Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the current perceptions of high school principals regarding their perceived roles, professional development experiences that impacted their careers, and the challenges and frustrations they face when enacting their roles as high school leaders. This qualitative study investigated perceptions of high school principals and addressed three research questions: (1) What are the perceptions of high school principals regarding their role as school leaders? (2) What professional development experiences do high school principals report are most important in impacting their careers? (3) What do high school principals perceive are their greatest challenges and frustrations? Three in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with each of eight high school principals. The results were based on analysis by the researcher and the two expert panels. The high school principals perceived that they had a tremendous number of roles and responsibilities within their positions. The roles and responsibilities that were identified with the greatest importance were: providing a safe learning environment, ensuring quality teachers and quality instruction, high accountability expectations for all and mandates, and leadership within the school and system. Professional development opportunities and personalized support systems were perceived to be vital to the success of the high school principal. Principals in the study reported that both formal and informal professional development experiences were beneficial for their improvement as school leaders. The principals perceived that when they created relationships with mentors and established strong networks, they improved the likelihood of sustained support and success. High school principals perceived the greatest challenges were management of time, balancing leadership and management of the school, and navigating the legislative mandates and accountability requirements. High school principals perceived the greatest frustrations were issues related to time and legislative mandates dictated to them by the local, state, and federal systems. They faced constant pressures that could be directly tied to student achievement and accountability measures. High school principals need to be prepared to assume various roles. Further research may determine if roles and challenges identified by the eight participants mirror other states' results.

The purpose of this study was to explore current perceptions of high school principals regarding their perceived roles, the challenges they face, and their recommendations for professional development for those who aspire to be high school principals. This study was developed as one of qualitative design, exploratory in nature. Qualitative research was used in order to gain a more holistic impression of the perceptions of high school principals of their roles and challenges. The study addresses these questions: 1.What are the perceptions of high school principals regarding their roles as the school principal, and how do these perceptions align with what they actually do daily? 2.What do high school principals perceive are their greatest challenges? 3.What do current high school principals recommend as professional development activities or developmental experiences for aspiring high school principals? For this study, 13 high school principals from a mid-sized school district in Texas participated in an in-depth interview process. Those interviews were transcribed and responses were organized and aligned to the research questions. An analysis was then conducted to determine themes emerging from the interviews with high school principals. Results of the analysis were summarized and conclusions drawn. The study concludes with implications for practice and recommendations for further study.

The purpose of this study is to explore the shared perceptions that secondary assistant principals hold toward their development as instructional leaders given the support from their principals' leadership actions and transformational practices. Thirty-four secondary middle and high school assistant principals' perspectives were explored using Q methodology. Participants performed a Q sort of thirty-eight statements to examine their subjective viewpoints toward their own development as instructional leaders. Four perspectives emerged from the study, Relational & Support, Coaching & Collective Collaboration, Data-Driven & Feedback, and Professional Development & Strategic Planning. Each perspective leads to a deeper understanding aligned with the development of the assistant principal as instructional leader.

Phase I of this mixed method study uses an online survey of 112 elementary school principals to better understand their descriptions of an effective instructional leader and the professional development supports they need. Phase II consists of personal interviews of 12 elementary school principals. The research revealed four overarching themes: Personal Attributes, Values Relationships, Leadership Skill Sets, and Meaningful Professional Development. Principals described effective leaders as visionaries, hospitable, empowering others, visible, good listeners, collaborators, ethical, and ones who improve instruction, manage people, data, and foster school improvement. The research data showed that adult learners learn through problem solving, mentoring, and in one-on-one coaching situations. They expressed a need for professional development that was applicable, used real-life situations, and was designed to improve their understanding of new concepts and ideas. Specifically, principals requested professional development on topics including progress monitoring, intervention strategies, improving achievement among at-risk students, time management, teacher evaluation systems, and new curricula. Principals requested more support from human resources, specifically, the hiring of additional assistant principals who could assist with managerial tasks related to discipline, evaluations for classified staff, bus duty, and special education compliance issues, thus allowing more time for principals to embrace their roles as instructional leaders and to internalize the impact of their efforts on student achievement. Participating principals suggested district administrators arrange more frequent opportunities for principals to visit other schools and to meet with principals in their districts to gain a unified understanding of new information. They suggested that district administrators provide professional development in more comfortable locations and in small group settings that incorporate time to evaluate the impact of different strategies on students' academic performance. Finally, they desired professional development facilitated by high profile keynote speakers who are deemed as experts in their fields, as well as professional development that focuses on administrators' skills sets, progress monitoring, and migrant students.

Book excerpt: With the shift in the focus of education to preparing all students to be college and career ready, there is little research that explores how teachers in small, rural schools are preparing students through project-based learning (PBL) for college and careers. Research suggests that rural adolescents contend with greater challenges in college and career development and preparedness as they move into "post-high school transitions" and that rural adolescents may have lower career aspirations and greater expectations for entering the workforce immediately after high school than adolescents who live in other settings. The purpose of this research study was to explore how teachers in small, rural schools are preparing students through PBL for college and careers. This study sought to understand small, rural high school district teachers' experiences with implementing curricula that integrates college and career readiness (CCR) with PBL. Further, teachers described how they view their role in preparing students for 21st-century college and careers and the challenges they experienced in a small, rural high school district. Data were gathered through a series of in-depth interviews, observations, and artifact review and analyzed for emergent codes, themes and trends. The study's conclusions indicated the role of education and professional development in participants' understanding (or lack thereof) of PBL and CCR along with relevancy is a primary catalyst for participants to integrate PBL and CCR. PBL provides relevance, thus increasing student engagement through an understanding of the purpose for what students are being asked to do. In addition, the value of PBL in preparing students for CCR include CTE and core integration, technology, Habits of Mind, challenges of rural schools, and success in life. Participant perceptions revealed that administrative expectations were unattainable because administration expects teachers to learn, implement, and have students successful with PBL and CCR overnight, resulting in teacher frustration. A lack of support after training and through the implementation process results in participants' frustration and the PBL concept being dropped by teachers. Lastly, teacher participants faced rural school challenges with respect to community resources available to support PBL and CCR in the classroom. Major recommendations from the study include supporting teachers with initial and continuous professional development for PBL, CCR, and grading strategies; develop district-wide best practices in supporting interdisciplinary PBL and CCR; and provide ongoing, regularly scheduled planning time and PBL experts within the contract day. Further, provide teachers with ongoing current community business and industry databases or websites to access guest speakers, mentors, paid/unpaid internships and externships and job shadow experiences as well as district-wide short- and long-term action plans that outline how administration is going to provide ongoing PBL and CCR support for teachers.

Chief among these responsibilities is assuring that students are learning the curriculum, and achieving their academic potential. The challenge, then, is to identify how principals impact student learning, and then help them to develop these leadership behaviors effectively. While many educational researchers have sought to find the leadership behaviors and factors that describe how principals can most significantly impact student achievement, the principals themselves have been largely left out of the conversation. High school principals' experiences and efforts to maintain safe schools, connect communities, foster citizenship, and prepare students for colleges and careers, while trying to promote students' achievement on standardized test scores during the accountability era, offers a perspective and a contribution to research that is invaluable. This study used a qualitative design in order to understand the participants' meanings, through inductive analysis of data, after interviewing a cross-section of seven male high school principals about their perspectives and experiences. The participants served in academically high-achieving, medium-achieving schools and low-achieving schools with student populations of various sizes, settings, and population demographics. The schools were all located in the suburban area of Philadelphia. The participants had all been in their buildings as principal for at least two years, and had served in the role of high school principal for at least three years. There were three common themes that emerged from this study. First, principal leadership in schools impacts student success, although it is difficult to measure, and complex to explain. Principals must hire the best teachers, foster a positive climate and culture, and form positive professional relationships with teachers. Secondly, Principals must be perceptive to and understand the needs of their school and community. Students must perceive that they are safe, and communities must perceive that they trust schools. Finally, teachers must perceive that they are valued much more than any externally imposed measure of success may define them. As a result of the findings, it is recommended that principals seeking to maximize student success take the time to assess the needs of their schools, collaborate to make decisions, realize that promoting a positive climate and culture has to be a priority of their role, and devote sufficient time and resources to hiring and developing quality teachers.
