDA approved have completed their governmental review and have received FDA approval. This has increased the legitimacy of the p- cedure from the legal and reimbursement perspective. Controversy over height restoration and device selection has become a progressively bigger issue over time. Kyphoplasty (balloon assisted vertebroplasty) has received tremendous emphasis. This book c- pares and contrasts data and claims that differentiate kyphoplasty from percutaneous vertebroplasty. We also look at other methods that pot- tially can be used for height restoration. New procedures that deal with bone augmentation in other anatomic regions have evolved (i.e., sacroplasty) and are discussed. As this re- lution in image-guided percutaneous bone augmentation has dev- oped, multiple medical specialties have embraced these procedures in their training programs for both residents and practicing physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely due to their capacity to provide immediate pain relief in osteoporotic compression fractures and neoplastic disease of the spine, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty have become popular techniques in recent years. These procedures require minimal incisions and can be performed without general anesthesia, which adds to their appeal. This is the first book to cover everything that is currently known about vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, including patient selection, operative techniques, complication avoidance, management, outcomes, and more! You will find extensive discussions of the role of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty in acute fractures, non-osteoporotic pathological compression fractures, and burst fractures. A multidisciplinary panel of spine surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and interventional radiologists provide their unique perspectives, along with comparisons of techniques and potential complications to help you select the right procedure for a particular patient. Filling a significant gap in literature, this exceptional work provides a ''snapshot'' of these modern surgical techniques, with practical guidelines on using them to provide optimal patient care. It is a state-of-the-art resource for all informed spine surgeons, radiologists, and neurosurgeons. *Message from AANS and Thieme: Participants using this book to apply for CME credit now have until January 31, 2010 to complete and pass the Home Study Examination (available online from the AANS - see CME Credit Information page for more information). Book excerpt: Endovascular intervention - using medication and devices introduced through catheters or microcatheters placed into the blood vessels through a percutaneous approach - has emerged as a relatively new minimally invasive approach to treat cerebrovascular disease and possibly intracranial neoplasms. This textbook provides a comprehensive review of principles pertinent to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and intracranial tumors, with a detailed description of techniques for these procedures and periprocedural management strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on expert interpretation of the quality of evidence provided and implications for practice related to endovascular procedures. This will be essential reading for clinicians working in interventional neurology and cardiology, endovascular neurosurgery, vascular surgery and neuroradiology.

Book excerpt: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are the most common type of fracture secondary to osteoporosis. These fractures are associated with significant rates of morbidity and mortality and annual direct medical expenditures of more than $1 billion in the United States. This book presents a concise review of the diagnosis, management and treatment of vertebral compression fractures, discussing best practices for evaluation and radiographic diagnosis of vertebral compression fractures, as well as both non-operative and operative treatment options, including cement augmentation. Opening chapters discuss both normal bone physiology as well as the pathophysiology of osteoporotic bone, and the evaluation and biomechanics of VCF, both osteoporotic and pathologic. Examination, radiography and long-term sequelae of VCF are then presented. The bulk of the remainder of the book focuses on medical, non-operative and operative management strategies, including vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty cement augmentation, management of spinal deformity, VCF adjacent to previous spinal fusion, and sacral insufficiency fractures. A final chapter on future treatment strategies rounds out the presentation. Spinal Compression Fractures in Osteoporotic and Pathologic Bone is ideal for orthopaedic trauma, spine, and neurosurgeons. The book is also intended for endocrinologists, rheumatologists, interventional radiologists, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, primary care physicians, and other practitioners who manage and treat patients with osteoporosis.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. The scientific evidence is insufficient to determine if percutaneous vertebroplasty or balloon kyphoplasty yield better outcomes than nonsurgical strategies or placebo in treating symptomatic vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis.2. Cement leakage is common with both methods. Although it usually causes no symptoms, the clinical significance of such leakage is not fully investigated.3. The scientific evidence is insufficient to determine the cost-effectiveness of percutaneous vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty.4. Randomised and blinded trials should be conducted, but such trials are associated with substantial methodological problems. Long-term evaluation of the methods' effects and risks would require systematic follow-up, e.g. via a national quality registry.
